Mir - Episode 3 - Kvant 1

In this Episode Mir is returned to life by EO-2. Progress flights prepare the station for its first module, Kvant. After losing its connection and nearly colliding with the station, Kvant returns and achieves a soft dock. A trash bag prevents a hard dock and takes an EVA to fix. More Progress flights bring more supplies and the crew installs a third solar panel. Mir becomes the destination for Interkosmos flights before it begins to grow.

A sad footnote to this video: Anatoly Levchenko (the Buran test pilot on Soyuz TM-4) died from a brain tumor less than a year after his flight to Mir at the age of just 47.

Kvant 1 also known as TKS 5 is the first lab module of MIR Russia built 7 more. TKS 6 would become Kvant 2 we will hear about it in the next episode. TKS 7 would become the Kristall TKS 8 would become the Spektr Module TKS 9 would become Priroda Module TKS 10 was suppose to be the Polyus Nuclear Weapons Satellite known as ICON but that project was scrapped and the module was destroyed in a launch accident. TKS 11 would become the Zarya Satellite Module the core of the ISS and TKS 12 would go into storage it would later be revived as Nauka and 13 would be put into storage they might become the Science Power Platform and an unnamed Russian lab module and TKS 14 was never built but it will resume construction once Nauka is launched. Kvant 1 delivered a robotic arm supplied by the Italian Space Agency and ESA it would be used to deliver new modules to the station. This same concept is being used on Nauka which is slated for launch next year. With Kvant 1 delivered Kvant 2 was launched we will hear about it in the next episode.
