Inserts can also be used as an audio output Jack to record to an interface or tape machine by using the 1/2 click method (pushing a T/S instrument cable 1/2 click into the insert Jack, and then into the interface) I find this to be a great way of recording because it’s pre-fader, and pure un colored audio.

So I can use these inserts as outputs right? Can you please send me a link with the right type of cables? Thanks a lot!!!
@I-AlphaLogic-I3 ай бұрын
@@konstantinoschatzistamatak277 Two type of cable interfaces - look them up as youtube may delete the comment if including external links... See below.. 1. TS (short for TIP. SLEEVE.) 2. TRS (short for TIP. RING. SLEEVE.) 3. TRRS (short for Tip. Ring, Ring, Sleeve) - not really found on pro audio gear as its intended for consumer devices that have stereo out and microphone (e.g., Phones, PC's, etc.). I'm not going to cover this... Using TS versus TRS Cables... 1a. Use a "TS to TS" cable and go 1 click (or as Jim stated, a 1/2 click in) to the mixers insert port to get a Mono signal (not stereo) out of the channel AND with NO Interruption to the audio signals path through the mixer channel strip. 1b. Use the same "TS to TS" cable and go 2 click (i.e. completely inserted) to the mixers insert port to get a Mono signal (not stereo) out of the channel BUT with Interruption to the audio signals path through the mixer channel strip. No signal will reach the associate channels fader. 2a. Use a "TRS to TS/TS" cable to the mixers insert port to get a Mono signal (not stereo) out of the channel - the Tip of the TRS side will send to the tip of one of the TS connectors (usually labeled TIP) AND the Ring section of the TRS side will return the processed signal in to the Mixer coming from the Tip of the second TS connector (usually labeled RING). 2b. Use a "TRS to TRS" cable to the mixers insert port to get a Mono signal (not stereo) out of the channel to an audio processor using a single dedicated IN/OUT - The Tip of the TRS at the mixer will send to the tip of the TRS connector at the associate audio processing device. - The Ring section of the TRS at the Mixer will return the processed signal coming from the Ring of the TRS connector associated audio processing device.

Really love the clarity of your videos! Very few people explain these things thoroughly and you do that amazingly, thank you! You're also the reason why I bought the Mackie Profx10v3! Great mixer! Two years in however I'm still baffled with how to use FX SEND! In particular I am confused on how to connect a (stereo out) effect pedal such as a reverb or delay to the board (say for my voice) and how to get the right 'blend' out? The user manual is super cryptic about it. Thank you in advance! 🙏

I'm digging your instructional videos and learning a lot. The only topic I would love to see covered is the Foot Switch. Some mixers have them and I have no idea what they are for and how they are used. I assume its for a stomp pedal, but does it then go to each individual channel and add that to the whole mix or is it routable?
@kettnercreative Жыл бұрын
Good idea, I’ll make a video on it

PEDALS MOVE THE EFFECTS ,UP AND DOWN TO EACH SOUND BEING USED ,DEPENDING ON WHAT THE UNIT HAS.REVERB DISTORTION ETC. THE FOOT SWITCH IS USED TO CHANGE EFFECTS BY FOOT INSTEAD OF YOU BENDING DOWN AND MOVING THE PEDAL BY HAND

Great vid! This is the first one I watched that made sense! Question: using the mixer you are using for this demo, how would you get the compressor to be more like a "send" rather than an insert? Would love to use a reverb and be able to send any channel to the reverb using the FX send. I have a Mackie ProFX16v3. Similar to the mixer you demo'd with slightly more inputs but that's about it. Thank you again!

Great video. When would you use an outboard compressor, for live shows or just home recording?
@kettnercreative Жыл бұрын
Both. It's very common to use an outboard compressor on drums and vocals in a live environment.
@WARCRADIONETWORK4 ай бұрын
I do it for home recording ,but you can do bot!!!!h but remember!!!! live guitarists use their pedals,,,,,,,for effects ,reverb ,distortion ,their own sound and effects, and screw up the levels and sounds your trying to compress ,, just use it on drums and things that are not using pedals!

What is the difference between connecting outboard gear via insert and connecting via line in? My setup: Mic to tube preamp via XLR Preamp to comp XLR channel 1 Compressor to eq via XLR channel 1 Eq to UMC404HD interface via XLR channel 1 Interface to Mac I just am confused on the difference. I also have insert jacks on the back of my interface for each channel. What is the difference in using them, what could they be used for in my situation, and would you change anything? Thanks for your informative video!!

So, is the mnemonic "red, ring, right, return"? ("right" because if you're splitting stereo to mono, red is usually the original "right" channel?) 😄
@JuanUys5 ай бұрын
BTW, I'd also like to see a video on putting a stereo instrument (e.g. synth) through a stereo outboard FX unit (like reverb), e.g. either using 2 mono mixer channels and their inserts, or a stereo mixer channel with aux or inserts on two other mono channels, especially for the case where you only want the effect on one channel (I'm aware FX send tend to apply the FX to all channels or channel groups). (I've not seen inserts on stereo mixer channels). Thanks for the informative video!

When I connect an external reverb unit via INSERT does it override the onboard reverb/effects that my mixer (Yamaha MG166CX) has. And how do I control the external reverb unit's parameters? Do I turn the EFFECT knob on my mixer to 0?
@WARCRADIONETWORK4 ай бұрын
DONT USE THE REVERB ON YOUR MIXER , ITS TOO MUCH ON TOP OF EFFECTS , YOU ALWAYS WANT ONLY ONE CLEAR EFFECT YOU CONTROL BECAUSE YOU WILL DISTORT YOUR SOUND BADLY ,AND IT WILL OVERPOWER THE SOUND TOO MUCH
