Kevin Ayers had one the best (very British of course) voices ever.

Kevin es muy musical...es dios. Por millas muy superior a tantos interpretes. Gracias por hacer de tu música el soundtrack de mi vida.

Robert Wyatt sang back up vocal on the studio version of Hymn for the Banamour LP. He is here in the studio for this session too along with Lol Coxhill and David Bedford for the rather less catchy piece ‘improvisation’. Some people have commented that Kevin Ayers didn't really like improvisation stuff and even didn't want to be in Soft Machine however, I have read interviews where he clearly looked back at the Soft Machine era with fondness. He remained close friends with Robert Wyatt and Mike Ratledge who guested on many of his LPs as well as with Daevid Allen with whom he teamed up with briefly in Gong. He was essentially a solo artist and preferred song structures, but he had other aspects and he craved being in a band situation. This would explain why he formed 'The Whole World' which was clearly far more than just a vehicle for performing his solo material live.

@Syd McCreath I don't think that is correct - Kevin's second 'solo' LP was 'Shooting At The Moon' credited to 'Kevin Ayers and The Whole World'

God he's singing about me. 😁 We are rotting here in our own heads trying to escape from ourselves. Wishing to disappear off the grid Like Bob Marley sang. You can't run away from yourself. No wonder Kevin preferenced to sit under a coconut tree drinking sky wine 😎 This has to be the best two chord song ever written. They can play this at my funeral.

A Stellar talent was Ayers, I think non-musical distractions and a casual approach to a music career meant he was never going to be a Brian Ferry or Rod Stewart type of rock star.

I saw him in London some years ago, 15+ I'd say, and when he came on he was so drunk he could barely function. The band struggled on bravely but about 20 minutes in they literally had to carry him off stage! They got him back on half an hour later, having filled him with coffee, or something stronger and he managed to get through it bless him. A very odd night indeed.

@@michaeldherbage9948I saw him in Liverpool similar time ago. I hour late on stage, didn’t seem drunk. But not a great vibe. Jaded and burnt out sadly.

Although his best songs had great melodies, I could never see him being big in the charts. Always on the fringes I feel.
