#HappyBirthdayToYou, also known as #HappyBirthday, is a song traditionally sung to celebrate the anniversary of a person's birth. According to the 1998 #GuinnessWorldRecords, it is the most recognized song in the English language, followed by #ForHesaJollyGoodFellow. The song's base lyrics have been translated into at least 18 languages.[1] The melody of "Happy Birthday to You" comes from the song "Good Morning to All",[2] which has traditionally been attributed to American sisters Patty and Mildred J. Hill in 1893,[3][4] although the claim that the sisters composed the tune is disputed see more at en.wikipedia.o...

Yes I can see why that would be confusing! Unfortunately I haven't made many tutorials for 16 hole tremolos, but here's all the lessons I've made so far if you're still interested :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnrVkpypr7lmZpY

Anyone who has heard restaurant staff sing, "Happy Birthday" to a diner has noticed the tune they use is not the well known Happy Birthday tune. I have heard this is because the standard tune is not Public Domain, Can anyone confirm or refute this?
@KerinGedge
@KerinGedge 2 жыл бұрын
What you are saying used to be true. The company Warner Chappell claimed to own the rights to Happy Birthday and took about 2mil in annual royalties from various artists for many years. But I think in 2015, in response to a copyright claim a judge ruled that Warner did not in fact own the song and they were ordered to pay a lot of people back. I think it was something like 14 Million in penalties. So to answer your question the song is now DEFINITELY in the public domain. www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/music/music-company-does-not-own-happy-birthday-song-copyright-judge-n432001

@@KerinGedge Thanks, this was interesting. It is quite strange that there is such litigation over what is a rather risible song that is so engrained in our, US, culture.

Mate, I'm in New Zealand and it's probably one of the most well known tunes on this side of the world as well... Philosophically speaking I've never understood copyright laws. On one hand I get that musicians have to make a living somehow but as a music loving person myself I don't believe that musicians actually "create" thier tunes, rather I think musicians "discover" thier tunes out of an infinite number of possibilities. No one invented electricity for example... I can't help but feel that claiming a melody as yours and yours only is pure arrogance :p But that's just me.

@@KerinGedge I'd say copy right protection is generally a good thing. If a musician has written a produced a tune he reasonably wishes to retain production and distribution rights so other musicians cannot swipe the tune and profit by it, just as I suspect ypu'd be displeased were a coworker profit from your efforts and what ever job you work in. Discovering a tune for infinite possibilities? Hummm, too Platonic. I have purchased several very nice penny whistles from a maker in NZ. He mostly names them after various NZ birds. Now I'm concerned if they, the birds, are getting any bird seed from him.
@KerinGedge
@KerinGedge 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't heard of that penny whistle seller, have you got a link to where I can find him? Regarding infinite possibilities let me explain it this way. I "made up" a tune once, I still hum it from time to time... it's an Irish ballad of sorts. In actuality it was the tones of my high school girlfriends phone number, which I hummed and it grew into a tune that I like to think of as my own, but in truth it was just a random series of numbers that had been assigned a random set of tones. Who wrote that song? Random chance. Who discovered it? Me. but you're quite right with your analogy, artists deserve to make a living... however I would argue that greedy corporations, not so much! :p
