While up in Vancouver in July 2016, to do some flying in the Martin "Hawaiian Mars," I was able to do a Kermie Cam walk through on the Martin "Philippine Mars" that was also based there. It's an amazing aircraft that I'm sure you'll enjoy seeing up close.This is Part 3 of the 3 part series. Enjoy!

5 years since last comment, but I wanted to thank you for the wonderful, detailed tour. I live close by, and have just witnessed the Hawaiian Mars flyby to her new home in Sydney (BC). Aviation history at its best. Incredible aircraft.

I grew up just down the road from the Mars bomber base and grew up watching these planes taxi past my house and then fly back over. A family friend of ours was a mechanic and flight engineer on the Philippine Mars and used to give us tours of the base and would boat us out to the bomber. I remember going up on the wings and walking back and forth making the floats touch down into the lake. At the time they also had a yellow grumman goose as a spotter plane which was a staple sight in the skies around Sproat Lake as well. If you saw the Goose going out you knew the bombers would likely soon follow. Later in my early twenties I got the opportunity to actually fly on the updated Hawaii Mars during a test flight. We did atleast two dumps, one we picked up from Sproat and the other we picked up out in the inlet. What a freaking surreal experience. I still cant believe I actually got to do that. From doing endless drawings, to my giant lego Hawaii Mars model I entered in the Fall Fair, to watching them as a kid first hand from the side of the Tofino highway as they tag-team a forest fire for hours on end without stopping... These planes have a special place in my heart. I dont care what any government official says... the 50+ year track record of completely smashing forest fires speaks louder than any naysayers. To have a plane that size able to continuously loop around and dump over and over... AND do it for an entire day without breaking a sweat.... AND to have TWO of them doing it? There just is nothing that even compares to that.

You did a great job!!!!! Better than my limited tour in 1954 at their mooring at Kehee lagoon across from John rogers field in honolulu --- 15 hours from alameda to honolulu.-- Our R 7vs (super connies) could do the trip in about 8hrs --- THANKS for the memory! --

Kermit, I truly enjoy all your videos. This one was particularly interesting because I have never been inside an anfib before. I was a pilot for the U.S. Border Patrol for 25 years. I have flown everything that the Border Patrol has ever had from Super Cubs to Convair 440s and helos from a Hughes 300 to specially modified Hughies. I retired in Dec. 1995 with over 14,000 hrs as PIC. I envy you being able to fly all those military aircraft. I know you suffered crawling around in the heat and through all the barriers and braces to make this video but I appreciate the pain you went through. Keep up the good work and thanks a million.

You call an ampibian an "anfib"? Why not amphib? Or just use the proper name. Not that hard to add those two extra syllables.
@elanthys

It's not an amphibian, note, since it can't land on or take off from land. It's a pure flying boat. Did you ever get to fly the Albatross?

At the end of this video you asked if this was cool... Way beyond cool. More than 12 years ago, during a business trip I had in Vancouver, I had an opportunity to visit/tour the Coulson facility on Sproat lake. We were given the privilege of accessing the Hawaii Mars water bomber. We were impressed with the sheer size of these planes. Your videos brought back great memories of an event that was the highlight of our trip. Thank you for sharing....

Have to admit, this is The Best airplane tour I have ever seen on the web and much Respect to a Boss who is 'hands on'....I have had the good fortune to work for a couple in my working life! Am lucky to have seen the Sunderland in the RAF Museum at Hendon, you can only look inside via a platform up to the hatch under the wing where the depth charges slid out of the fuselage, so that's how I came to your site! I have a soft spot for the Sunderland as I remember my Father let me help him put together the Airfix kit...And that was sixty years ago now. Continue your Happy Days!

Wow Kermit - thank you so much! That A/C is just super clean, and I was feeling it when you were crawling around in the wing root - Back in the day, I had a High school job with an old air freight company that flew C-46's - I crawled around in some terrible places and spent time not able to see what I was doing, standing on my head - small hands - I could get into really cramped spaces - - and it stunk to high heaven in the summer! - I got all the nasty jobs (avionics) - but it really was fun in a warped way

Seeing Kermit all sweaty reminds me that being on any warbird they can quickly become stifling sweat boxes. I crew on the B25 Panchito and it is tight, hot , and noisy . I promise I've been sick as shit but we carry on. They were war machines with very little in creature comforts if any. The Mars is an incredible piece of machinery, thanks for the tour Kermit👍

Please do one on the PBY. I know it's not an obscure plane, but I've never been able to find a good, thorough tour of the interior showing all the interesting bits. Most people just carry a camera into a plane and glance the camera around a few times, usually shaking and never holding it steady at all, and assume that now you've seen everything that they have. An ideal tour of a plane that lets people watching at home goes slowly, and lets the camera rest on everything for long enough to see it. It tries to be steady and systematic, and shows points of interest. Your videos are pretty good (although there are still occasions when I wish you would move the camera more slowly so the details can be made out).

So great to see all these parts of the plane, in fact it looks like more a ship inside! The pilots panel is quite simple compared to the other. By the way, I remarked that all panel wiring are white, I also seen that on a motorized glider Grob Twin, I never understood why every wire was white (on the Grob, tiny marking are on the wire, but it is hard to read). Again, thanks for sharing, especially for the wing part, as it seemed more a sauna than anything else.

Your right, totally cool, great walk through. What an engineering marvel even for the forties, the overall design and construction boggles ones mind. Fuel, you bet, in other words just starting this Mariner would use up the entire wing load of let's say, a Cessna 172 or even priming it. I got the politics angle, it is 70 plus years old and a grand old one at that and you can see great pains in maintaining this aircraft, not easy and expensive I'm sure. Kermit thanks for the nook and cranny view, sure enjoyed it. Not for the faint of heart clostrophobic...
