Because they don't give them proper calcium sources like they require, so the bigger snails rasp at the smaller snails shells often killing them. Poor husbandry. In the pet trade the small ones would be culled twice... They lay so many eggs because only about five or of hundreds live to adulthood... There's lots that aren't genetically adequate and shouldn't be bred, in nature they would have been eaten or died. And these people are selling them as food so if they price per snail they need to have all of them at our above a certain size to price them all the same. So I'm sure the bigger the snail the more money or they just wait for the smaller ones to grow but I don't see that happening because the small ones are usually not well off enough to live proper lives. This is sick and inhumane.
