It is aircraft as in one aircraft or 10 aircraft, so the plural of aircraft is aircraft. See this so often on the internet. Like dog for one and dogs for more dogs does not apply to aircraft. So, one would say see all the aircraft on the airport, not aircrafts. Just a short English lesson.

Hopefully those are reproductions. The originals were, I think, magnesium which would not be safe after 80 years.

@@aolinger680 Magnesium becomes brittle and cracks as it ages. This is true of any magnesium components after 40 to 50 years, including magnesium wheels on old race cars and these old warplanes. The Germans especially liked using structural magnesium components on their aircraft. Of course the warplanes of that Era were never intended to last very long, and didn't. And this is a major reason most planes of that Era are display only, not flight worthy. But at the current value of these old machines, reproduction components can be fabricated. Most of the restored flying WWII planes are more replica than original anyway.

Dear Kermit Weeks Channel Team, thank you for showcasing the ins and outs of the powerplant and fuselage of a former Bf 109 pursuit plane. In particular, cantilever and suspension have caught my interest. I would have liked to learn how those engineers calculated dimensions without computers to provide the necessary material strength. As a side note, I would like to add that, as a born German, I am thankful to see the engineering accomplishments of my compatriots, who have lived and worked in this context of historic times, are brought to life once again. I once saw a Merlin equipped 109 fly here in germany, even though one of the more compact fighters of WW II it’s still a BIG plane… it flew with a Russian acrobatic plane it it was just huge !!

So this process is much like doing control arms and shocks on a car. Involves jacks here and there, punsh and shove here and there to get it all to line up enough to get a bolt in, tapping and banging away with a mallet..... hehe love it, guys, this gave me goosebumps! What a treat. This is truly special !

When I was a kid building models, I just couldnt comprehend how those motor mounts bolted to the fuselage could hold up and support the DB. Let alone with the G forces of aerial combat. Later on when I was growing up I learned a little engineering. Then I looked at it like could the DB hold up and handle the weight of the 109. I thought thats no problem at all. After that I happened to gaze over at my 3 ton pickup made mostly of steel. And it was all bolted to aluminum rims.

Yep, me too...thinking about the weight, power, vibrations of that engine..in the air, the engine does indeed hold up and handle the weight of the 109...on the ground, the 109(and it's flimsy looking landing gear) hold up the weight of the DB...so it works both ways...

As I was watching this its kind of saddens me thinking that once these guys that pass on a lot of the knowledge we are watching will be gone. Where is the younger guy running around the shop doing anything he can to be a part of this build and learning every thing he or she can. Hands on Passed down knowledge is better than anything a fancy collage can teach you. Any way what a great project bringing back such a historic machine, so the lessons learned from its history can live on and not be forgotten by time.

I fully understand, I'm a bit of a odd ball I have a 4 year computer science degree and I worked in the trades for 25 years. I hated every minute of working in a office, the politics, BS ,and all drove me away from IT work. If I was younger and starting my path again would have been a in the Aviation mechanic/electronics. I'm a Gen Xer we grew up learning from the old masters while setting the path for the modern electronic age. The fact of the matter is that every trade from Aviation mechanic to Plumbing is full of old guys that keep the world running and little no younger guys to replace us, and the best place for a young person to start is sweeping the shop floors, until one of us older guys get annoyed and yells at you to stop watching and get dirty.@@christianjensen5523

I’m lucky to live near Biggin Hill airfield near London, and regularly hear and see restored spitfires flying, and the occasional Lancaster bomber. Seeing one of these fly over my head would be quite something

One goal of Willy Messerschmitt‘s design team in the early / mid 1930‘s was to fit the smallest possible airframe to the largest possible engine. It shows. As Mr. Weeks observed when sitting in the 109: compared to a Mustang she is small, if not tiny. Even the Spitfire is larger (and the T-6 / Harvard as well). A G-6 weighs (MTOW) 3150 Kg, DB 605 A has 1475 hp. That‘s 2.1 Kg/hp. (4.6 lbs / 1 hp). Quite impressive I would say. (P-51 D for comparison: 5260 Kg, 1649 hp, 3.1 Kg / hp (7 lbs / 1 hp). Though the early versions of the Bf 109 were much lighter, the engines were less powerful as well (Jumo 210 D: 680 hp, Bf 109 B1 MTOW 1955 Kg, (4310 lbs), 2.8 Kg/ hp, 6.3 lbs / hp).

I remember many years ago a much younger KERMIT flying into San Diego California in a very beautiful p 51, it was at Brown Field a few miles from the Mexico border...he did a fly by and my friend kept yelling "roll it man, roll it !!! ]" as if Mr. Weeks could hear him...after a few minutes my friend and I went to see the mustang and a few pilots had gotten around to talk the talk and my friend asked Kermit "why didn't you roll it man its easy right ?....to which KERMIT said "are you crazy and loose my license p"???...will never forget that was so long ago and look at Mr. Weeks now !!!!

What a fantastic start to the resurrection of that airplane. Willy Messerschmitt would be very proud of your attention given to his design. The detail in the design of the aircraft systems is very well displayed here. The forging for the landing gear pivot and the integration into the engine mount and fuselage structure made for a very strong landing gear mount. This allowed the wings to be very lightly constructed and to fasten to the fuselage at three locations, 2 on the carry through spar, and one location at the front of the wing. The engineering of this aircraft is so beautiful, I could study it all day. You guys are so lucky to be able to work on such a beautiful airplane.

Love the video and the project Somebody will eventually be having carpal tunnel surgery. Using a hand screwdriver to remove access panels is the path to carpal tunnel. Break the screws loose by hand but switch to a cordless drill or pneumatic screw gun to finish removing the screws. When installing the screws start by hand then use the screw gun to run them in and stop just short of tight. Use screwdriver and / or Torque screwdriver to complete installation. Save your hands and wrists. I really appreciate what Kermit has done for aviation.

I'm 70 years old I worked on cars, motorcycles, boats, high performance stuff all my life and that guy with the hammer, hammered on those bolts in this episode more than I ever used a hammer doing mechanical work in my whole life.I know it was a brass hammer but that's i just not right.> not even a scrap of wood over the bolt.

That's the honest truth about that dropped nut. After my time working on A/C I can guarantee if you drop a fastener inside a compartment it will manage to bounce out to somewhere in never never land.
