It takes balls to express anything but heterosexuality in hip hop. You're gonna get hate, but every revolutionary idea scares the close minded initially. Keep it up, mad respect. Phenomenal music and visuals.
@huey62486 жыл бұрын
you have a misconception about hip hop, its zctully really progressive and all the big rappers preach love regardless of gender
@JohnnyFromVirginia6 жыл бұрын
Huey Blue really though? All this stuff came out of 70’s & 80’s gangs - If anyone was getting down on the same set I’m pretty sure those heads were hella quiet, or dealt with if exposed. Once battle rap came about, it became common occurrences to “disrespect a man” by ‘belittling’ him to being a girl, a homosexual or having his manhood taken away. By early 90’s f*#}%t was as common a word as “bitch” and both were used in tandem for expression of disrespect towards heterosexual males. It was hard enough to let women get involved in the games cause it was such a masculine machismo focused sport. The equality for all shit didn’t start to truly occur until after Eminem came out. Not because of him directly, no no no, but he did actually perpetuate it by claiming it to be ok to call people that word because it didn’t actually mean “you’re a homosexual” as much as it meant the lowest and most degrading thing you could think of. Of course, this didn’t sit well with the LGBTQ community and as time went on, tolerance for this started to slip and that’s when we started seeing rappers change and new rappers take sides for all levels of equality. Ultimately, rappers preaching equal rights and equal love didn’t start putting that stuff on wax until around the Obama years. Again, not directly related to him specifically, just a timeline of occurrences as it were. A specific reference to when it finally became cool to talk about that sort of thing publicly is directly at the time Macklemore dropped “Same Love” and Katy Perry with “Fireworks”. There were homosexual rappers that were out there during the 90’s (the rapper Caution is the first one to come to mind) and Milkbone came out before Eminem but no one was listening about equal hip-hop opportunities for white people post Vanilla Ice until Slim Shady hit the scene. So peace and one love cats outside of Caution and a few heads weren’t really accepting this equal love shit until those early mid 2000’s.

Dear Kevin, Thank you, I first saw this video in September of 2016, during the MOST painful time in my life. I had just moved from San Francisco to Phoenix. In my new school I was being bullied and had no friends. I was suffering from depression anxiety and OCD. I can not possibly describe how much mtv and Empty helped me through this time in my life ( I know this shit sounds corny but its the truth). When I would listen to your and Brockhampton’s music it would lift me up from these anxiety filled times and make my life so much easier. Thank you so much you have no idea how much you have helped me.

My best friend joby showed me this song our freshman year. He passed away a few years ago and it still has had the biggest effect on my life. He transcended gender norms and put a smile on the face of everyone he was around. I find the effect of brockhamton or “Kevin abstract” has a similar effect. It would mean more then you could possibly know if you named a song “joby”. He never got a funeral service or any type of ceremony that would lay him to rest. I’ve done a personal service but am afraid it isn’t enough. Having a song about him by a group that he could feel truly represented by is the best way I could think of. Please consider this genuine proposition. With all love -levi

As a bisexual male who is working on music and hoping to release some soon, I look up to Kevin so much. It's hard to rap about anything other than straight relationships/sex etc. due to the hate I know I'll get and him doing this is not only very brave but also encouraging, keep it up Kevin.

here in 2020. This is so crazy to me how American Boyfriend is nearly four years old. so much has happened between that time. I really am disappointed because I loved brockhampton but they are so problematic and have fell off. I wouldnt take back the time i supported them though. they really did bring me happiness because at 11 years old I would play this song nonstop in 2016. i havent grown up much.. because im still not that old yet, but i miss my past self and this era in general.

REPOST:"It’s hard being a homosexual rapper when everyone else is out here rapping about gang-banging, but this just shows how fearless Kevin Abstract really is, by making this art, he sets an example for other rappers that are artists in there own way." --- Thanks MT amg for making this statement!!
