Kentucky I-75 shooting: Suspect legally bought AR-15 on day of attack | LiveNOW from FOX

A manhunt remains in effect in Kentucky for a man suspected in the weekend shooting of nine vehicles and wounding of five people on a busy interstate.
Joseph A. Couch, 32, was named a suspect in Saturday’s shootings on I-75 after authorities recovered his SUV on a service road near the crime scene. Authorities later found a semi-automatic weapon nearby that they believe was used in the shooting, said Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, a spokesperson for the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office. He added that dozens of local, state and federal law enforcement officers are involved in the search. Meantime, Laurel County Sheriff John Root said Sunday night that the AR-15 rifle used in the shootings was purchased legally on the day of the attack.
The search was focused on a remote area north of London, a community of about 8,000 people, roughly 75 miles (120 kilometers) south of Lexington. Laurel County, Kentucky schools are closed Monday out of an abundance of caution.

The fact that it's an AR-15 assault-type weapon tells us a lot about the shooter and the capability of the weaon: High-powered, accurate, long-range, rapid-firing, high-capacity--designed specifically for killing human beings. I used to work search and rescue in this area. It's extremely hard to find people. Tourists would often come from out of state to camp, hunt or ride ATVs. Even knowing the area well, it would take me hours and hours to get to them. And that's with knowing exactly where they are at. Years ago, a family got lost camping and it took me about 2 to 3 hours to get to them even though I knew exactly where they were at. And that was in the dark. If you've never been in the Appalachian mountains, there is no cell service. The hills are too dense to get radio contact. This is not the suburbs.

Ask yourself something. Don't this look like the police are blaming someone who may not have done this at all. Because they're pretty sure he has unalived himself or will soon. He left his rifle behind which usually means they've given up. So it's unlikely his plan is to travel very far. They're just worried he may wander into an inhabited area before he has made up his mind and thus be a danger to more people nearby.

I grew up in those mountains. They are extremely rough. Feels, valleys, old caves you name it. It's probably some of the roughest terrain in the United States. It's right on the heart of the Appalachian mountains. I was also in the military. FLIR doesn't work like it does in the movies. If he were to hide in one of those caves or dunk down in a body of water, they would never see him. He would be able to hear the helicopter coming for miles.

Military are taught how to evade infrared and thermal. Thermal is easy in a heavily wooded area, and FLIR is defeated with a $2 emergency blanket. One of those and a woobie/pancho makes a shelter you won't find from the air.

Take them to the place where the shots were fired from, and get out of the way. This comes from a man in Ms who hates green fields, shoot houses, climber stands. 48 hours isn't much time at all. A few years ago a guy did this to a police barracks in PA. Almost a thousand police and federal agents were hunting him for 7 weeks in the woods. It's not easy to find someone in the woods when they *_want_* to be found, like a lost hiker, let alone when they don't want to be found and probably prepared.

In some places long guns have less restrictions than handguns. But you still have to do paperwork to buy them. The questions for handguns is more extensive and is run through a data base. I am disabled and a below the knee amputee! I can’t run so my handgun is very important

But paperwork, minimal waiting periods, and background checks that are truly and thoroughly vetted, as many current laws state, are fine by me. That said, as long as they aren't designed as a thread to continually be pulled. Not specific to this case, it's a shame that people that should raise a flag still go unscrutinized. That doesn't mean we need more laws, it means enforcement needs to be held to the same standards citizens are demanded of.
