I grew up in the sticks . We used wood heat and a kerosene heater. Mom would turn on the kerosene heater in the morning until the wood burning stove was restoked . People complain about the smell but it for me . Takes me back to my warm childhood bed and breakfast ready and on the table . I keep kerosene lamps like ae had growing and a kerosene heater as well . You never know when you might need it with a camp stove . Its just a good idea to have basics in case of an emergency

Very informative, level-headed video. I did chuckle at your insistence that you’re not a prepper (as if distancing yourself from them like it’s a bad thing). Then I heard what you said and realized that your image of a prepper is someone who buys things and sticks them on a shelf and waits. Legitimate preppers agree with you that you need to practice with your equipment and actually use it to know it. In any case, I think you’re idea of kerosene as a non-electric indoor heater alternative is right on! I also appreciated that you didn’t smash the panic button on the carbon monoxide paranoia like is many videos do these days. Most people don’t understand what produces and doesn’t produce CO. Thanks again for a good video. I went and bought one of these.

These heaters are a lifesaver. Used them for 20 years so far Always Keep good ventilation ! Saved us last winter here in British Columbia with -16 outside and the furnace broke down in my 2500 sq foot house . I used my other 24,000 btu convection heater . Placed it in my basement and opened up all the doors and a window on either end of my house . The entire house was warm . The furnace repairman was impressed. I can cook on top of the larger one as well . I use this one in my 30 foot RV. Keep lots of ventilation. These heaters throw alot of heat . Mine do not stink while operating. Light these and keep on high till that chimney gets red hot then put on low . I always light and extinguish outside . Use mine on the patio year round and at the campsites . Kids and wife now prefer them sometimes to a fire , instant heat , no smoke . You can roast marshmallows on this one ! Sitting in front of it now . Pretty safe . The wife actually kicked it over in the RV . Zero damages or fuel spilled or smoke. Very impressive . Don't try it . Empty the tank while traveling. The tank will jiggle and leak fuel .

It took me a year and a half to come to the same conclusions you did. I wish I had seen your video earlier. I too find 2 box ones work better the big round one, and I actually threw my dyna glo away because it kept smoking, I bought a mr. funnel to filter our condensed water and they work fine now. You sir are a genius! another benefit of the box ones, is you don't have to turn it off to refill it. I take the fuel canister out and fill it in garage and bring it back while it is still running, and when I want to store them over the summer, the fuel is easy to take out and I do a dry burn before storing.

I agree with you Matt. This 10,000 BTU heater has plenty enough output to make an average sized room more than comfortable. There are no fumes except at startup which I do in the garage for ten minutes before I bring the heater in the house.

We have just purchased one for emergency heating. The weather is becoming unstable everywhere, even though we live in the southern hemisphere and nearer the top end of Australia, we have been keeping a close watch on the weather which is now heading into the Grand Solar Minimum which most people haven't heard off. After hearing about the weather that hit Texas, it has proven that regardless to where you live, you never know if your going to get effected by adverse weather events. It doesn't need for the temperature to drop much below our normal temperatures for us to feel the cold. Logically if we reach that stage here, then it's likely we may have issues with our power supply. Even though we have that covered also, when you are only producing limit power, it's won't be a good time to be running an electric heater panel. We have turned from simply being prepared for our cyclone seasons into preppers. I think many others have been going the same way, even in my country. After watching what is going in currently, I feel we made the right move six years ago.

Man, this guy's a prepper! That's exactly what a prepper would say "I'm not a prepper!". Good thing they've got that look-up index for KZbin content creators, so good people know where to go when the worst happens. I hope all these preppers have enough supplies for people like me and my extended family, who aren't paranoid preppers. Prepping is too expensive for me, it's expensive enough to have hardware and lots of ammo for everyone. We figure nice people will let us stay with them, no reason to spend money on fuel, food, medicine, etc when other people are probably willing to share. We wouldn't be dead beats though, we'd do our part and provide security. Thanks for the video! Oh, and there's no look up index.

Excellent idea to run your kerosene through a fuel filter funnel before putting it into the heater!

Nice cautionary video with some good advice. We had an ice storm here a few years ago and were without power for 23 hours in the winter. Others were out for up to 6 days. I collect kerosene lanterns so had several to use and lots of kerosene. The lanterns alone kept me and my parrot warm enough, but any longer and my bird would have been (cold) toast I think. At that point I decided I needed a plan and got my first kerosene heater and now have several vintage and modern models. I started collecting kerosene stoves too, since eating cold left-over chinese food wasn't that nice. I'm all set for the next ice storm.

What is considered "vintage" as far as the heaters go
@timkempowski70126 жыл бұрын
Custody Warriors vintage would be something like an Aladdin, Perfection or what I love are lamps like B&H , Rayo, and Royal. Bright light and heat when the power is out👍🏻 check out the perfection heater with the Pyrex globe....l own one and it’s my favorite, the pattern of light it cast on a ceiling is a work of art and the globe gives enough light to read or play board games...heat output is around 15-20k btu. I’ll use another older perfection with the rolled steel chimney and adjustable top vent to cook or heat my basement. Sorry to ramble on but I own several vintage kero appliances. Look for a few perfection heater videos, like everything that’s built to last they require some maintenance and good storage practices but, they’ll outlast you and your kids’ kid will auction it off for $$

Just picked up a 10000 btu Radiant Kerosene heater. Last winter, here in the Catskills, we had power outage after power outage and nearly froze to death. Almost impossible to get anyone to put in a wood stove or an electrician up here with the building boom that's going on, so, I'm hoping this will do the trick. Kerosene is almost 60 bucks for a 5 gallon container at the cheapest big box store - Tractor Supply. I haven't checked out the local NY gas stations yet. Thanks for this video.

I just picked one up as a backup and tried it overnight. at 20f + or - , our 2 br house insulated with 2ft snow on the roof in south east AK stayed at a comfortable 65f all night. I'm very happy with it.

I agree I think small units 10,000 to 12,000 BTUs are better than the bigger units, The old perfection kerosene heaters put out 11,000 BTUs and work very well, Even the antique ones. I love them, I bought two of them and will be putting them to use this winter.
@gerardjones78814 жыл бұрын
This is all I use in my house in Northern Maine. I have the big 25K one but its too hot. Gas stations sell kero here, 2.83 a gal right now. It costs me less than $160 a month to keep temp around 68F. I turn it off when I sleep to save fuel and run a small elec heater. Really like these heaters, dry burn them to clean the wick occasionally. I dry burn repeatedly to get the wick very clean. Takes all day but it works.

I have the kerosene and propane as well. Also electric of course! I like the ceramic heaters it warm me in my seat next to the computer! Grid goes out I am ready for a short time anyway! I have used kerosene off and on over 40 years and no problems as long as you are responsible and safe. Same as you have to be with anything like an automobile...nothing is idiot proof or insurance would not be so high!

My heat pump went out and I'm using my kerosene heater from my garage, too (and a couple space heaters). I'm not interested in using kerosene full time, or I'd want a 2nd heater, but it's working just fine to take the chill off until the repair man can get here in a couple days.

Thanks for the video, I’m looking at buying a modern heater. I’ve restored one perfection that was being used as a flower pot stand 😱and bought another years back that’ll be powder coated too (projects...) It was already in good condition 🙏 my other experience is with the center draft lamps. I love the vintage kero appliances cause you can usually cook or light with them unlike the modern heaters but with having kids there’s something about having safety if they knock it over....last word....never run any supplemental heating while sleeping, people die every year from doing this!

I can understand why people are using Diesel though I hear some parts of the states they don't sell it at the pumps and can only buy it at stores and the stuff at stores is way to high and its also hard to find in my area I only know of about 3 gas stations that sells it.

Good tips. Thanks. I think I’m one of those who don’t know how to use one. Mine lasted about 5 or 6 burnings - Red Stone - in my defense because the wick wouldn’t go out I had to siphon the gas out of it to force it to flame out - well , it still burned another 5 hours or so. Now it won’t work. Just seems like a really peice of junk - it’s the tractor supply brand for $99.
@nelsonketch74477 жыл бұрын
David, I'm guessing, but it sounds like your using the red dyed kerosene. Kerosene wicks on lanterns and heaters don't burn well with it. You have to take the heater outside or to the garage and burn it dry about once a week. I the wick won't retract it's usually from not burning the heater dry every now and then. What happens is black tar builds up on the wick and keeps it from retracting, that's why the flame wouldn't go out. To restore your heater to working order, take it outside on a calm day or in your garage with the door open to keep the wind off the heater. Have the heater almost out of kerosene and light it, set it on high, and let it burn out, follow the instructions to get at the wick, don't remove it, just crunch the black tarry stuff with your fingers or a small set of plyers until you can brush it off with a paper towel. You may have to burn it dry a couple of times since yours seems to be quite bad. after that fill it with kerosene, try to use the clear stuff not the red stuff. and it should burn good again. Amish use Jet A fuel where I live in there lanterns and heaters as the only other kerosene is the crappy red stuff. If all you have is the red dyed stuff, burn the heater dry every few days and it should be fine.

Question for you: On the side of the wick here the electric start contacts are, my flame is higher. Even on Low setting, the flame will grow up and become yellow. I think the igniter contacts are deforming the wick. I have examined it and tried to figure out how to remedy it, but I don’t know what to do. Do you have any suggestions?

The one I have is an HNM-110, they come in several names but all say something-110 and have the tall chimney like this one. I have only used Jet A fuel from the airport as that is what the Amish and everyone else uses around here. I wouldn’t buy one of these off eBay, because ebays prices are about equal to or above new. These seem to run around $125 - $145 new. Look on Miles Stairs website as he has a whole section on properly burning kerosene heaters.
