You're the only video that actually touches fairly on the concept of the water level indicator... good... but still not a complete helpful sequence of watering and waiting... But then I'm not sure if even Keter knows how it works.... judging by their own vague, useless instructions! Their latest design (bought at Costco) is best with 8 soil-filled dips in the soil compartment's bottom, sitting in the reservoir water to wick that water into the main planter soil. SO, THE BIG KETER SECRET, SIMPLY PUT: 1) Water only by pouring into the tapered top of the dual purpose indicator/filler tube, (thereby filling the reservoir underneath). 2) Stop filling when the red portion of the indicator "stem" rises even with the "brim" of the indicator/filler tube (indicating the reservoir is topped up). 3) For the next days the reservoir water will wick up into the soil, automatically irrigating your plants, (and the indicator "plant" slowly drops in its tube). 4) When the indicator plant's top drops flush or slightly below the tube brim (the reservoir is now empty), wait a day or two and then go back to step (1)

Costco sells these in Canada at around $99.00. It is a GREAT product. But WHY or Why wouldn't there be the option of having a protective LID on it that has a hinge like a VegePod system.... ? Then one can plant earlier in the season and it would protect the young seedlings from wind, colder weather .... etc ... I would pay more in a minute for a hinged lid. (and it doesn't even hafta have a hinge.. simply lift off and then put back on at night time ....

Good evening. Thank you for this video. It’s been way more informative than the others I’ve seen. Picked mine up Friday from Home Depot and filled already. The question about the water gauge. How do you know when it’s too much and when to drain? Also, I did fill the reservoir through the gauge to make sure that there is enough water because I may not be able to check daily. Any input? TIA 🙂👍🏾
@1b0bbydigital3 жыл бұрын
Hi Carol, that’s great to hear. How much you water, really depends on your plants needs. The excessive water makes it way down to the bottom reservoir. If that leaf🌱 indicator pokes up. You know you can stop. I would check the soil either with your fingers to see if it’s moist ( top couple of inches) 1x week or you can use a soil moisture meter. If your planter box is in direct sun, then it may need to be watered more often. I would say at least 1x a month, drain your planter or if you notice your soil is keep moist/wet. If too much water, then plants can risk root rot. happy planting 🌱 please subscribe.

I have a question. I added water to my planter box but the water system did not rise. I had to drain the water because I saw that there was a lot. The water stick never went up and remained in place the entire time. Do you think it is defective or have you had similar issues?
@1b0bbydigital3 жыл бұрын
Hi Elaine! Sorry to hear that. It sounds like that foam piece at the bottom of the riser may have come off or that foam piece is getting stuck in that bottom channel. You may want to wiggle it a bit or you may need to remove some soil to try and inspect the riser’s floater. See about the 4:30 minute mark. Happy planting, hope you are getting a head start on the season. Please subscribe for more backyard garden videos.

Hi Eric, I have an issue with my Keter and I hate it! I don't know if it's just me, but the self watering part is useless. There are 4 holes at the bottom of the reservoir, which defeats the purpose of pouring water in there because it just leaks out and does not hold any water. There are 4 holes in each corner. It looks like they need plugs like the main manual plug. I'm baffled. Does your have 4 holes in each corner?
@dorasirakova86354 жыл бұрын
I have the same problem. Why are those holes there?
@1b0bbydigital4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, those holes are for drainage. Open system: If you are placing the planter outside - where it may be exposed to rainfall those holes will allow excess water to drain out preventing root rot. Closed system: If you are placing the planter in a covered (patio) area - there are drainage caps that you need to leave in. see manual Closed vs Open system. Here's a link images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/A1CkTK2MnqS.pdf Hope this helps, let us know how/where you plan on placing your planter.
@1b0bbydigital4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dora, Those holes are for drainage if you are planning on using outside exposed to rainfall (open system). If not, then there are drainage caps you will leave in for a closed system to keep the water in.

@@1b0bbydigital Came to youtube in search of answers for this exact issue. The link you shared is not for the same planter and mine did not come with the drainage plugs, so imagine my surprise when all the water i put in just leaked out... and that makes the little water gauge plastic flower completely useless as well since no water stays in the bottom part. What a stupid design! Why would i need a drainage system on top on the manual drainage system that this thing is specifically designed for and has a little knob that lets me release excess water??? Anyone know where i can get the plugs and how to put the in from the outside since emptying this thing is not optimal.
@myanimals71454 жыл бұрын
Olga Ester Amazon has rubber plugs/stoppers. I was going to buy these and push them in from the inside, but I decide to make my own out of wine corks. I whittled each down in a cone shape (the holes in the planter are 8mm in diameter) starting from about 6mm to plug them up. I have no use for the holes and it should have come with plugs. If water needs to be drained, that’s what the side plug is there for, right? I just finished yesterday and haven’t tested them yet, I was going to water the base too see if it holds. Will let you know.

Not sure if you still monitor this thread but I have a question. Our Potting soil has begun to grow small patches of white mold. It seems the dirt is always moist and we haven't added water in weeks. What did we do wrong?
@1b0bbydigital3 жыл бұрын
Hi Duff, that white mold is prob loving the moist conditions. I’ve googled around and what I’ve read it is harmless to your plants but you can remove the mold and discard it. Afterwards, sprinkle lightly some cinnamon on the soil (a natural fungicide). You may want to drain out the water from the drainage tap on it the side. It may be too much water. Let it dry out until the top 2 inches is dry before adding more water to refill. Hope that helps, let us know how it goes, please consider subscribing. Happy growing 🪴

@1b0bbydigital3 жыл бұрын
👋 Duff , if you can’t drain. You should check to make sure there are drainage holes underneath. If not, you may want to consider drilling 1/4 inch holes at the bottom to allow that extra water to drain. Otherwise, your plants may risk root rot. After adding holes, you can line the bottom with landscape fabric or something to prevent soil from getting out. Hope that helps.

@maryramirez69213 жыл бұрын
I was told to pit small rocks on the green mesh. Is that right?
@1b0bbydigital3 жыл бұрын
👋 Mary, that’s not necessary, you want the potting mix to have contact with the green mesh. The contact will ‘wick’ the water 💦 up into the soil. If you put rocks it will push the water up closer to your roots, you don’t want that - you want water to drain away - that may cause root rot. What are you planting this season? Do you need to periodically drain the reservoir? thanks.
@1b0bbydigital4 жыл бұрын
Hi,yes, I had to drain my planter because the soil was getting too damp. It was causing root rot. I would use that drained water for something else in the garden (it’s rich in nutrients). It really depends on where you place your planter (full sun,shade) - it impacts how fast your plant (transpiration) and soil takes up that water. In my case, my planter is fully shaded, the water wasn’t evaporating or getting used up fast enough.
