I have been waiting for you to react to this! And you did not disappoint. Kevin is truly an awesome talent and you were the first one that was able to intelligently explain his equipment being used and give a better idea of what he was doing on the technical front. Kevin is classically trained in piano, saxaphone, and cello. He performed at Carnegie Hall twice, long before Pentatonix ever heard of him. He has a pre-med degree from Yale; he speaks five languages, including Mandarin; he sings beautifully; he's one of the best beatboxers in the world; and, oh yes, he's a nice guy, a man of faith who believes in freedom of conscience for *everyone,* whether he agrees with them or not. And he has a great laugh. In addition to talent levels that are off the charts, Pentatonix has incredible luck. If you were to go on KZbin, back when it was just beginning to be a thing, and type in "beatboxer," would you expect to find someone like Kevin? I wouldn't. But that's exactly who Pentatonix found, and he was and is the perfect fit for them.

Kevin brings gear along on tour to work on ideas he has when on the road for compositions. We see him sitting down with people at "boards" and try to tell us what he's working on and hashing out with these people he says are just so brilliant and he launch is into descriptions of new hardware and programs and technical stuff and so far it's all gone "woosh!".. right over my head! You broke it down so well that I finally have a little bit of an understanding about what in the world is going on! This is the most informative and comprehensive reaction I have seen to this performance and I thank you so so much for all of your knowledge that you shared! Kevin almost always has his name on credits for writing pentatonix's original numbers.. he partners with several of the members whereas they don't always partner with each other. He is clearly very interested in composition and arrangements and he's a wonderful Lyricist as is Kirstie and I don't understand why his original work doesn't get more recognition. You'd think it would since everybody raves about how brilliant Kevin is? I'm just floored by how many areas Kevin is talented in! Thank you so much! 😊

Unfortunately with art, as in many things, genius talent and "monitization potential" aren't always the same thing. I don't know what's holding him back from doing more of that kind of work, but it certainly isn't his level of talent.

Thank you so much for the clear explanation. As a music teacher I understand what he's doing musically, but not necessarily how he makes it happen technologically, and you helped me understand it a lot better. Just one more question, if I may: when he's walking back from the keyboard to the cello, he takes a moment midway to do something with what seems to be a foot pedal or button. What would that be for?
@DJSwitchPDX
@DJSwitchPDX 3 жыл бұрын
He has an effect pedal for the a cello that made it distorted like a rock guitar (which is what my "Jimi Hendrix" comment was referring to). That foot pedal applies the effects in real-time so none of what you're hearing in the cello part was added in post. It was all live and performed in a single take 🙂

Yeah, I think the first time I saw this technique was a live performance of "Black Horse And The Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstall way back in the early 2000's. It was pretty cool to watch. She had a similar setup, but it was little paddles for her to tap on with her feet.
@DJSwitchPDX
@DJSwitchPDX 3 жыл бұрын
I remember seeing her do something similar for that song. It's an excellent example of live looping! As a matter of fact, most looping equipment is pedal-based, and there's a lot of guitar players like Tunstall that use them. Boss introduced the 505 and 202 so there were options for beatboxers and remix production, but it's all based around the same computer-based techniques that Kevin used here.

Something that I noticed in this video that I don't remember from your previous videos is that you used "umm' frequently to fill pauses. We all do it. When I use to work as a trainer in a call center, I had to point it out when I coached others. I always felt a bit hypocritical doing it considering how often I was told the same thing.
