KESKUS construction update year-end 2023

Taking a look back to the construction progress over 2023, the year started with completion of the deep foundation work of caissons, micropiles and shoring. Now these are all buried as the structure rises back up from the depths of the excavation that followed.
In the video, the vertical construction is the star of the show: the elevator shaft, basement walls and columns are formed and poured. In the case of the walls, the pouring is done by shotcrete, a process of spraying concrete through a pneumatic gun. That is then hand smoothed with trowels and left to cure.
Chemical additives in the concrete used in this cold weather cause an exothermic reaction that keeps the concrete from freezing before it cures.
Looking ahead, the ground floor slab over the basement portion will be poured. This will be done overhead before the final basement floating slab is installed over the sandwiched vibration isolation material.
Before the year is out, a tent will be erected over the tunnels to maintain heat as the TTC undertakes the tunnel remediation work.
