A film by Bruno Sorrentino
From the moment he was born, Erodo, a Kenyan boy born to a tribe of cattle nomads in 1992, has had his life documented by filmmaker Bruno Sorrentino.
Over the last 20 years his life has been shaped by ethnic violence and by the tension between his father's desire to continue the old traditions of herding and his mother's belief that settled society and education are the future.
At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the voiceless.'
Reaching more than 270 million households in over 140 countries across the globe, our viewers trust Al Jazeera English to keep them informed, inspired, and entertained.
Our impartial, fact-based reporting wins worldwide praise and respect. It is our unique brand of journalism that the world has come to rely on.
We are reshaping global media and constantly working to strengthen our reputation as one of the world's most respected news and current affairs channels.

I so love this documentary. And I love Erdo. First part of the film was tough watching Erdo. And my heart broke that moment when he was hiding milking the goat for a drop of milk direct into his mouth. Every two years, he increasingly becoming to look like a man, a handsome man. On to the next story, I was anxious to see how he looks like after nine years. And, like you maybe, I was so amazed with his physique and how he grew up to be a fine man, despite the hardships. I wish I could meet him one day. And I wish AJ would continue filming his progress. Thank you, Al Jazzera! Nice job.

Esther is such a strong woman, her love for her children is admirable. Her willingness to go to the unknown to keep her family safe and alive. Her independence, hard work. I felt sad that she couldn't decide when to have children. I hope Erodo is doing well. I hope Esther's latter years are more stable and happier. Brought tears to my eyes.

Erdo was blessed to have an iron woman as MOTHER. Her transformative energy is quite unmatched even when she is not educated.

Darn good story ,it follows a little infant born into a nomadic herding way of life right up to the kid as a young man going off to apprentice training , his patents have high hopes of him continuing his education, forget the paligamy and they flies; its a good story of parents dreams beyond they're situation.

The mother is so so so Amazing. She has a strength honestly I've never ever seen before. Her son has become a sweet loving honest hard working man. Just out of curiosity i wonder if he had ever thought about modeling his features are perfect. He's gorgeous. Wow to bad that kind of thing isn't offered like it is here in California Cause he would really go far.. Well good luck to this family hopefully they achieve all of their goals. I'm sure with a strong beautiful mother like they have they will be successful.. She truly sets the bar incredibly high..just truly amazing..

The Journalist has moral authority to change the life of this Young man for better by a virtue of being in his life not just filming him alone. He could have asked some organization to help him or more importantly look for a visa for him to get better opportunity elsewhere.

Thank you Al Jazeera for this.. I have lived in Mombasa all my life but whenever I go to Turkana, I feel disturbed to see and hear stories of the two tribes fighting over water , cattle and land. Although this might be a very random story to someone I can completely relate and at least you have spread the awareness. God bless you.

I never wanted someone I don't know to succeed so badly. I feel like the producers of this documentary could and should help with his school, they made money from this doc after all.

Really great story. He and his family have been through a lot. I admire his mom believing in sending him to school. I hope he is successful in what he does. I agree with him "Corruption kills hope" so many people wonder what's the point of doing things if corruption rules.

Esther is the real star of the show, not Erodo! It was Esther who brought the family through with hard graft day after day and her sheer determination to survive everything thrown at her and her children, including the constant threat of death. Esther is absolutely bomb proof as a mother. She is the strength and inspiration of every mother that ever was, or will be and there is a mother just like Esther also fighting for life and her children in every village in every country in Africa. Esther's beautiful singing voice made me feel warm inside but at the same time, sad for her. @ 12:22 @ 13:29 @ 16:41 @ 25:37 @ 47:00

Amazing how even people in poverty fight with each other... how even different groups of poor people are divided and cause strife. I would think that they would all be able to look at their collective situation and cease violence and share more.

What a story of adversity triumph determination hard work versatility! What a lovely mother! Hope she lives long to see her children thrive. I truly wish her son Erodo ( medicinal plant) prosperity. May he become the medicine / healing for himself n community. It's a shame that elected leaders of other tribes see no value in others (tribes) thanks for showing.

Turkan is a beautiful , rich with natural resources. Turkana people have been way too long neglected by the government. Esther, beautiful woman and very intelligent. A true fighter and demonstrates deep love for her kids. Esther have a drive of steel Erodo I salute you 👏🏽, very sharp and determined young man. Teachers should stop hitting children. Erodo needed all support he could have. His young life was traumatic....and he was traumatised by the killing sprees. Erodo if you're reading this let me know how to reach you or your mum.

Interesting vid; however and unfortunately, not too many people will watch it all the way through as most people with access to KZbin will find so many scenes of many flies on faces quite repulsive. I know that flies on the face are tolerated in the subject's culture, but this video could've delivered the same message about that culture outside of that culture if such scenes were kept to a minimum. As is, this videographer seems to scream "HEY, LOOK AT ALL THE FLIES ON FACES! AUTHENTIC, HUH?"
@LifeinAmerica2022
@LifeinAmerica2022 7 жыл бұрын
I was bothered by the fly, too. I can't let a fly enter my house let alone land on my face. But I understand the message of the film. If you have noticed, from the start of the film, there were so many flies. As the film progresses, there was less and less flies landing on their faces. I think that the more flies, the poorer is. This goes the same in my culture in the Philippines, too. More flies are seen in poorer areas.

good story, amazing people. but they really need to stop having so many kids. I'm sure a very high percentage die because they do not have food, health or water security. most can barley take care of themselves as adults. it is exasperating the hunger problem in the country. strong woman though, Christopher useless it seems.
