This is a whiteboard animation tutorial that demonstrates how to identify the limiting reagent (aka limiting reactant) of a chemical reaction and how to calculate the theoretical yield and percent yield in a limiting reactant stoichiometry problem.
Please support me on Patreon:
/ ketzbook
The limiting reagent (or limiting reactant) is the reactant in a reaction that limits the amount of product that can be made. In order to determine it, you need to calculate the amount of product that each reactant can produce. The reactant that can produce the least amount of product is the limiting reagent, and that least amount of product is the theoretical yield.
In order to determine the limiting reagent and the theoretical yield, you will need to perform multiple stoichiometry calculations (typically at least two grams to grams stoichiometry calculations).
This is the fifth and final tutorial in my stoichiometry series.
My goal is to make chemistry easier ;)

My problem is I have a brilliant Dr. for the lecture portion, then his new TA for the lab portion. One teaches things one way, the other a different way and confuses everyone. I really like the guy, but he does not give you all of the information needed. The good Dr. breaks everything down like this guy. The problem with lab is we are a week or so ahead in lab!

Wow! The AH-HA! moment comes easy with your excellent tutorials! Great job! I have a new TA as my lab instructor and he started us with mid-level calculations while only showing one simple reaction and never even mentioned limiting reagent. Now that I have been fully taught everything, stoichiometry is not such a beast! Keep up the great work.

ID:00404 The limiting reagent is the reactant that limits the amount of reactant being formed. As stated in the example, you must find out how much product each reactant can make and then pick the reactant with the lowest number. This is the limiting reagent because after that amount, no more product can be made.

The theoretical yield is based on the limiting reagent, because the limiting reagent is the reactant that will run out first leaving everything else as excess so this means when you run out of the limiting reagent then you have reached your theoretical yield.
