such a wonderful place you have created! how do you protect them during cold winters you have in Hungary?
@dancsiga
@dancsiga 4 жыл бұрын
They are mostly winter hardy plants that you can protect during the cold months in a pretty simple way. Just cover the top so no water can enter to the stem and freeze there. He probably also covers the ground with bark/hay.

What are you doing with this plants in winter. I am planning now and build a mediteranian garden in northserbia. I was last year at my relatives in dalmatia and I was falling in love with mediteranian garden. Now I have an olivetree, granatapplw and some palms, which I seed on my own. Do your palms outdoor in winter and hard frost?

Hi. Great yard! What techniques do you use to allow your palms to survive the winters there in Hungary? I'd imagine you're in an even colder climate than I'm in. I'm in the NYC, USA metro area and it's USDA Zone 7A (annual average minimum temperature not less than 0F to 5F. You must be a full zone lower. But even if you're around 7A, or higher... What are you doing to keep the palm safe in winter? Have you ever used infrared thermal heaters, like outdoor patio heaters? Infrared heaters are especially efficient and good because they don't waste energy heating the air around the palms, but only the palm itself directly. Whatever the infrared light shines on, gets heated. So... it's very efficient. I'm going to begin growing palms, too. And this is the method I will use. But what techniques for the winter did you use to keep your palms looking so perfect? Thanks for your time. I love talking about palms. I imagine you do, too. Mick

Budapest = USDA 8a-8b, for example, this winter, was the coldest -5 -6 Celsius at night, cold winters are long gone...

@@andrassolyom983 Don't be misleading the gentleman from New York. Budapest is far from being USDA 8a, let alone USDA zone 8b. The city itself lies between 6 and 7 and with the current global warming, it is prolly in the 7a. Maybe in some private backyards within the city center/good isolation from winds - 7b. New York is more like 7b/8a. Also - USDA zones are counted over a large period of time (years) and divided so that the mean min temperature is created. However, there are more factors that should be counted in for mediterranean vegetation to grow - sunshine hours, rain distribution, winds etc. One winter in 10-15 years, you are gonna have minus 15-20 celcius for a few days and everything semi-exotic will die. To give you a perspective - on the southern Bulgarian seaside (south of Burgas) you can spot Pomegrenates, Olive Trees, Kiwis, Trachycarpus Fortunei and even Washingtonia Filifera (not Robusta) growing without any winter protection. And that zone lies between 8a and 8b. Forget about any of those (except for maybe Trachycarpus) growing in Budapest w/o passive or active winter protection.
