Imagine you get up before the sun rises, load up and head west in a wagon train. If things go well you would have made 10 maybe 15 miles before camping for the night. Imagine doing this day after day for 6 months or more. All this on a promise of a better life while never knowing what is just over the next rise. We are lucky. We get a 2-3 hour glimpse into what life like that could be like while sitting in a chair in a theater. Going to see Horizon this weekend.

There was a recent Vanity interview of Costner on KZbin. I've saved this quote from him on describing some of the characters he played. It went something like this: "We don't have to win in order to be respected. We just have to be true to ourselves." Great movies.

But I know you have a lot to do before Friday. I love you …

I went see the first one opening weekend. I am absolutely mesmerized by that world Costner created, for many reasons. I grew up in China, but live in the west now where the story of the Horizon takes place. Honestly I didn’t like it here the first few years I lived here, but I have grown to absolutely fall in love with the west. I love the sun, the mountains, the freedom, the earth, and the people here. I saw a lot of where all of this came from in the Horizon. One of the things I really liked was that though filled with highly staked emotions from characters’ perspectives, there is little to none condemnation and accusation to any particular person or group simply for the sake of caricaturizing them. There is plenty of abhorrent and abominable actions taken by nearly all characters in the movie, and they were shown to be evil. But there is an organic way of showing glistening humanity in dire and extreme situations like which was shown in the movie. I guess the point is that I love the tenderness on show from Kevin Costner. I am saddened that the second one is pulled from theaters and the rest are in danger of not even being made. But I do think that sometimes good stuff is not appreciated by the majority, and that is ok.

My only complaint with Rich's show and this goes out to other talk show hosts. Id tell them to please watch other interviews Kevin has done. That way you are not asking the same questions over and over. It has to drive Kevin nuts. It's always the same four movie's. The man has a huge catalog of great films that nobody ever asks him about. Revenge, Fandango, McFarland USA, Mr Brooks. Just to name a few. I get it that its a sports themed show, but Rich doesn't seem to have a problem talking about non-sports themed films. Costner fans already know the answers to so many questions he is asked, try digging deeper in his film catalog.

After seeing the lackluster opening weekend numbers for Horizon I can tell you why. Kevin was part of the most popular show on TV, Yellowstone. Everyone like myself loved that show. I was constantly checking to see when the newest season would come out. Until finally, it's reported that Kevin isn't going to do another season. It may have been his divorce, not getting along with Taylor, and/or scheduling conflicts. Here's the thing, it doesn't really matter to the average viewer. He walked away from something people desperately wanted to see, an ending to his character John Dutton. We all needed that closure to move on to the next thing. By not giving that to us, no matter which reason, we were all robbed of all the seasons we had previously watched. That impact is being felt in the theaters with Horizon. Had Kevin finished out Yellowstone I have no doubt Horizon would be a hit right now. But it isn't. It isn't because why would we, the viewer, give him our loyalty again when he didn't finish what he started with Yellowstone? The answer is we won't. Kevin Costner is one of the greatest actors of my lifetime. It's really sad that what people like me will remember is he didn't fulfill his end of the deal finishing Yellowstone. When people invest that much time and emotion into a show, only for him not to finish it, those emotions turn negatively. Which is why I can say, I won't be watching any more of his films. Human beings can be petty and spiteful. Unfortunately that's where I'm at. I'm guessing I'm not alone.
