Critics of the bill pointed to the lavish lifestyles of Ruto and his administration, calling on officials to limit their expenses as ordinary Kenyans face rising costs. Many young Kenyans who had supported Ruto's election now feel betrayed, as he has pushed forward with reforms that have caused more economic pain rather than relief. At least 23 people were killed and over 300 injured in the protests, which saw thousands storm parliament in defiance of the bill. Ruto initially took a hardline stance, calling the protests "treasonous," but was ultimately forced to back down and withdraw the legislation.

World Bank and IMF being at the center of this punitive bill and deplorable economic situation adds pain to injury. World Bank has been issuing loans to Kenya and knowingly seen these loans get stolen by government officials. The former president presided over the award of millions to Kenyans with full knowledge of the corruption and mismanagement of funds by the task force assigned to run the program. They allowed misappropriation of US 15 billion and laughed it off as if it was nothing. I raised my concerns back then and I was victimized by the taskforce. Today, World Bank, Government of Kenya is reaping from that seed they sowed. Much more on the way
