About 10-15 years ago I was working in midtown LA and my young boss, a Texas transplant, was looking for a black comedy club to hang out in. We found a place on the west side, next to Roscoe's Chicken and waffles. I went in a few times on Monday open mike nights and occasionally I'd bring a guest on Saturdays. Every time I went there was this young brother who was the MC. He didn't tell jokes, he told stories about life. No matter how good or bad the lineup was, he was supportive of the comics. On two occasions we connected - one night he and a friend stayed with me after the show and made sure I got to my car safely. The next time, I brought a relative and he chatted us up for a while. He's a truly sweet guy who really seems to love people. Only years later did I recognize him as Kevin Hart.

@@jasonmason6910 I grew up in a place where there were not a lot of options there for me creatively. I had a talent for singing and writing and it was either LA or NY at that time. I wound up working across many creative disciplines besides music, including film, tv and classical theatre. Like anything, it's a who-you-know business - I was referred by an academic to her niece who is an actress who had a friend, etc. etc. It isn't always a great money-making career but there can be a lot of perks and freebies to concerts, events, movies, etc. It depends on your skillset if it is right for you. As they say, find your bliss and follow it.
