1:36 I think the entire point of Violet's backstory is that. To feel out of place. She grew up in a war, and now she lives a peaceful life. In the early episodes, she takes even basic requests as "commands", but later on in the anime she's broken free of this habit. I think the point of her backstory is to show that she grew up in an environment where she was trained to be an emotionless warmachine, and this really puts a weight on how hard it is to convey human emotions to someone who has never truly felt them. This show is truly a masterpiece in terms of development and storytelling.

I've seen all of Violet Evergarden, & I think it is a masterpiece that cannot be improved except for one, very important detail. Now, this is my own hot take, maybe hotter than the surface of the sun. However, I think I bring up a valid topic of discussion when I say; the movie ruined the ending. Everything before it was a well-crafted life lesson on how to deal with loss, & overcoming grief so that you may spread happy emotions to the people you have right now. It was even wrapped up nicely with the beautiful stories in the OVA & first movie. However, I feel that bringing back the major was a huge dampening on the true meaning of letting go. I just can't help but feel the meaning of the series was changed from "moving on", to "wish hard enough & your wish will come true", all because of one movie.

Episode 10 freaking broke me. The day before I watched it, my dad who's passing away after having his third cancer relapse, handed me a letter he wrote over the past few months. I absolutely balled the entire episode cause Ann's story just felt so relatable, and I am genuinely too terrified to open that letter. I've strayed too far from what he and my mom wanted from me. I just want to know that they really would have loved me no matter what, and that we weren't held together purely by religion.

Same. We need more stories like it. Many people don't really asks themselves what real love is, or put romance on a pedestal because it is the most chaotic relationship rather than because they have a layered perspective on it (look at pretty much every western romance or chick flick. Non of them say anything new or meaningful about love that I know of). Violet Evergarden did include a lot of romance, but it uses romance to indirectly interrogates us on what we mean when we say "love". This show spoiled me. Despite thinking that, I get why one would say it's boring. Maybe social conflict or topics like wanting to know what "I love you" means isn't interesting to them. It's very much a girl's show.

27:09 I always loved one more thing about this scene that you didn't mention. In this scene when Violet mentions her coworkers Ann asks "there are more dolls that more by themselves?"(because Ann doesn't realize that Violet is a person until the last part of the episode). Now imagine if Ann said that to old Violet. Violet would immediately correct her and explain she's a human being. Instead here Violet just pauses for half a second and nods and says "that's right." She understood that little bit of misunderstanding made the soon to be orphaned girl happier...So she played along till the end. I loved that little show of growth in violet :)

It legitimately changed my life and help me get over some feelings regarding a relatives passing that I thought I had gotten over when in actuality I just kept those feelings bottled up inside. I thought it was difficult for something to make me cry until I watched this show for the first time. Violet’s story and the stories of those she touched through her interactions with them ended up making me cry more times than I ever had before. I just want to say, that this is the first anime in all my life that made me _cry_ in _each_ episode. I don't know if it was because I was tired when I watched it, but I remember it was so damn powerful that I just couldn't not cry. No animes made me cry before, nor movies nor series. Tears in eyes yes, feeling things yes, but never cry. This is really a first time for me, and that is also an other point that makes me think this anime is a true masterpiece. The animation, the story, the characters, everything is incredible. I think this is my favorite anime/piece of fiction of all time.

Interesting. Are you sure you cried each episode? I tried to watch it because of positive reviews and I also like slice of life anime in general. But when I watched Violet Evergarden, I dropped it after episode 2. I didnt feel anything while watching it. The visuals are so good but the story (especially ep1 and 2) is so boring and shallow that i cant continue watching it (note: this is just my own opinion so if this anime is so good for you, I wont argue about it).. I cried on several anime before (Clannad, A Silent Voice, Your lie in April, One Piece, To Your Eternity, Anohana, etc) but just didnt feel anything on the first 2 eps of Violet so I'm really surprised that each of Violet's ep are really cry-worthy?

"I Want To Know What 'I Love You' Means..." - Violet Evergarden. Whenever I think of the Words, "I love you", I'll always associate it with The Violet Evergarden Series. I always thought the words, "I love you", was just a phrase people say with no deeper meaning behind it. To me, it was just a phrase to get people to understand and express that they simply enjoy the other person. An easy, yet simple phrase to express to one another. Of course, I have to admit that I was so oblivious and dense to ever think that before. The Violet Evergarden Series has really taught me what the words, "I love you", could truly mean. Love is special, and the moments with the people you love are absolutely precious and truly cherishable. It conveys a sense of hundreds of thousands of emotions in just three 3 words. After watching the whole series, including the Final Movie, it really hit me hard and opened my realization to the words "I Love You". At that moment, it absolutely made me want to shed tears on how beautiful those words were. I'll never forget my experience with this emotional rollercoaster of a series and I'm forever grateful. Thank you Kyoto Animation for making this wonderful anime and Thank you Kevin Nyaa for making this outstanding video on your perspective on the Violet Evergarden Series. I loved how Violet Evergarden covered the effects of war in just about every aspect. Throughout the show there's bits thrown in about how with all the new technology they've begun advancing in building. Electric lights, elevators, radio towers, all new kinds of stuff. The whole reason auto memories dolls existed was (if I remember correctly) there wasn't a lot of people who knew how to read/write, so they would write letters and documents. The fact that they are very rarely shown writing for people who don't know how to write implies that it is no longer a nessity, but rather a luxury (meaning more people know how to read). Throughout the show you see the effects of war on families as well; memorials for soldiers who went missing in action, families grieving the loss of loved ones (not only soldiers but people lost in crossfire as well). And of course the grief of the soldiers who DID make it home as well, having to deal with the guilt of their actions and the trauma of seeing a fellow soldier die in the battlefield. I've never been in the military, but from what I know from talking to people who have actively served on the front lines, there's a lot of guilt that comes with getting to go home. Feelings like 'I should have died, not (__),' or 'I got to got to go home, but (__) didn't.' I've been told that fighting in war comes with a forced sense of desensitization for your actions, having to look past your actions to achieve a greater goal. I love this series with all my heart, truly. I won't lie, I cry a shit ton. I cried for A Silent Voice, I cried for the ending of Inuyasha, I cried for Children of The Sea, I cried for Pokemon (unapologetically), I cried for most of Fruits Basket (the manga), I cried for the ending of OHSHC, I cried for Your Lie in April, I cried for the end of Assassination Classroom, I cried for Anohana, I cried for Sailor Moon, I cried for Grave of The Fireflies, and I cried for the ending of Uzimaki for some fucking reason (also the manga.) And of course, I cried for this as well. However, unlike most of the others I cried over, Violet Evergarden had an EMOTIONAL IMPACT on me. Yeah, I cried when Ash Ketchum had to say goodbye to his pet butterfly when I was 8. Yeah, I cried when I watched a young boy starve to death in the subway and then reunite with his sister in spirit form during WWII. But did I change me perminantly as a person? No. Yes, it made me very sad, but it didn't change me. This did. When I first watched VE, it was the day after someone who meant everything to me had passed away. I was grieving very heavily, but since I had never really had to grieve the loss of a loved one I wasn't able to fully comprehend what I was feeling or what to do about it. In a way I was able to relate to Violet. While I was not ignorant of my own emotions, I was certainly not fully understanding of what exactly is was I was feeling. And, of course, I had lost my sense of purpose. This person was in my life every day since I was born, and now they were gone. I had never been prepared emotionally for what to do, and of course I was too stubborn to prepare myself for the inevitably of their death "(death never seems realistic to me, there's no way she could just leave me alone)" VE helped me feel things out during this rough time in my life. I soaked in All the different stories of all the different people like a sponge, and seeing all of this made it easier to understand I think. Of course, it was never really easy, and it still isn't. Death is never an easy thing to wrap your head around. All in all this show was a genuine work of art. A true masterpiece of writing and animation.

The show's theme on love has two aspects when it comes to courage. Gilbert didn't care if Violet loved him back when he told her "I love you." Rejection was of no consequence to Gilbert because his love for her was unconditional. That struck me as so beautiful because his ego was no part of his love. He didn't even believe that he deserved to be with Violet and yet he still said these words. This made me ponder how most confessions of love rely on reciprocation and how rare it is when someone just loves you against all odds of reciprocation. ❤❤❤ Gilbert kmthought he was going to die so that may have overcome any sort of emotional barrier to confessing. The anime perfectly illustrates that it is possible for two people to love each other for reasons other than the desire for status or lineage of marriage and offspring (although those things are the icing on the cake). The show illustrates that love can be purely based on loving the actual person with no promise for the future in sight. Initially the military theme seemd out of place for me as well. But I've come to realize that Violet represents the soldiers of war who are not always seen as heroes but tools of death that were expendable. In Japan it was dishonorable to return from war alive. It was preferable and more honourable to die and not return from the battlefield. Violet isn't just a cyberpunk character but represents surviving soldiers. Soldiers are merely tools to be used and disposed of as far as the rich and powerful are concerned. Most soldiers have no choice but to go to war. Their only purpose in life is to kill. The series does a beautiful job of fleshing out the humanity and depth of these soldiers through Violet Evergarden. Survivor's guilt was very well expressed. The resulting empty shell that Violet appears to be and the show's hope for all soldiers of war to find redemption through love.

It is a bizarre statement though, a fast paced, action packed story can be well written, there's just less focus on the intimate side of things, which is precisely what Violet Evergarden leans into. It's not a matter of being "well written", and more about the type of story being told, in this case, a slow paced, deeply character driven story.

You covered the contextualizing feelings thing very well and now imma just talk a bit about the war things in Violet and how Violet is very much a war story: So Violet not only is a very hallmark case of PTSD but also finds herself completely unadjusted to society as it is. I mean when soldiers go off to war and come back they find that society doesn't want to talk to them and that their experiences are wholly unshareable to anyone besides fellow veterans a few exceptions. I think that in this sense Violet's feelings strongly resemble feelings that are shown in All Quiet on Western Front in which teenagers drafted to WW1 grow up very fast because of their experiences in war and destroys their concept of civilian life. When veterans come back, they can't seem to enjoy the same experiences that they used to because war has insisted such a great sense of nihilism. Violet's case is extreme in which she quite literally rather die than live as a civilian at the beginning of the story. While you say Violet seems to "learn" about feelings, I disagree in this notation that Violet is more learning how to express herself rather than anything else. It is comparable to learning more techniques in art so you can better express the ideas in your head. In war, feelings have to be put aside in preference of the practical and Violet has that instilled within her and she naturally learns to care about Gilbert in war, but war doesn't allow means of expressing that. Even among fellow soldiers doing things like saving each other before the mission is forbidden because it gets people killed. In that sense, all soldiers are treated like machines. The one moment where Violet is learning about feelings is when she tries to commit suicide because of her guilt of killing so many other soldiers in the war. It reminds me strongly of the suicidal intentions of the protagonist in All Quiet on the Western Front where he kills the enemy in hand-to-hand combat and sits there as he dies. He tries to save the enemy thinking similar thoughts to Violet, but the soldier dies anyways. The protagonist's only consultation is that better the other guy than himself. Anyways the feelings that Violet has to learn to express and discover have been already said much better in your video, but I just wanted to recontextualize a bit for Violet's experiences as a soldier. The world in which Violet lives in is also still very much defined by the war as well. The most obvious example being the brother coming home from war completely jaded about having anything of a productive civilian life. Veterans want people to reach out to them even though they know that civilians and veterans are fundamentally different. It took that connection from Violet's friend to actually help him recover a bit and feel included in society. Other examples are how Ann's dad is dead because he fought in the war and Ann is very much alone because of her mother's fatal disease and the war that took her father. The final set of episodes with the terrorism subplot (though a bit iffy with its supernatural antics) really shows how people are psychologically affected by the result of the war and how difficult it is to move on. Dietfried similarly in these episodes has difficulty accepting Violet because of the loss of his brother and his men. War also makes it for some people impossible to move on in the war, like how the island that Gilbert resides on has almost no young men because all of them are dead and that the village has a hard time getting by because of the lack of them to help do work. Similarly in the OVA, Irene and the conductor have to accept that Fugo is gone and that they have to move on. In episodes 10 and 11, Violet has to deal with a dying soldier on the other side and delivers his letter back home to parents who think he is very much alive. Those people will forever be changed by the losses they suffered and they have to learn to love what they have and love that the good parts of the past happened, which was a major theme of the Violet Evergarden movie and the later episodes. Great video. Love your content. If you have time please watch kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5yugGZ6rZemesU&ab_channel=Animarchy its about a veteran's reaction to Violet Evergarden. It really help me contextualize all my thoughts about the anime.

But thankfully I started to feel better when 2018 was kicking off as I was getting back into movies/games. Few months later I came across the anime after seeing trailers and word of mouth much to my curiosity on this beautiful looking anime that the internet was talking about. I binged the series one night while being in tears as I reached episode 8-13. I never thought an anime series would make me cry so much afterwards but brought so much energy, life and happiness I haven't felt in a while. I quickly became reinvested into anime after ignoring the medium for a year or so during my funk. I begun binging series like Darling in the Franxx, Re:Zero, My Hero Academia, Dragon Maid, Little Witch Academia, and especially Konosuba that whole summer. It also gave me motivation to get back on my feet to start working out, cooking and get my driver's license when I was offered a driving job prior. Violet Evergarden remains one of my all time favorite anime series and I'm more than happy to watch it anytime if my friends or family demands it...

My parents passed away around the same time during the years from 2017 to 2019. At that time I got back into anime in a serious way for many of the same reasons. I revisited some old shows like Evangelion and found some new ones like Violet Evergarden, Girls Last Tour, A Place Further That The Universe, and Darling in the Franxx. I don't think non-anime fans understand just how good some of the storytelling in this particular medium is or how moving they can often be. 😎

The series was already heavy with plenty of feels but man I can quite happily admit that after the finale movie I was ugly crying like a little bitch. If any "recent" anime deserves to be remembered among the greats then it's this

I came to love Violet Evergarden in around 2019-2020 (can't remember exactly) and for me, this show brought me to tears. I like to follow the smallest details in a show/movie and Violet Evergarden for me can be summarized as, "A flower that has to learn to bloom." I find that few shows that detail beauty also hold a lot of philosophy, and it's that philosophy that seemingly many people neglect. Such a simple principal, even just a phrase, effects so much in a person's life. But sometimes, that principal makes someone think, for a long time as well.

Thank you to Kyoto for making such a masterpiece. It’s my favorite work done by them and one of my favorite works overall. Being able to see the movie on release day in theaters was a surreal experience. And thank you to Evan Call for composing my favorite soundtrack of all time.

Man i love your content so much. The way you phrase things just brings the best out of anything you're saying, for example "Kyoto animations pieces of art". Not anime, not shows, pieces of art. Amazing video.

First, I wanna appreciate you, Kevin, for bringing insight and your introspective view on Violet Evergarden. Violet Evergarden, to me, is more than a masterpiece but only because it shares Violet's journey on unveiling the hidden emotions that she is not aware of. I think the core messages behind this show are something that people could potentially relate to, especially with all the things that are going on in the world today. It's a mess. But I'm glad in a way that Violet is able to profound a sense of resonation through this anime. And of course, we can't forget to ever acknowledge KyoAni for bringing such a wonderful film to the world.

The music is gorgeous. The animation is amazing. And the foley work ... The sis of leather pulled away from her metal fingers. The clickity-clack of her metal fingers on the typewriter keys. Every. Single. Sound... Definite and purposeful. If they weren't there, you might not miss them, but the fact that they are just absolutely elevates this masterful piece of work. But, episode 10... As a father, this just gutted me. At age 50...I ugly sobbed. So very beautiful. It is one of the best pieces of visual storytelling I've ever seen. Live-action or animated.

I've finished this anime yesterday and it's a miracle one of my favourite anime "reviewers" (im trully sorry for my lack of vocabulary) have made a video about it, especially because i loved this anime, it trully struck me how detailed this anime and how well thought out it is especially how weather and generall arounding creates amazing atmosphere with candles, flowers and sounds of birds.

SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE Also kinda irrelevant idk just felt like expressing my opinion. In my opinion the film was wrong for making the major still be alive. It removed the weight to Violet's growth as a character. Much like the show, the film did bring me to tears but it wasn't for Violet finally reuniting with the major but it was for the ill child getting to say goodbye to his friend over the phone. By the time the movie happens, Violet's story is finished she has grown as a person and managed to accept and move forward from the major's death. So I felt more empathetic and involved with the story of the ill child than I did to Violet as to me, she was more like a cameo in this story about these 2 children.

I watched this anime while going through the worst breakup of my life so far. So everything that happened, I took in and analyzed everything. I was crying in almost every episode as I could sadly relate to everything but also because I'm an empath. I was overwhelmed and fell in love with the stories and the characters. I couldn't stop crying especially when she said she was burning. I couldn't relate more to that and it broke me. Violet Evergarden changed me as a person and helped me get out of the relationship I was in. It made me realize that the relationship I was in, wasn't love. It was just control.

I'm so incredibly grateful that someone else was able to put into words the message of the episode with Oscar Webster. As heart-wrenching as the story of that episode is, the tragedy isn't the part that should be the forefront, and it's the music that tells this to the audience. The composer could've gone with moody, melodramatic tones to convey the sadness of Oscar and the pain of his loss, but he DIDN'T. Evan Call went with soaring, hopeful, beautiful tones, with layered strings and winds meant to *celebrate* his time with Olivia and the beauty of those moments. Instead of pain and regret, we get a message of love and gratitude, and it's backed by some of the most breathtaking animation made to date. There's so many episodes of this series that cut straight to the heart and hit nerves, but that episode will never cease to be the highlight of the story to me.

The most thing I like about Violet is that she's a fairly independent women not depending on others or being sexualised cuz whenever there is a female protagonist in the anime it just focuses on that the female mc has a crush on some guy and wants to confess literally every shoujo I'm a girl myself and find it annoying to get stereotyped that all girls are cute, shy and have a crush thingy going on exact reason I don't watch shoujo and prefer shounen cuz seriously male mc's are so good like they have a purpose and are independent they fight and shoujo's are just a girl being shy getting sexualised very badly (Also normal in anime for a woman to get sexualised its wrong-) and at the end of the day only telling they're crush that they like them but Violet is different than rest female mc's she's independent and can fight she's a female mc that nowadays shoujo's lack this is the exact example of a female mc I want a fairly independent women someone who can fight and most important someone who actually isn't sexualised like don't wear those revealing clothes I prefer female mc's to wear clothes like violet I'm starting to get annoyed with short skirts it has become so common for female mc's to wear that nowadays I want them to wear violet's style a dress with long skirts they look really ELEGANT. I think violet deserves her popularity for being the first female mc in all anime history who is independent, can fight, (Is not sexualised), i love VIOLET!

Tje show was amazing at stoey telling. Let me explain what i mean, I just watched the show recently and the way Hodgkins tries to protect Violet from the truth is heartwarming, like the way when violet asks about the major in Ep.1 he stuffs his hand in his pocket and you can tell hes trying to think of a lie to save this girls life.

The symbolism with her hands, former representing a killer, the latter, albeit robotic, more humane and sympathetic, the very hands she couldn't kill herself with because they aren't meant to kill. They are meant to help atone herself, forgive herself and move on. I didn't notice this, as I didn't other things you broke down for us. For that, thank you! Awesome video.

Ok, I'm somewhat of a mischievous person at times and make fun of the things that makes me sad, but I cried like a dog when Violet got back to the office and said the girl was so little and going to miss her mother. In that moment everything just clicked, I said this is my faborite anime, ever as in evergarden. I hear the phrase I love you all the time but I never say it because I'm figuring out what it means too, after I watched this I'm like.... I think I grasped some ideas. Violet had people to care for her and comfort her, but honestly I'm just a loner who grew up hearing advices. That's why sometimes I'm cold blooded and it caused me an emotion wreck. The truth is I understand love, not because I grew up in it but because I know what love is not. Idk man... Evergarden sort changed me but didn't, it's like I found my long lost self, and I now have the guts to find it over and over again in my life.

Given the events of recent weeks. A story about a veteran who grew up in a world at war finding peace with herself is oddly appropriate. If you want to get a deeper look into how the military backstory makes sense. I humbly recommend my own video on it, I watched the series with a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, and interviewed him about his own experiences and how Violet embodies them. I'm glad someone else loves this show as much as I do.
