I’ve watched the movie and seen loads of reviews for it, and I think people’s opinions mainly boil down to one thing… If you’re a general fan of the whole franchise, you’ll enjoy this - and, you might even think it’s one of the better ones. If you dialled out after the first film, then you’ll likely dial out of this one too. I thought it was loads of fun.

@@iansmart4158 It probably depends what you didn’t like about 5. I personally have enjoyed them all, but view 3 and 4 as the weaker entries, even though there was stuff to like in both of them. Kermode jokingly made a reference to Scooby Doo, but I do think he’s hit the nail on the head of why I like it. I love a good ‘ol who’s under the mask mystery, and until they subvert the rules and ditch that particular conceit, I’ll probably enjoy these slasher whodunnits.

Disagree with this. (Unless we're talking about #3. In which case I agree wholeheartedly.) But in my opinion #6 was a really fun watch and the best Scream movie since #2, with some of the best writing and character work. Certainly better than #3, #4 and #5, without their structural issues (all three movies spent way too long on a basically pointless character who gets killed off at the end of the first act, dragging the movie out. #6 avoids this trap.) The thing is... if you're not into what Scream does, this movie isn't going to change your mind. Personally I really liked it, but if you don't, your reaction will probably be closer to Mark Kermode's. And that's fine. A lot of this is subjective. Objectively, I would say #6 is a better Scream movie than the last three just in terms of its writing, pacing, tension and horror elements. But again, that's not going to matter to anyone who isn't already a fan of the Scream movies.

Scream VI is probably one of the most entertaining installments in the franchise and feels like a really fun love letter to giallo films with a splash of modern social commentary. I agree. Just saw it a few hours ago and quite liked it. His criticism about people getting stabbed and not hurt is spot on though. It got somewhat ridiculous by the end on how easily people were jumping back up to run or fight after being stabbed (sometimes more than once). But that was my ONLY criticism of the film. I still really liked it overall. This Scream especially had me rooting for all the characters to survive. Usually in slasher flicks people are just fodder besides the established lead(s) but this time around I really liked almost every single character and got super tense when they were in jeopardy. But to each their own. He liked Smile and Black Phone and I thought those movies was cliched and nauseatingly dull. That’s why horror rules. There’s so many varieties that anybody can find one they enjoy.
@eldante4139
@eldante4139 Жыл бұрын
This has always been the way though and is probably reflective of how villains and characters in other slasher movies avoid similar fate. The idea is that Scream is a riff on the genre and not to be taken at face value and so some of its ridiculous nature can be excused. For example how many times does ghost face get clattered around the head and not once does it ever affect the killer. Not once do any of the suspects have subsequent head or face injuries. It’s always as if they were never attacked. And yet if you’ve been hit hard around the head with a blunt object you’ll at least be dazed. Ghost face always seems to have supernatural recovery skills from the off and yet the character isn’t a invincible beast or monster but instead just a masked psycho. It is ridiculous how one of the characters survives at the end but that kinda stuff is to be taken as part of the film whether you like it or not.

Scream 6 was absolutely amazing, and I love how the movie didn't play on the Satb films like the other films and the plot and motive were purely on REVENGE. The opening scene, in my opinion, was one of the best since the first film. I would so it's up there, but the dialogue from the first one sets the tone by itself, that's what makes it iconic. But Scream 6 was GREAT! I feel that they shouldn't bring Sidney back and if they do I would hope they kill the majority of the new cast and their storyline - and bring in a new storyline to bring Sidney back. Other than that, leave her character alone and don't try to kill her off or bring her character back.

I was slightly “meh” on the killer reveal in this one as it’s always going to be some variation of a new character with slightly convoluted motives but at the end of the day that’s not why I’m watching! I thought this balanced tension and laughs well with the token Scream + Horror references and subversions. I cared a lot more about our newer characters to the point where I was weened off the need for those legacy cameos. Very successful outing for the 6th in a franchise and excited to see how this new trilogy ends (presumably with a much higher body count)!

The Scream franchise quickly devolved into the exact thing it was making fun of in the original. It became formulaic to the point of boredom now when we are watching these movies. We know there will be all the same beats and same tropes and same everything because unfortunately marketing teams knows thats what will sell the most tickets. The best way to have done a new movie that actually pays respect to the original, is to have a fresh take or at least a new twist on who the ghost face killer ends up being. The beginning of the this 6th movie ALMOST tried to give us a new spin on the genre, but it just went straight into the same pattern of a Scream movie. I hope some day we will get better than just average sequels to the originals that made movie history. Edit: the ONLY clever bit that I enjoyed was with Gale Weathers character and her trick with the phone, the movie needed WAY more of this type of clever writing

As a Scream fanboy, I can say I enjoyed it slightly more than Mark did. It does feel like they're making these only for the fanbase now, which doesn't bother me, obviously. But it is true that it is a rehash of the same ideas for a different generation with a different view of the world and different references, and the people in the cinema with me were enjoying it a lot, with lots of gasps and laughs and guffaws and someone apparently impersonating a goat every time a jump scare happened. Maybe that's why I enjoyed it. And Mark is absolutely right to point out that characters can outlive anything. When in the original, every injury mattered and had big repercussions on the characters, in Scream 6, you know that if the head is intact, the body will heal itself quickly. Still, I had fun, if only for the goat.

When this movie finished my initial thoughts was wow, that was great. The action, kills, mystery is great, BUT. This movie falls apart in the final 20 minutes and here is why... Not ONE person who mattered died. Not one!!! Why is this critically important this time? Because it turns out the whole motive was cold hard revenge, and yet who did they kill......2 at the start who had nothing to do with Richie's death, 2 people in a shop unrelated to his death, one of their college friends unrelated to his death. They literally did not kill anyone who had any involvement with their motive. This is a massive oversight and makes them the worst ghost face killers of all time. All the 'core 4' surviving was silly anyway, but when you add the motive in, it makes absolutely zero sense. This is a great film up until the last 15 minutes where it just completely falls apart. Also, how can 3 ghostfaces be so ruthless yet as soon as the masks come off at the end they are pathetic and get dominated by 2 little girls. Should have had at least 1 of the sisters die along with another of the 4. 9/10 first 90 mins. 2/10 last 25 mins.

I get why people like these movies, but Scream has always been a massively overrated franchise from the very beginning. The "meta commentary" has always been overstated and not nearly as clever as people think it is, and there's never really been a mystery element to any of them; no one ever figures out anything, stuff just happens for 90 or so minutes until the killer arbitrarily unmasks themselves and gives a hammy monolouge about why they did it. It's a formula, and people like their formula. And again, fine, I don't begrudge that. But these have never been more than glorified B-movies.

Still think this should have been called Scream 6: Ghostface Takes Manhattan!

I enjoyed it and it had some very well staged sequences, particularly on the train, but the conclusion was convoluted; it was a better film than Scream 3.

I loved the scream movies growing up. I dressed as ghostface for Halloween more than once. I still have a ghost face costume in my closet, just in case I ever want to use it for something. And Scream 6 is one of the worst horror films I've ever seen. I will never watch another Scream installment ever again for as long as I live. It completely ruined the franchise for me. After I finished watching the movie, I held my ghostface mask over my trash can trying to determine whether to just be done with it entirely. But I still kept it, for some reason, probably nostalgia. I will watch the first film again, as I still love it and it gets better with each watch, but the other films in the scream franchise do not exist as far as I'm concerned and I will never give them the time of day ever again.

I do think this is harsh. I really enjoyed it. In fact I like them all. It’s popcorn entertainment but done well.

I thought the original Scream was massively overrated and not at all clever, so I've avoided all sequels.

This movie was great, almost as good as the first. I respect your take but it's in the minority.

C'mon Mark. This movie isn't trying to be anything more than "stabby stabby stabby" and there's nothing wrong with that. It's a competently made, competently acted slasher movie. Seems like you were more harsh on this simply because its the "sixth" of the franchise.

There are plenty of mindless Slasher movies but the point of Scream is that it isn't one of those.

To be honest, I found the original 'Scream' to be a bit tame, overrated and thought it was having its cake and eating it - any good bits were intended to be good and any bad or cliched bits were intended to be 'meta', so the film was pretty much critic-proof. I've never had any desire to watch any of the sequels. It's funny hearing Mark say the things about this one that I thought were the case for the original. Anyway, always fun to hear a good Kermodian rant.

I did think it confusing that characters were throwing themselves about after being gutted like a large animal. We not talking about a little walk hear we're talking about full on running down the street. One character gets stabbed thtough scar tissue. Last time I looked scar tissue don't heal.

Interesting. I didn’t like the film, didn’t care for the new characters, and was irritated that the film seemed to have no teeth, unwilling to kill off any of the Franchises new leads. And the reveal of the killers is sooo incredibly dull, people are not this homicidal. However I can recognise that these directors know tension, and can construct a chase scene/kill scene very well, much better than David Gordon Green for example. And in the grand scheme of things, aside from Chucky, scream has done the best with its longevity
