This is a comprehensive and valuable tutorial, many thanks. It helped a lot to see how the weaker solution changed colors vs the immediate blackening of the stronger solution. Very good demo! I do think you need a neutralizing bath in baking soda and water after rinsing with water. This stops further darkening of the patina. Important to prevent becoming blacker, or colors changing and not controlled any more. What does it hurt? If it is not necessary then it does no harm. If it is necessary, you saved the piece. Either way, I think its worth doing. Sealer coat: There is a good video on KZbin about sealer coats and wax. Its best to leave item as is. When you add a sealer coat or even microcrystalline wax, it changes the light refraction of the metal so it dulls out the rainbow colors. There is no CHEMICAL change, only a PERCEPTION change or physical change in the way the light bounces off the piece. Best left unsealed. Naturally, this is not an item of jewelry to be exposed to other chemicals but to be kept dry and free from chemical contact. There will be a gradual change in patina over time, but so what?

Excellent information. There I feed is a lot of incorrect I formation out there, like neutralizing LOS with sodium bicarbonate.

Thanks for this tutorial! I'm a little confused as to why so many sources say to neutralise the liver of sulphur solution with baking soda, if liver of sulphur is actually alkaline and not acidic. Does this mean we don't have to put the piece in a baking soda solution to "stop the patination process" like so many sources say? Also, what is the best way to dispose of it? Some say to just pour it down the drain and run water for a few minutes after, others say to mix baking soda in to neutralise, but again, that doesn't make sense to me if the liver of sulphur isn't actually acidic.

How could I achieve a rainbow iridescent gold on cast bronze? Would it be a cold immersion in liver of sulphur?

Thank you for the video - I have never tried the LOS but just bought some and waiting for it to arrive. However made a pendant in non-tarnish copper (rookie mistake?) and want to ask if you think the LOS will made any difference to the copper wire, thanks Jean

Great video, Kim! Very helpful as I am oxidizing a sterling silver ring right now. I wonder - how long do you estimate you leave your silver in the liver of sulphur? Thanks, Kristin

Hi Kristin! Glad you enjoyed the video, if the liver of sulphur is freshly mixed it will turn black in a matter of seconds, so not long at all. You can read more about using it here on our advice page 😊 www.kernowcraft.com/jewellery-making-tips/texturing-patina-finishing-advice/how-to-create-patina-with-liver-of-sulphur

Very informative video Kim!, but somewhat distracting that the video keeps going back to front, as can be seen by labels on packages. In the first half of the video, the Litmus paper's wording is back to front, then the wording is the correct way around. In the last part of the video, the images are once again back to front, as can be seen by all the wording on packages and books.

So the rough ring was just treated with liver of sulphur or did you dip it in coffee?
@kimthomson4004 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony, sorry I've just seen this. I can't remember as it was so long ago but generally, I only ever use LOS but other people swear by adding coffee to their LOS solution. I know I tried that one one of the pieces here but I didn't notice much of a difference.
