Dr. Benjamin Bikman. He is a biomedical scientist, professor, and expert on insulin resistance.
Dr. Benjamin Bikman studies diabetes and obesity, and much of what he focuses on is a seemingly obscure condition called insulin resistance. But it's, in fact, not very obscure at all.
What is insulin resistance? Why did Dr. Benjamin Bikman devote his career to studying something like this? Well, insulin resistance is essentially two things. First of all, some cells in your body aren't responding very well to the hormone insulin. Second, you have more insulin than you did before, a condition called hyperinsulinemia.
Dr. Bikman's research focus is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that mediate the disruption that causes and accompanies metabolic disorders, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dementia. Driven by his academic training (Ph.D. in Bioenergetics and postdoctoral fellowship with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders), he is currently exploring the different roles of insulin and ketones as critical drivers of metabolic function. He frequently publishes his research in peer-reviewed journals and presents at international science meetings.

Ever heard of the "China Study "...... Based on the results from the China Study, which is one of the most comprehensive studies done in nutritional science, they explain the benefits of a whole food diet. Whole food diets can prevent, and even reverse disease, and consuming animal protein like meat and dairy, can harm our health.

In 2003 my medical practice partner got very angry regarding me diagnosing Metabolic Syndrome. She told me that did not exist, you cannot test for it and it was a trash can diagnosis. When I explained to her what the cluster of symptoms were and the dire implications of it, she scoffed and told me I didnt know what the hell I was talking about!! We parted ways a few months later and I continued to research, learn and very successfully treat it and completely reverse my T2D patients. It was very frustrating in the beginning when metabolic syndrome first came into our zeitgeist. Sadly now 22 years later, there are still providers who refuse to accept how to recognize and properly treat these metabolic disorders. So thanks for all you do to educate the public so they can intelligently challenge their doctors and get proper treatment and eat properly.

In my post here, I want to comment on the caption, so please remember that is my focus: I love listening to Dr. Bikman. (Period.) But I watched (and listened carefully) to this entire video looking for the information that the caption promised, which was tauted as the focus, and at the end, still didn’t have a clear answer. (I think it may have been touched on for about 10 sec.) When a video gives a caption that is quite inaccurate, that’s my definition of clickbait. With respect, please create captions that accurately capture the most important points of your video. I would have watched regardless, but I don’t like feeling like I’ve been snookered at the end.

What you DON'T eat is more important than particulars (as everybody is different some will not do well on "Keto" carnivore thing) it's the "ultraprocessed" foods: chips/snack foods all the stuff in plastic bags (I call it "poison wrapped in poison") that is making people fat and killing them. I've done something similar, lost 13kg (29lb) in 3 months, but without the walking and cycling since I'm disabled. I've been doing 20 mins of stretching and strength training using 3kg weights and resistance bands in the morning and evening. I changed to a wholefoods diet, low carb, high protein, no refined sugars, starches, or seed oils, and doing at least 16:8 intermittent fasting, often 18:6 because I get busy.

I personally tried both methods of weight loss..... caloric restriction and lowering insulin spikes, here are my results.... Caloric restriction -From 2014 to 2018, loss 80+lbs from 250+lb to 170lb (yet never stopped eating carbs, seed oils and continued with frequent daily meals) By summer of 2023 regained weight and then some to 262lb! In December 2023 started IF and part time carnivore (after watching Dr Fung video), now in May 2024, in just 5 months, I am down 36lb, without counting calories or even trying like I did many years ago, my conclusion is the following: Fasting and eating nutritient dense foods will allow the human body to naturally correct the internal health issues within us all, no need to workout and "burn off" the calories (like I personally did years ago), wish I knew this years ago, I probably would not have regained all of that weight back.... Currently I am a OMAD, a full-time carnivore, light dumbbell workout 2x a week, 4 mile walks 2x a week, that's it, nothing else. (No more excessive crazy madman workouts like years before)

It's interesting when you look at photos from the 50's and 60's of people who ate lots of carbs, but their fats came more from animal sources. The majority were slender. They also were likely more active throughout the day. I grew up in the 70's and I was a chubby kid. My parents were also overweight. I remember we ate a lot of margarine, instead of butter. We also ate lots of sweets.

I tried to read the gist from the transcript but there were so many run-on and incomplete sentences that reading it was harder than listening to it. I haven’t had seed oils in the house in nearly 2 decades, but I got a lot of them unwittingly by eating a lot in restaurants from 2020-halfway through 2023. I started cooking again in October ‘23 and consume an animal-based low carb diet. Have lost minimal weight and no belly fat. The only thing that ever made me lose belly fat was my 4 months on semaglutide. But the side effects became literally intolerable. Of course I gained it all back. I’m experimenting with a variation on a fasting schedule suggested by Ben Azadi (Who can eat 3 meals in a 6-hr eating window? Not I.). So in my third week I’m derailed by some afternoon classes, but I’m sure that sort of disruption will be rare. My body seems to be very good at staying at the same weight no matter what I do….

If you are eating less food , you are triggering insulin less by just having less. So it's not incompatible that people counting calories would lose weight without "Lowering carbs' because they effectively do Lower carbs by eating fewer carbs as calories, .. along with everything else. The ratio may be different but the total amount is still less than before. and if they keep doing it it stays off.

Simplest? Fast for a few days. Easier to do? Cut carbs (sweet or starchy foods) to very little or none. Avoid any "vegetable" oils (seed oils: sunflower oil, safflower oil, canola oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil, etc) and avoid ultra-processed food. Eat meat (and don'tbe afraid of the natural fat that comes with it), and if you need vegetables, focus on green leafy vegetables, avoiding starchy vegetables like potatoes, corn and legumes. Avoid grains altogether (bread, cereal, etc). Dont be afraid of butter, beef tallow, pork lard or other animal fats. Dont be afraid of salt (salt to taste unless you have some medical reason). That should get you started. Women need to tweak the quantities differently from men, so look up videos with specifics.

I don't believe it is capitalism. There are plenty of capitalist countries in the world without the obesity problems of the US or the way the UK is going. It's a failure of educating people from birth about healthy living and providing incentives and opportunities for people to easily make healthy choices. If the only shops within 3 miles are convenience stores or gas stations, and the only food outlets are fast food, it doesn't matter how prosperous a country is, the people living in those areas cannot easily make reasonable food choices. A prosperous capitalist society could also invest in bike lanes in cities and promote cycling for example... give free bikes to school kids. If capitalist societies are so rich we can sit on our ass and do nothing, they can afford to invest in the health of the population.

4 organs that are potential starting origins of insulin resistance. i have two other mechanisms: * damaged L-cells in the gut, harmed by a destroyed gut microbiome (bad artificial sweeteners, antibiotics). that lowers GLP-1, PYY, CCK output which drives the production of glucagon ==> gluconeogenesis. * high cortisol driving gluconeogenesis possible solutions - or at least things to make it better: 4cl ACV + 3g glutamine + 400ml water first thing in the morning and in the evening. maybe a bit of vitamin C in the morning. what does it do: * the ACV (not pasteurized!) could be good for our gut microbiome * the ACV contains a few percent SCFAs which fuel the L-cells and that boosts GLP-1 production * glutamine fuels the gut and helps to repair the L-cells and increases GLP-1 production * glutamine reduces cortisol * vitamin C reduces cortisol cortisol is highest in the morning and drives gluconeogenesis. so, getting that down lowers insulin resistance. long term taking care of the gut health while cutting out processed carbs is absolutely key!! i had a huge success with keto for one and a half year but then because of an ear infection and gut infection, the doctors pumped me full of antibiotics. and after that, keto did not work anymore. ( because even on keto you can have high blood sugar when your L-cells are damaged )

@nociable
@nociable 4 ай бұрын
One way to get it under control is intermittent fasting. Start 16/8. Avoid carbs, increase protein, hydrate with electrolytes and increase the fasting window incrementally, by slowly going to autophagy (between 16-18 hours) when the fat burning goes in overdrive and you will lose inches and definitely weight. Need to start toning exercises because you could have loose skin. Insuline resistance will be under control, will have tons of energy, clear head and will feel amazing. Just be VERY STRONG during the first two weeks-DON’T GIVE UP!

Also, when you consider the benefits, right there there’s the biggest motivation you are going to need for the first steps. Once you see results, the motivation will take care of itself. I thought I would never be able to do it as when my blood sugar goes low, I become someone I don’t like at all, but believe me when I say, if I did it, anyone can do it. Just my two cents anyway..

I love the keto diet for it's ingredients recommended. This is exactly everything I love too eat, low carb - healthy fats and proteins, works for me perfectly. But fasting is not for me. I don't mind it personally but it seems like it's not the best for my body and I go into hypoglycemia way too often. Eating small meals/ snacks every 3 hours is what makes me feel best. Often it's a piece of cheese, an avocado, some nuts, an apple, nothing loaded with sugar but I definitely need to eat something. I have no weight to lose. I'm pretty active, go to the gym, so yeah I totally understand general advice is for general group of people but I really appreciate you talking about those who don't necessarily need to fast ( I also found out I had Gilbert syndrome and fasting is not recommended).

That's an understatement. In an interview with Andrew Huberman, Robert Lustig made a factual statement that sugar (and fructose) isn't good for you. This is common knowledge and everyone and their grandmother knows this. Layne Norton, trying to capitalize on the interview to farm content, tried to "debunk" this statement by citing a study that stated that "fructose from sources such as sucrose and cereal is linked with decreased mortality" in his "debunking" video. I'm not kidding. He actually did this. I had to replay that section of the video several times because I didn't think even Layne Norton was that dumb. It makes me question the value of his Phd.

The mechanism of no sugar sweeteners as I have read is the body responds to the taste and produces insulin, it doesn’t anticipates fake sweetener. Much like it excretes enzymes for digestion when it smells food, it also anticipates certain types of nutrients and responds. So much information and so much possibility and I suppose more will be figured out as we go along

With regards to eating the fish instead of fish oil - it's important to note that farmed fish has fairly high omega-6 content, because it's fed soy and corn just like livestock. For example, farmed salmon has about 0.9g of linoleic acid for 0.8g of EPA and 1.1g of DHA per 100g, so in high amounts it will probably not be very beneficial. Wild salmon has about 4x less linoleic acid and it is therefore less of a concern. As conversion of ALA into EPA and DHA - it's important to note that this pathway can be blocked by excessive linoleic acid, so if you have too much seed oils in your diet, consuming ALA may still leave you deficient in DHA and EPA.
