Deafheaven's philosophy is what the future of metal needs. Image is pointless. If you're a normal dude who likes extreme metal but still wants to have some heart to your music just do it. It works for BTBAM quite well

Agreed, and that's how metal was back in the 70s, early 80s. then fashion crept in, then elitists, and now you have the bullshit that we have today. it's a shame really. these guys are just doing their thing, soaking in influences and creating something unique rather than choosing to fit within prepackaged genres. anyone who gets personally angry about this has much deeper issues, mostly stemming from jealousy (although they will vehemently deny it). These elitists tend to praise anything that is unique from the status quo of modern society, but only if you follow the underground's rules of how metal you're supposed to be. When you start looking within the metal community, they are just as critical of anything that doesn't fit the models of THEIR status quo of how metal should be. It is 100% hypocrisy, but they are too far stuck up their own elitist asses even see it. It would be pretty funny if it weren't so damned pathetic.

I love me some extreme metal/music but I really respect what Deafheaven are doing for the genre, it's exciting, it's still fairly new (yes I know Alcest did blackgaze first) and I can't wait for the boundaries they will be pushing. I fucking love Emperor, Bathory, Darkthrone, etc. But fuck the elitists/extremists fucks in the metal community. Whatever happened to having a good time jamming to your favourite songs? this sound is so unique, only became a fan after their latest release 2018 - but now I have all their stuff. Definitely will be supporting whatever they put out in the future. Love their sound... only critique I have is in the mixing process, I think they intentionally put the vocals wayyy back in the mix, but their vocals could use some better mixing imo... but everything else is so awesome! big fan!

+Stratosfear the God Since you used Lifelover as an example then you must mean dark in the depressive sense. Lifelover's more post-black themselves too they aren't like Silencer or Xasthur. Deafheaven isn't as dark obviously, especially since some of their songs are mostly in major, but since they do use blast beats and heavy tremolo they can still associate with the genre.
