Waldo Pepper Standard J-1 - Restoration Update #05 - December 2020

Here’s the final 2020 FoF Mechanic's Corner update on the Standard J-1 restoration. It’s been a year we all probably want to forget, but some progress was made through the diversions and close downs. Ken gives a final year end wrap on on what’s been accomplished, and he looks forward to what we all hope will be a better 2021. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!

Just want to let you know that we are onto you. You are not an airplane mechanic/ restorer. You PRETEND to be one so you can indulge in your clamp hoarding! There’s hope, join a clamp hoarding support group. They will help you hold it together. Some of the meetings can be riveting. Groups like them are the glue that binds our society into one piece.

You probably know this already, but Fred Austin at Golden Age Aeroplanes in Sparks, NV has a 1918 Standard J-1 for sale NEW IN A CRATE. There is no engine, but he claims the aircraft is otherwise complete.

The "Great Waldo Pepper" has been one of my favorite movies since I was a child. It will be amazing to see this plane fly again. I see that other than many of the metal fittings, very little of the fuselage is original. How much of the fuselage was original when the J-1 was used in the movie? Looking forward to the next update.

I was 8 when my grandfather took me to see the theatrical release. I love that film, great memories. Got to say it's a part of me, so I'll take this video as a holiday present.

Movie aircraft color depends a lot on the film stock.

We are not restoring this a/c to the Waldo Pepper paint scheme . It is being painted in Loening yellow and barnstormer signage. KK

I am curious about your wooden jig... with the daily humidity in your area, how do you address swelling/warpage in your wooden jig? How do you keep it aligned and symmetrical? Amazing wood work/craftsmanship! Y’all stay safe and have a wonderful holiday....
