I've found that it does work okay in my old Perfection (all cotton wick) heater, but I never had any luck with modern heaters that have the fiberglass-topped wicks. In my Perfection, I mix a gallon of Kerosene to 4 gallons of diesel and that helps it to wick better and I don't have to clean the wick very often. Don't really notice any smell with the Perfection heater, but I sure did with the fiberglass-topped ones.

Hey Richard I guess the old school wicks are better. If you could subscribe to my KZbin channel. That would be great. Let me know what else you find with the newer wicks
@Jollyprez2 жыл бұрын
@@RusticTrends All-cotton wicks are not "better" - they just have different strengths and weaknesses. Main weakness is that they need more maintenance, and need to be replaced more often. Fiberglass wicks do not like dyed fuels, and require cleaner fuel. Though modern "winter" diesel is very close to kerosene, it's not completely there. I have Perfection and Aladdin heaters that use all-cotton wicks. The Perfection can handle winter diesel ok - though I add about an ounce of 91% isopropyl alcohol per tankful. The Aladdin heaters are pickier, and seem to like only kerosene. I also have a "Rainbow" heater that can take EITHER fiberglass or all-cotton wicks. I even have a oil furnace that does not use wicks and can run without electricity ( haven't tried it, yet ) and has 51,000 BTU!

You’ve described my experience to a tee. Not sure what the other guys are doing to make it work. But there is a lot of mention of using a 100% cotton wick. I’ve searched and I cannot find one for my particular heater. I’d like to experiment with a homemade wick made from 100% wool felt. Cut it to the same diameter and stitch or staple the edges together to create a cylinder. Seems like a simple thing to try. If anyone has experimented making their own wick please let me know. Thank you. I’m not concerned about the smell so much as I am only trying to heat my Shelterlogic Shed enough to melt the snow off, when it snows.
@RusticTrends3 жыл бұрын
Hey Ed. One thing I have found. You can mix with half diesel and half kerosene. That will work also. I hope you have subscribed. Let me know how you make out with it
@EdFilips3 жыл бұрын
I’m also wondering if partly why this won’t work properly is that the Air to Fuel ratio is different for diesel than it is for kerosene. AKA the stoichiometric ratio. If the heater is designed to burn kerosene at a specific rate(rate of fuel volume through the wick) the air volume would have to be correct. i don’t think the diesel can wick fast enough to burn properly. Diesel’s ratio is 14.5:1, kerosene is 15.6:1. not sure but makes sense to me. Maybe I’m overthinking but I cannot for the life of me get mine to burn properly. I’ve used alcohol, conditioner and acetone, burns for a while then flame dies down to a flickering blue ring chasing around the wick.
@EdFilips3 жыл бұрын
I found out something fairly interesting this evening I’m still playing with mine with the diesel. I noticed that if I pressurize my heater’s fuel tank slightly, the flame size increases and starts producing more heat. I removed the tank cap to check the level, and noticed the flames grew a little higher. So I said hmm, what if I dialed my air compressor regulator down real low, and applied a bit of air to the tank what would happen. Sure enough I dialed down to about 3 psi, stuck my air blow gun into the filler hole and plugged around it the best I could with my thumb, the flames shot up and actually started making the mesh glow with no added smoke or soot. Fumes still aren’t great. Not sure of the long term effects but I’m going to create some sort of plug the size of the filler opening that will accommodate my air blow gun and inject some air for awhile see what happens.

Hi, A few things that might help. I have restored over a half dozen heaters, the model you have is the ONLY one I came across that stunk no matter what I tried, it seems to be the fault of that catalytic screen on top, the black carbon buildup needs to be crushed by putting wick over pipe or something and hammering, crushing with pliers or channels also works, I got it with kerosene also and diesel actually seems a little better. The line on wick is for correct installation height. I'll end by saying any other heater will give you a better all around experience using it, sorry.

Hey Bob. I always like the input from others. With mine I don’t get the smell. Maybe it’s the brand of wick. Also. I’m now just using K1 kerosene. I’m glad you like the video. I hope you have subscribed to my KZbin channel. Thanks
@sandys97913 жыл бұрын
This heater wont work with diesel unless you take the wick out all the time and smash the carbon off of it. Been there tried that. It works but is a pain and eventually beats the wick to death. Go with a kerosun moonlighter or one of its variants with a cotton wick of you want to use diesel.

Some of the differences in opinion regarding diesel fuel may have to do with WHERE and WHEN the diesel was purchased. "Winter" diesel is a different formulation than "summer" diesel. Also, winter diesel blends are different depending on how far north you are and how long into the winter you purchase it. Winter diesel is "winter" because kerosene is added to it to prevent gelling in very cold weather. If you're in Texas ( normally ) they don't even HAVE winter diesel. If you're in Canada - then you do. All that said - fiberglass-wicked heaters probably aren't going to like even winter diesel, and certainly not summer diesel.

@@RusticTrends I saw that you were using 70% Iso alcohol. You have to use 91-99% Isop alcohol. 70% has too much water in it and will cause it to smell just like if you use year old kersene that has got water in it. You also need to dry burn it each time you use it if you are using diesel. That will keep it from getting so much carbon on top.

RUBBING ALCOHOL has water in it, 5% PUT some of in a jug of gas or diesel let it sit for a day look on the bottom, the water always goes to the bottom, and wicks do not like water PERIOD. 2. Fill your tank just enough for how long you plan on using the stupid heater. DO NOT PUTTY OUT FLAME IN MIDDLE CYCLE. 3 Let the damn heater burn itself out (DRY BURN) 4 PUT THE WICK UP ON HIGH light her up again, it may burn little or it may not.. May smoke some.. Let it burn completly out on the second light up If it doesnt work, then you are doing something wrong. i have the SAME EXACT KEROSUN heater like yours. i burned a hole barrel of DIESEL in it without issue. and as well in my other KEROSENE HEATERS. I telling you what i have learned and when the wick CRUSTS UP.. iF NOT please by all means BUY THE $6.00 WORTHLESS SHIT JET FUEL AT $6 a gullin.. However you do it. atleast its not my money i throwing away. I will continue to burn the HOME HEATING OIL (RED DYE DIESEL) at $2.00 a gullin.
