Factoring -- especially trinomials -- is something that takes practice. It also helps if you're familiar with mathematical logic and concepts. When you understand what you're looking at, you don't have to memorize stuff. First, you need to know what it means to factor (verb) in math (change something to a multiplication problem). You also need to know what it means to specifically factor a Quadratic (the factors of the first and last terms have to add up to the middle one. The approach he is using is typically called "The AC Method + Grouping." It uses substitution and is based on the Distributive Property. However, while the strategy he is using is probably the most common, it's not the only one. I am putting a link to a video that shows several methods. Perhaps, one of these will help you to understand things better. @Terry Kenneth The method he is teaching is the most common one. So, of course, it's going to work. It's based on substitution and the Distributive Property. There are, however, faster methods -- if you actually understand what you're doing.

You guys I hope you're able to see this before you leave for school. Sorry for the late response QnQ x^2 - 5x + 4 You gotta imagine like a 1 infront the x squared and then multiply that by 4. Then you can use the ac formula. Which is. ac = 4 What by what will multiply to give you back 4? And then added up together to give you back your middle term which is negative 5x which would be b in the equation. So how I did it is as follows: ac = -1 × -4 = 4 b = -1 + -4 = -5 Oki so you have to use the same terms in both ac and b. Make sure both numbers give you the product. Then you just switch your new numbers with your middle term. Therefore: x^2 - x - 4x + 4 (- x is the - 1 from above that we used to get our products) Factorize now. Pull out what is common. x (x - 1) -4 (x - 1) (Tip: whatever you find in the first bracket just slap it on the other side. Make sure the expression above multiplies back to give you the equation you took it from to make sure its correct.) Then you just put in brackets everything on the outside and then use 1 of the similar expressions that are inside the brackets like this. (x-4) (x-1) Thats how I got it....Imma really not good at explaining things....but I hope you understand.....please get it on time.
