Kenwood TH-D74 - This is a 40 minutes interview with Don W6GPS, showing the radio and answering questions.
This is the new D-Star radio from Kenwood, not available yet.
This video was capture from the PC, there's a little bit of echo, sorry about that.

I need HELP!!! I can't figure out how to get back in "Memory Mode" where I can select from the repeaters I have stored in memory. I think it is stuck in some sort of APRS memory mode or something. How do I get back to Memory Mode???

Update : HRO replaced mine .it actually work correctly . I updated my previous unit to 1.09 but this one I may wait to do that .

Is there a way to clone stored freqs from a D72 to the D74? Or does someone know how to copy the file from the kenwood software MCP to the D74 file so one wouldn't have to enter 400 frequencies again?

Hi, I can't say but if you use RT System, yes as soon as the lauch the version for the TH-D74. 73

Don I am having a hard time changing my MHz Step settings. the default is 25....the user manual does not make it clear how to lower the step size so that I can manually enter a frequency in vfo ....my thf6 was easy to do.....this one is confusing. I am new to this . K6BNE

(1) If the display screen is plastic - it will scratch easily. Does anyone know? (2) Is it full-duplex (see Clayton's question below)? (3) Has anyone had problems with this unit? Thx, K7NXT

1) yes the screen is plastic and will scratch easily but screen protectors are available and recommended 2) Nope it isn't 3) Not had any issues personally but a friend damaged the centre pin for the antenna. It's being sent back for repair.

I think that this handheld radio has a lot of killer functions like the bluetooth thing. At the end of the video Don mentioned if there is no DSTAR repeater around you can use a DVAP or something similar. In this point the (also brandnew) ID-51 PLUS 2 will have the possibility to use itself as a Hotspot (just in case you own a second DSTAR radio) or you can talk directly into the internet using your handheld connected through a USB-cable with your PC or Android device.

Hi Stephan, my understanding of the new ID-51 Plus 2 is that you will need a second D-Star radio to use it as a Hotspot. Something to consider or confirm before you buy any radio. 73

I am considering getting this radio but sometimes stay in an area where I can't hit a Dstar repeater. I know the Id51a plus supposedly direct connects online but want to be sure this one does as well.Thank you kindly

I'm hearing rumors that this radio is not full duplex. This will not be good for followers of previous generation TH-D7 or TH-D72 radios who are expecting the TH-D74 to be their satellite radio. If Kenwood removed the full-duplex capability in this new model, they did a disservice to the amateur radio satellite community. I wish this could be solidly confirmed but the manual appears to indicate this feature has been removed.

Laboenligne.ca well , I took it back to HRO and after an hour of arguing my case and avert ing my accolades they agreed to the replacement . This one has menus the other was missing btw. I am not sure I want to update the firmware from 1.08 to 1.09 .
