I'm autistic and part of that involves being weird about certain foods, ketchup being one of them. I tasted it once as a kid, thought it tasted weird, and it firmly went in my brain's "do not eat" list. Like I once got upset when it seemed like a sandwich I got had ketchup on it, but I later realized it was barbeque sauce and therefore fine (even though I now realize that bbq sauce is basically ketchup with molasses). I'm fine with ketchup now and I really like mixing it with mayo and making "fry sauce", but for a while I was like, actively avoiding it and borderline scared of it. So that's my childhood ketchup trauma story.

The section on formative experiences was fascinating to me. My sister hates mayonnaise because it was used as a natural lice treatment on her as a child. She had a friend who always brought lice into the house, so she had a head covered in mayo at least half a dozen times. The smell of it makes her sick even now that she's an adult. There are a surprising number of our opinions that are based on biases from our youth, many of which have a huge permanent impact on our lives. So try your best to treat your fellow person with kindness, because maybe they are the way they are because their grandma smothered all the food in ketchup.

Ketchup haters are just being contrarians. They'll be like, "Ugh, ketchup is gross, it's too sweet!" and then say they like honey mustard better, as if that's any less sweet. The "no ketchup on hot dogs" thing always gets me. Like sure, I won't if I'm getting a Chicago dog "dragged through the garden," but even then you'll notice what toppings it does have (sweet relish, mustard, sometimes freaking TOMATOE SLICES) still check off a lot of the same flavor boxes as ketchup: sweetness, tanginess and some acidity. Maybe a TINY bit more heat from the sport peppers, but those are very mild peppers. It doesn't have to be the be-all, end-all of sauces, but it certainly has its place. I love a good sriracha ketchup personally. Don't even need to buy a bottle of it, just add a little sriracha to your ketchup. I'll often make that for dipping French fries. Delicious. Adds the heat component (plus some fermented funkiness) that plain ketchup lacks.

I personally find ketchup to be about the only sauce that is still good in its mass-produced form, which is part of why I enjoy it on some stuff. When you look at a lot of mass produced, store-bought or fast food sauces like honey mustard, ranch, bbq, special sauce, etc., you'll see that they are all HIGHLY inferior to the quality you'd get from making a sauce yourself or getting at a real restaurant. You'd be surprised how easy it is to whip up the best honey mustard or ranch that you've ever tasted in like ten minutes easily at home. However, ketchup seems to be about the only mass-produced sauce that I think is actually pretty good. Could it be better if made from scratch? Yeah, probably so. To be fair, there are also differences between the ketchup brands themselves in terms of taste as well (McDonald's ketchup is by far the best, imo). But that does not mean that classic Heinz or Hunt's ketchup is as bad of a sauce as their non-ketchup cousins like store-bought, mass produced, shelf-stable ranch, bbq, whatever else. Though not my favorite sauce, ketchup is seriously the only sauce in that mass produced category that actually does a good job.
