I've been semi-pro for the last 10+ years which works out fine for me. During that time I always come across cameras that I call must haves because of their functionality, image quality, feel, etc. Fuji medium format cameras are becoming that must have equipment for me. Of course by the time of this comment the 50sII and 100s have come out for amazing prices but that 50r is still on my list as it reminds me of my XE-2. Your images are very inspiring particularly the one of your son and the Asian woman in black and white. The details of your sons photo and the contrast of the woman are amazing. I may have to let go of my RZ67 Pro kit to help finance this one. Thanks for a great video and information.

Kevin, I absolutely enjoyed this real world review. There was quite a bit of food for thought in your commentary. I am one of those who sold my entire kit to purchase the 50s and the 63 2.8. I’ve since shaped that kit to my style by replacing the 63 with the 45 2.8 and adding the 110 f2. At point I owned all 6 GF lenses. And I love what this kit allows me to do, but I did miss the speed of my X-Pro2. And I missed my favorite XF glass. So when Fujifilm offered a body with IBIS, I jumped all over it. And next I brought back into the fold my beloved 16 1.4, 23 1.4, 56 1.2, & 90 f2. And Kevin I have to tell you, I’m not a Pro photographer, I’m a 32 year military vet who have absolute joy using a camera to make the invisible, visible. And I’ve got my eyes locked fretchingly towards the new 200 f2. Had one when I owned Nikon and loved the bokeh. I shot this lens at Fuji Square while in Tokyo and I’m in love with this focal length all over again. Continued success to you and yours. Chaplain

Kevin, the camera is very capable, no doubt, but it's the operator I want to acknowledge. I have studied your images for a while and I don't exaggerate in saying that they are moving. I'm sure people shed tears when they see their wedding or family occasion through your lens. Your images here, as elsewhere, have a human depth and timelessness that transcend whatever machine is used to make them. I think Fujifilm's great contribution is in offering cameras that enable photographers like you love to work with their tools.

A very well rendered review by an excellent photographer. I'm a full time wedding/portrait/family pro and I've been going back and forth between the 50S and the 50R as to what I intend to purchase (likely with the 45 and 63 as well and perhaps, somewhere down the road after I recover, the 110.) I've shot with two Sony A7r III's with Sigma Art primes for the last 1.5 years and despite the massive size, I've enjoyed the results immensely. The dynamic range and the focus accuracy, as well as the image quality, is simply the best I've gotten across any system. All that said, I shot Fuji for all of 2014 and 4+ years later still cannot get it out of my head. It was, by far, the most enjoyable system to use. I lived on the 23 and 56 (and the occasional 14 and 35) and shot an X-E2 and X-T1. This new format coming out couldn't have come at a better time, as though I've been terribly satisfied with the Sony gear because of the results, I can hardly call it "fun" to use. It's reliable and it's a true workhorse system, but I need to be having a good time with the tactile nature of the process again. Anyway, sorry to babble on, but I've admired your work for years and this is the first time I've heard you speak and I so very much appreciate the clarity you've shown in laying out the strengths and weaknesses of these new cameras and lenses. Now I really can't wait to get my hands on a 50R and start getting out there with it. Much thanks again-

The colours/tones/shades and three-dimensionality (my made-up term!) really shine through on your images Kevin - I only have an X-T1 with 16-50mm OIS II, but I am loving the colour profiles and ease of use, not to mention the light weight. I feel as if I have carried heavier loaves of bread! I really do have to commend Fujifilm for making photography interesting, but fun again. Not bad for a young man who started out with an old Finepix A120 with only 3 megapixels waaaay back in 1999.

Thanks for this Kevin, That’s amazing that you could use that on the dance floor with moving subjects! I was going to query how the AF performs in low light but I guess that answers my question. I shot medium format film with a Mamiya 645AF years ago, and I am contemplating getting this camera. I am mostly interested in street photography, portrait, and landscape. A few things that concern me about this camera are camera vibration, AF, and fps. One of the things that I remember from back when I shot with the 645 was having to be extremely careful when shooting without a tripod. I tried hold camera as close to my body to get as sharp an image as possible. Still, I could tell in some images that the sharpness wasn’t as good as I hoped. Now granted thing have improved over the past 20 years. However, this camera has no in-body stabilization. Anyone that has experience with this camera care to comment on their experiences trying to do handheld street photography or trying to capture candid photos without a tripod.
@ceciliaandemilia5 жыл бұрын
Sure is a great camera. Tom Heaton called it the "perfect landscape camera". Love the review, it's all about handling the camera, getting used to it and finding out how it works. It's very clear this just works... Shot with the woman on the steps is amazing!
@dirtywater53364 жыл бұрын
I've really been considering this for my landscape work. I could really use the increased resolution for the textures of trees in the distance. That's where my X-T3 struggles. While it still makes a usable image, it's hard to print large images of finely detailed landscapes. The resolution just ins't there. I like this one more than the 50S for its smaller, lighter weight. Hiking up mountains won't be so much of a burden. Something a lot of people don't mention with this camera is the ability to shoot full frame by setting the sensor to 35mm, which will only use the center full frame sized portion of the sensor and allow you to use full frame lenses without having to crop in post. Granted, I don't think this option was available before this camera or video was released. I believe it was a firmware update after release but that is a big selling point for people. Being able to adapt your full frame or 35mm film lenses could be the difference between selling your camera gear or keeping it

Oh dear Kevin, I've been mulling the GFX 50R over for a little while now, especially with the lens deals available when pre ordering. Thanks for taking the time to do this video, it was really helpful. Now wheres my credit card...

You're forgiven :D Lovely images by the way. I've seen a lot of comparisons with high megapixel 35mm format cameras and the stats say they're quite close in performance but there is something about the Fuji files which look much better to my eye. The tonality and focus fall off really give the images a depth and bring them to life. Do you find the AF works well enough for candid portraits and does eye AF work in continuous AF or just single AF mode? I'm thinking of picking one of these up with the 63mm lens to start although my preference would be the 45mm + 110mm but thats probably out of my budget at the moment.

Hi Kevin, thanks for the informative video. I’m currently shooting studio and environmental portraiture with a Sony A7Riii and a Nikon D850. From my somewhat limited knowledge of Medium Format the fact that these 2 FF cameras have sensors almost at 50 is only part of the story.
