One error I noticed- at around 5:40 you mentioned how the psychics “couldn’t fight back against the human military forces” bc they couldn’t harm other humans. But that’s actually not true. In the beginning they were perfectly capable of harming both normal human and other PK users. It wasn’t until long after the war that this changed. Their society was super unstable bc just one unstable PK users could threaten their entire society. The queerats were developed as a consequence of PK users first deciding that they would alter their OWN genes to make it so that they couldn’t harm each other (and other small changes but). But they knew that if they made it so they couldn’t harm each other, then they also wouldn’t be able to harm normal humans- which would make them very vulnerable. That is why they altered the normal humans and made them into queerats. Hope this made sense!
@kered133 жыл бұрын
Additionally, at the time that the psychic humans modified the non-psychic humans, the non-psychic humans already lived effectively as slaves to the psychic humans. The psychic humans wanted to stabilize their own society by introducing death feedback, but did not want to give up their position of power over the non-psychic humans. That's why it was necessary for them to transform non-psychic humans into monster rats.

Gotta comment because I really hate the translation “queer rats”. The Japanese term is bakenezumi, the combination of the words bakemono and nezumi. Monster rats are what they’re being called. @AppleBS113 жыл бұрын
Watched it 6 times. Once per year. Each time I learn something new. It was only the last time that I realised none of the plot would have happened if Saki is not chosen by Tomiko to be the leader. Saki would be "erased" by the cats before she enter the middle school. Minoshiro Modoki would never been opened. The group would never seek the truth. Shun would not die because Saki taught him the secret of the power. Mamoru, the weakest chain, would not break. Maria, my favorite girl, would not have to run away with Mamoru. Akki would not be born. Giant Hornets colony and others would not be defeated by Robber Fly Squealer would never gain enough power to invade the village. And all those villagers would not have died. Kaburagi would not be killed by Akki. All these, just so Saki could succeed as the head of Ethics Committee. It has been 2 years since I last watched, so I might get some details wrong.
@ksdtsubfil68403 жыл бұрын
I love your theories, can we keep talking about them? I kind of disagree with your ninth point about Squealer's intent and ability to invade the village. "False Minoshiro" seemed vaguely aware that another "Fiend would likely reappear again in the near future" when Saki and others discovered it. That is kind of a thing they never really explained how the minoshiro knows that, or maybe it theorized it based on the existing statistical data of fiends in the library, I don't know. (Even though Akki was not a fiend, the outcomes were similar) My point is, the existence of Saki being related to the attack on the village seems a bit disconnected to me because, if it is explained that "fiends" are a statistically reoccurring thing, then a fiend will appear whether or not Saki survived the Tainted Cats. I think it is also an issue of HOW Squealer even got access to another False Minoshiro Library, because I think queerats will not have known about the Death Feedback of humans without having ancient knowledge. So, if Squealer can catch a False Minoshiro by himself, that would not depend on the existence of Saki, and they WILL DEFINITELY plan on attacking psychic humans since they discovered the political theory of Democracy. Although, I am aware that these are speculations instead of established facts. I'm just saying that I think Saki is way too disconnected to the larger, societal conflict for her to be the sole cause of the entire thing. I would love to hear more from you, your comment is actually very challenging.

This anime cleverly distracts you from the overarching plot with various, interesting subplots then german suplexes you with a gut wrenching reveal at the end. That ending made me feel powerless and empty, that I'd spend most of the show looking down on the monster rats because of how they treated the humans with Canti only to realize that I, the viewer, am more closer in retrospect to the monster rats that to the humans with Canti. And added to that is that Satoru and Saki still selfishly hope for a better world for their child and stay complicit even knowing this truth. So cruel yet so human, to just choose what is convenient for you. The humans in this show are more like beasts than the actual beasts. It kinda reminds me of the Chimera Ants arc from hxh. Anyway, this is definitely a hidden gem locked away in obscurity yet surpasses the likes of Death Note and Code Geass to be my top anime.

A masterpiece with commentary on humanity and their struggle for power and the injustices that come with it. Though I do have one doubt. Hope someone in the comment section can clarify it. It is explained that humans couldn't defend against fiends or orges because they would die from the death of shame. But my point is, can't they just attack nonetheless? It's quite common for soldiers to sacrifice their lives against and enemy. Even if you are bound to die from the death of shame, if you deliver a fatal wound then one human sacrifice is all it'd take to bring down a fiend. Or is there something else that I missed? Even if there isn't, I don't think an small issue like that and the somewhat average animation quality ruins a story of this caliber. But hope someone can explain that part.
@lustejon4 жыл бұрын
I believe you see what happens when a human tries to use their power to deliberately kill another human right at the end when The fiend is dying. Due to high stress and adrenaline after seeing her plan being successful, Saki suddenly feels a strong chest pain, as if the death of shame is about to kick, since well they were trying to kill another human albeit indirectly. The reality is that, whenever a human is about to kill another human, the death of shame starts to kicks in and physically inhibits the body of the former against doing so.

5:47-7:07 is basically the whole thematic breakdown of the video, other parts being just recapping. Shinsekai Yori despite it's wasted potential is a good anime but as far as the popular "thin line of humans vs monsters" (which I usually love), this anime has to be one of the poorest representations of it. Not only it's very sloppy how we learn that humanity's reign over them is actually this cruel and merciless in the very last episode by simply hearing about it but the fact that they are basing inclusion of other beings based on some chromosomes count instead of sentience only shows that even at the end, that so called revelation didn't learn them a thing about morality.

Why didn't they do the death feedback to all humans...? PK or non-PK humans.
@ksdtsubfil68403 жыл бұрын
I asked that too, but I think Satoru's statement said it all: "They wanted to preserve the higher status of the privileged class." It was established that Hunter-Gatherer Tribes (the non-PK humans) were subservient to Slave Empires the (PK humans). We also know that the Scientist tribes (who were also PK humans) were only able to make the decision to implement Death Feedback AFTER the fall of Slave Empires. So, the explanation would be, scientists didn't want to make an egalitarian, equitable society. They want their psychic powers and have slaves, but they didn't want the slaves to fight back so they turned them into monster rats. They CAN definitely give death feedback to ALL humans… but they didn't. Some messed up stuff.

@@ksdtsubfil6840 Death feedback functions through their own PK, thus can’t applicable to non-PK users. That’s clearly said in the original novel.
@ksdtsubfil68403 жыл бұрын
@@nklmiloq Oh, I did not know that, I never read the novel. Thanks for letting me know. From what I remember in the anime, scientists had to genetically engineer the death feedback into PK users. If that's true, then death feedback is "PK-specific," meaning only when PK is used to harm other humans will it take effect. But then I have to ask (and this is not in the anime OR novel, I think): could it not have been possible for the scientists to genetically engineer death feedback to function based on ALL types of harm against humans? IF death feedback is PK-specific, would it be possible for a PK-human to, say, kill another human with a knife? Smashing their head with a rock? Using weapons of physical assault? I have to check the Minoshiro episode again, but I'm very sure death feedback is genetic, and I highly question of the exclusion of non-PK humans to have death feedback. Thanks for the information, again. I really like this anime.
@ksdtsubfil68403 жыл бұрын
@@nklmiloq Okay, so I checked, it turns out you ARE right. Genes are the code, and PK is the mechanism of death feedback. PK is the mechanism which stops the activity of liver and parathyroid glands. @nklmiloq3 жыл бұрын
@@ksdtsubfil6840 Death feedback is automatic use of your own PK to cause heart attack triggered by accidental or intentional killing by any direct means. You can’t use PK or aggressive attacks to other humans due to another function, but you can still kill them with obscure ways or by accident, while you are going to die due to death feedback if you’re a PK user. Several specific things I don't like about this boring ass show. 1)Saki's sister. We were teased since the beginning that she might have a sibling. Sure enough she did. So what. It's a mystery not needed because they already know that cats killing them children. I mean even Saki didnt confront her parents about it. So why bother with it in the first place. To show the cantus on the mirror? 2)They split up the group then focus on Saki only. On the summer camp arc, Satoru and Saki were together for like a few episodes fighting rats. Then the others show up in the end okay. Like wtf. Half ass explanation is said. So thats it. Hear it and move on? Oh dont forget the last arc where they split up again. And we were "told" not shown about what happened to the other group besides where Saki was in. 3)Inconsistent love story. Saki x Shun. Then after time skip, Shun x Satoru????? Then Saki x Maria??? Wat the actual fuck. Then all of a sudden Shun breaks up with Satoru because "I'm done being your puppet" mystery which turns out to be nothing. Then out of nowhere or because a sadboi is being left out, MariaxMamoru(a background character). 4) Is Kiroumaru bad or good question? He was introduced as a sketchy guy but leaning towards bad because of the stories about loyalty bla blah but then he is good coz he let them go. But then he is bad coz he use drugs. Then he good coz he save Inui. But he might be bad coz Inui thinks Kikoumaru is setting them up. But he good again coz he sacrifice his life. 4) Random psychedelic animation. No point understanding or interpreting them. 5) Strong cantus as kids. Weak cantus as adults. It is what it is coz its for the plot.

Do you-I don't know-prioritize "human" rights over the other? Because the larger conflict comes when we acknowledge that at the cognitive and emotional level psychic humans and monster rats seem to suffer the same. So you cannot say that because psychic humans have greater physical power to commit violence, their rights should be prioritized because that will DEFINITELY justify the "RATMEN UPRISING." They could say, "well, you definitely don't give an absolute fuck about us so why should we listen to you? And if you try to stop us we will definitely retaliate."
