While its true that he has played these pieces before, but its not like he has them memorized at all times. Even if its something he has performed before he still needs to practice it before he would go on stage and perform it. Which is why it is still considered sight reading

most "i've never played music" comment ever. At that level they have played all of it, the "sight-reading" is how well they can flawlessly play the music from the sheet- also Ray isn't allowed to take artistic interpretation; which would hurt him when playing from memory. What you are saying is the equivalent of comparing computer programmers and saying "this guy wrote x code one time 10 decades ago so he can just bang out the same code from rote memory," it's absurd. Both ppl know how to code, and can recognize it; but, it isn't just stored in their memory perfectly like a robot.

Coding is not just “code”. It’s mostly problem solving. If the person has written it before, he has at least seen the solution which gives him a huge advantage. Ray’s emotion can only put into his play when he has done it many times before.

Yoeun, who plays so well that he can't believe he's young even though he's playing among adults, was so cool, and Leichen's instrument sounded so different that I felt so respectful, and everyone was so good that I couldn't believe he was playing it. If Yoeun had filmed with friends of her younger age, I think Yoeun's skills would have been clearly seen, but it was regrettable that she was mixed among adults.

I honestly dont believe there are any losers here . The level of skills displayed by the two young musicians was 👍👍😮😅😊. We, the viewers are also winners. Ray Chen had age/experience/life, which is reflected in his pieces. Tq for this upload. 🙏💝💐

This is not sight reading. Most of these pieces are in the standard repertoire for any advanced violinist. Note: Ray Chen states at the beginning that he is "not good at sightreading".

I saw host "Jasmine" Choi give a flute master class and later perform in a small auditorium. The flute students were in awe and Jasmine gave great constructive criticism and examples. I admire her very much!
