On the fateful day of 2nd February 1980, our father, the renowned, beloved, legendary music composer and singer, Pt. Shivramji left us with a loss beyond the void of his music. Having begun his musical journey at the raw age of 16, Pt. Shivram ji was first bestowed with the honour of performing in Maharaja Umed Singh’s royal court as a music composer. Following which , from 1948-1950 he graced His Master’s Voice - a major British record label as a music composer, in the city of Lucknow. And then in 1951, he found his calling in the city of Mumbai, the hub of Indian cinema and music. Soon after, he started working with renowned film makers like V. Shantaram and gave music to his popular films like Teen Batti Chaar Rasta, Surang and many more. He then continued his climb with films like Phool Aur Kaliyan , Kaale Gore, for which he received national recognition in the form of Suvarna Padak (gold medal) from the then Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. Apart from giving music to films like Unchi Haweli, Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan, Sati Anusuya, Pt. Shivramji also gave music to Sati Nari, a 1966 film. Tum Nacho Ras Barse, his song from the same film was awarded Swami Haridas Award by Sur Singaar. Pt. Shivram ji musical caliber was not limited to composing only. He was an exceptional singer as well as a harmonium player too. One could listen to him play and sing for hours together!
Having worked with the who’s who of mainstream Hindi film and music industry viz legendary Mohammed Rafi Saab, Lata Mangeshkar, Mahendra Kapoor and so on, Pt. Shivramji’s musical journey, however, was not limited to Hindi Language only. He composed many memorable songs in varied languages such as Rajasthani, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Haryanvi etc. In fact, Mohammed Rafi Saab’s first Rajasthani song , Baba Sa Ri Laadli was composed by Pt. Shivramji .
Hence, today, on Pt. Shivram ji’s 40th death anniversary; his monumental musical journey, his teachings, his music are all we are left with, to cherish and celebrate.
But we sincerely hope that his legacy and memory live on, in our hearts, music and beyond, for generations to come.
