What is a ketone?
A ketone is not a fat, carbohydrate, or protein. It has characteristics of both a fat and a carbohydrate, but it's not either. Ketones come from fat, and they are an alternative fuel source. You get ketones by lowering the carbohydrates in your diet, or by reducing your frequency of eating.
That's why I recommend a low carb diet (ketogenic diet) with intermittent fasting. That way, you can maximize your ability to make ketones.
Benefits of ketones:
• Increases oxygen in the body
• Increases energy
• Supports the brain
• Supports the heart
Most of the body tissues can run on ketones, but some parts need glucose. However, you still don't need to consume glucose. Your body can make glucose when it needs to through something called gluconeogenesis.
It takes time to start turning fat into ketones. The time it takes depends on how damaged your pancreas is.
How to get into ketosis:
• Lower your carbs
• Lower your frequency of eating
Why should you do ketosis?
• To lower insulin
High insulin levels cause insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance in behind:
• Pre-diabetes
• Diabetes
• Metabolic syndrome
• High blood pressure
• Fat in the gut area
More benefits of keto and intermittent fasting:
• Reduce fat in the liver
• Improve cognitive performance
• Improve mood
• Decrease blood pressure
• Decrease inflammation
• Improve energy
• Decrease belly fat
• Autophagy
* Your hunger goes away with the keto diet and intermittent fasting.
* Keto and intermittent fasting work best when combined.
* I recommend healthy keto over dirty keto.
* Don't eat unless you're hungry. With healthy keto, you will be full and satisfied.
* Autophagy starts after about 18 hours of fasting.
* When fasting drink fluids, take electrolytes and B vitamins, and take sea salt.
Common foods to focus on while on the ketogenic diet plan:
• Pasture-raised eggs
• Shellfish
• Fish
• Sardines
• Organic meats
• Cheese
• Olives
• Avocados
• Veggies
• Nuts
• Seeds

Thanks Dr Berg. I have followed you for a few years. I lost 70 pounds with Keto and IF. Thought it was ok for me to start eating carbs again. I gained 30 pounds back last year. Now I am about to start back on your plan and never stop again. I am now working with a trainer that has told me to eat carbs and eat every two hours. I have gained even more doing this working out 6 days a week. I’m going back to Keto and staying there. Thanks for all you do sir

@@prashanthb6521 wouldn't know how to start a review but I hope this helps At 55 Yo 5'8" and 267 Lbs with what I would say was 65 % body fat in 2016 I was in sad shape and that's after a life of Yo-Yo dieting I was X military paratrooper so trust me I was in shape for almost 6 years in 2016 I found a video on You tube Titled butter makes your pants fall of by Butter Bob Greg.. That opened the door to Keto you should watch it ..first thing I did is knock of the Sugar and sugary drinks also all Alcohol then after 30 days I started removing all the Carbs except for vegetables fresh Blue berry's , Raspberry's , and Black berry's as the only sweets I could have when I craved them at first almost at the end of every meal all my meals with NO snacking where 80% Fat 15% protein and 5% carbs ..lost 60 Lbs in 6 month 100 lbs in just under a year ..The biggest surprise after the remarkably fast weight loss was that in 3 short month I had lost all symptoms of arthritis that had plagued me for over 5 years this is when I woke up that this is much more ten just about loosing fat also be aware that back then I did not know about IF and OMAD ..that I started at the end of my 2nd year and did some experimenting so If I was starting now with all the new info on KZbin it would go so much faster and easier. I'm now at 172 lbs my lowest after 12 month was 160 lbs I had a lot of loose skin and appeared older from the wrinkled skin on the face Today I'm 59 Yo 175 lbs much more muscle and I'm down to about 20 % body fat the loose skin is about 80% gone and I still notice an improvement every month and I have been told quite a few times this past year that I'm looking so much younger I agree. As far as my mental health I can for sure tell that I don't experience brain fog that I did 4 years ago my short term memory still needs to improve quite a bit more, But my long term is some times scary how good it is ..This is long but it would take hours to even start to go into any details " Live your life against the grain and never look back "

Dr. Berg! I just wanted to share with you how your videos have changed my health and life . I was diagnosed with type two diabetes, I already had high blood pressure for yrs and I was over weight. My cholesterol was high and so was my triglycerides. I immediately converted a room in my home to a gym and changed my eating habits i basically was starving eating lots of salads and beans, lentils and a few meats but not many. I did good for a year but couldn’t sustain the lifestyle. I did in that year lose 36 lbs and get my A1C down from 9 to 7 without medication but after the Covid lock down was over and I returned to work and moved my mother in with me who was I’ll all of the exercise and eating heart went out the window. My A1C shot back up I gained about 10lbs back and my glucose and BP were worse than ever. About a month ago I started watching your videos and I transitioned my diet I had some set back and cravings but finally a week ago I was able to start the fasting and I purchased a stationary bike and I filled the fridge with healthy foods from your videos. It’s only been a week but my blood sugar has not gone higher than 175 it remains between 124 and 130 before meals and this morning when I took my blood pressure it was 120 over 79 that was before any medication. I have lost 7 lbs my knee pain and most of my joint pain is gone! I am so excited and feel so much better I was sick every day and beginning to feel hopeless. Thank you so much for your videos I am truly grateful and I know that this is something I can continue to do. I made the pizza yesterday with your cauliflower crust receipt it was delicious. Thank you!

My Dear wonderful Doctor, I have been following the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting since the beginning of June (about 3 months). I used to consume a lot of foods (!) that I thought were "healthy", but I didn't know they were unhealthy until I watched you. I completely abandoned them and changed my diet 100%. I completely abandoned sugar and refined carbohydrates (bread, sweets, fruits, all kinds of bad foods with sugar). I have undergone an incredible transformation in 3 months and I feel really healthy, young, dynamic and happy. My belly has completely disappeared, my body has become very fit and my bad weight has disappeared. Your contribution to this matter is incredible and truly huge. You may not be aware of it, but you have a huge positive impact on many people and you give people very useful information. I thank you very much and I follow you with pleasure. Although I generally follow you on the "Dr Eric Berg Turkish" channel, I also watch and follow your English videos. Of course, my English is not great, I think this is quite obvious and you understand :) I hope I didn't make any funny mistakes in my words or sentences while writing in English :) I personally would like to thank you very much for the wonderful information you provide to people, regardless of the language. I respect you very much and I'm glad I discovered you on KZbin. Best regards from Istanbul...

It’s amazing how eating potassium and creating health is much more effective for weight loss than merely omitting sugar. So it’s pro active rather than passive ketosis. Not starving..but high potassium. Benefits of Potassium extend to the heart and mood. It certainly slims me down more than non Veg keto

Been doing keto for 5 months, im pre-diabetic & have inflammatory arthritis. I started at 325 pounds, right now i'm at 260 pounds. I just eat boiled eggs with salt & pepper, bacon and beef, no sugar or carb intake at all, i just drink only water and sometimes i drink a lot of water in a day, and i only eat dinner so i'm also unintentionally intermittent fasting as well. Don't know if i'm really doing keto correctly, but i am losing a lot of weight. Yesterday was my first day on keto where i didn't even get hungry and didn't eat anything, but today i was hungry and had 2 meals of beef, 1 of those 2 beef meals was with a whole raw onion (i really miss onions, tomatoes, lettuce - i love salads but wasn't losing weight on them) but i usually only eat once a day which is dinner before i go to bed. Going to probably eat a delicious chicken salad tomorrow night for dinner now that i just reminded myself of salads, which i know i shouldn't 🤦

I have to thank you greatly because you made me do low carb diet and combined with your valuable information, daily exercising outside and daily cold showers (Wim Hof) I am feeling A LOT better, within short time. I think it's mostly because I have GI issues that are better now, probably because of bad gut microbiota that heavily depended on my former high carb / sugar intake. So yeah, this is fantastic

My own diet journey of some six months has been steadily reducing carbs. Every time I've found a new way to do that I saw benefits. We all grew up chowing down on sugars and carbs. It is no small thing to change those habits. First get rid of the sugar (fruit sugar especially) then rachet down the carbs, rachet up the vegetables, quality protein, quality oils. This worked for me. I'm now putting the squeeze on time between first and last meal of the day. Thank you Dr Berg.

Dr. Berg, I want to say THANK YOU! I am on my 4th day of Keto diet and intermittent fasting. I have one issue with this plan because it works beyond my imagination. I lost 3.4 lb and 1.5 to 2 cm around my waist after only 3 days. Why is this a problem? I don't want to lose weight. I only want to lose stubborn fat around my waist and thighs. I am healthy and lean and can't afford losing another pound. I have to increase from 2 meals to 3 meals on some day moving forward, so I don't lose more weight. I am very happy with the result that I could not get despite I have been excercising regularly and eating healthy all these years. I didn't change much in my diet except increased more green veggies in each meal now and stop snacking fruits and high protein bar that I made. The main change for me is to reduce the number of times I eat daily. I can't believe how simple it is and it works beautifully. For those of you who read this and you need to get rid off stubborn fat in the lower belly, I hope this inspires you.

I have done IF without lowering my carbs which might differ from this. But I lost weight initially but once my body adapted to it I stagnated (Meaing while I didn't gain weight again, I also didn't loose weight anymore). I expect this part to be different with doing Keto as well since you take in alot less calories and therefore your body has to burn your own fat. However I just want to warn people that you will probably be Hangry until you have lunch. (Meaning easily agitated because you will probably be hungry) It's not as bad though once you are aware of it. Really good videos, I am certain it helps alot of people if they can stick with it since not eating carbs and eating less frequent is a sure fire way to burn fat since you are basically systematically starving yourself in a more healthy manner (Since you have a calory deficit but not a nutrition deficit). I haven't tried this program yet but I am not sure if this is a good idea longterm. I would probably do something like this until I gained the body shape I want and then gradually increase carbs to the point where I don't loose more weight but also not gain weight again.

I have a question: I’m new with Keto dieting, & I put MCT oil & grassfed butter in my coffee/tea first thing in the morning. If I’m starting the intermittent fasting, should I drink the tea/coffee plain in the mornings then add the oil & butter at lunch with my first meal? Yes, Dr Berg is the absolute best. I’m a retired RN & I avoid the medical field as much as possible, so when I have a medical problem, I first listen to Dr Berg. He’s the smartest man I know! Thank you Dr Berg!

I’ve lost 15 pounds on keto and IF so far. I want to lose 5-8 more pounds. I never thought I’d be able to go 18 hours without eating, but I’ve done it. I eat at 12 and 6. It really works. I haven’t even exercised. I want to get to my desired weight first then do some light to moderate exercise. I’m learning more and more by watching your videos.

When you're on a limited income, for some folks, 'dirty keto' is the ONLY option. Better than not doing it at all and just conceding to societies way of eating on a budget and going down to the local fast food joint and getting whatever sludge they offer. Focusing on low carbs is a good start for anyone regardless of whether it's dirty or not. :-)

I have started to make small changes to my lifestyle to get me healthier and fitter. Most importantly, I just want to feel better about myself. I just dont know how to begin this keto and intermittent fasting thing. I've been subbed to your channel for a few years now, and the only person I could think of for starting KETO - was you. Shall be tuning it, and just wanted to thank you for being so consistent with your channel, advice and information all this time.

I started IF 10 weeks ago with little information, I am a T2 diabetic with inflammatory bowel disease IBD/UC. I started because of my doctor wanting to put me on cholesterol medication, my HDL number where down 2 digits. I did research on them to find I could not take a chance on take them. I had shoulder surgery mid September and was dealing with muscle pain, after 40 days of physical therapy before and after surgery I still have scarification at the incision site. So statins were out of the question. In my research on cholesterol i decided to focus on building my HDL numbers to naturally reduce my bad cholesterol. With out bloodwork I can't tell if IF is helping with my HDL numbers. But because I'm a diabetic I seen my fasting glucose numbers drop, and I lost 3 inches of my ribcage. Had to go shopping for new under garments. I fast 16 hrs and eat from 11am to 7pm with two larger meals and sometimes a snack. I have never been one to eat until the afternoon so for me it was cutting my time back at night. Because I was eating so late and snacking before bed, because that what diabetic education classes taught me, to prevent a low whilr sleeping, when I was first diagnosed i dropped a lot of weight due to medication, but after 1 year started gain weight even more than I started with. I know something was not working, and insulin was my biggest problem. Plus with my IBD/UC food was the enemy. So IF made since to me just to givr my body a break. I had my annual colonoscopy on 11/19/21 and it was perfect, no pulps and my biopsies can back clean even signs of healing, I am in remission. My last scoop, I had high level of information and a precancerous pulp. Now my colonoscopy have been mode out from annual to every two years. I don't know if iy was thanks to IF alone, because in my years of dealing with IBD/UC I have changed the way I eat. More herbal teas, healthy fats and greens. I never followed a keto diet 100% but know carbs equals hight glucose levels. So low carb intake is installed in me. I also tossed the vegetables oil, minus EVO and coconut oils, I make my own ACV I use it to condition my hair, after my hair falling out due to bad ingredients in so-called highend shampoo that helps whatever your hair issues is, there is no place for formaldehyde in products that we use on our bodies. So it's 1 teaspoon of baking soda a few squirts of natural coconut liquid soap in a recycled water bottle, same for conditioner 2 tablespoons ACV cap bottles, in shower wet hair add water to DIY shampoo and shake pour over hair and gently wash hair, same for conditioner add warm water to ACV shake pour over hair and let sit a few rinse. My hair is finally growing back after 6mos. Health equals balance and we must remove the toxicity from our environment this includes what we put on and in our bodies, and don't forget the equipment with cook with and drink out of... aluminum, non stick and plastic are toxic. Love the information in these videos thank you for the time you spent making them... so helpful.

I was in Ketosis quite strongly (keto strips) for 2 years and I still put on weight. My mistake was eating too much fat and eating too often. I enjoyed the yummy healthy food I was eating but I was slowly gaining kilos. I guess I never gave my body a chance to use it's own fat reserves. Now I just eat one big healthy meal a night (meat n greens) and I'm losing weight fast (and yes I'm in ketosis).

I've been following Dr. Berg's diet for the past 3 years, as well as intermittent fasting with a 6 hour eating window. My cholesterol is now 347. I just had a colonoscopy and I now have diverticulitis, something I didn't have 3 years ago(caused from eating too much fat). I followed his dietary suggestions because there is a lot of diabetes in my family. But Keto is NOT healthy for everyone. Be careful out there because this Keto craze can do damage to your body if you don't have the APOE2 gene. Watch out if you have the APOE4 gene, this is not a good diet for you..
