People think you need to spend THOUSANDS and thousands of dollars in order to buy a watch worth having in your collection, but I'm here to tell you that's NOT true. You'd be amazed at what some of these watches I review with my friend Teddy Baldassarre go for, it's madness!

Yea true, going out in general is expensive. I remember just last week, shouted my colleague breakfast at a coffee place, cost just north of $50 for 2 people. I got pancakes and a cold drink. Probably the last time I am shouting anyone anything. So for normal dinner $100 is pretty easy spent.

I just “resurrected” my dad’s old Tissot (automatic circa 1950) a quick wind and the watch came to life. Took it to a watch repairman to have it tested and his eyebrows went up, he said it is “spot on”. He placed a new band on it. I have been wearing and it is keeping time beautifully and every time I look at it it reminds me my dad.

Thanks to some decisions I've made in the past I can now afford 5-7K tier watches (I own 4 for now). But affordable will always be associated with the sub $300 category for me. That's what it was when I just started my watch journey with my beloved Orient Tristar (that I still own btw) and stayed like that ever since. I consider affordable based not on what I can afford but what the vast majority of people can and that is certainly far from 1k zone.

I bought and returned the Seagull unfortunately. I caught it "frozen in time" on several occasions. If my wrist tilted a certain way, it would freeze up and stop ticking until I shook it. It may be $300, just beware it might not be able to tell the time...

Mine has done the same thing a couple of times, the start stop pusher also stopped working. However, this only happened after i had smacked the watch on a wall or something. My local watchmaker fixed it for free, was only one part in the movement that had to be wiggled! All in all very happy with the watch

My personal list : - Timex M79 automatic, gold dial, rubber strap for that 70's feel - Timex Waterbury flyback chronograph, absolute banger - Swatch speed up chronograph - Kuoe Old Smith 90-001, especially the green dial with the lychee leather strap. Most impressive finish I've seen in a watch of that price and best green dial I have ever seen (seriously).

Affordable is relative but i don’t think the average KZbin viewer considers a watch over $2,000 as an “affordable” watch, most would consider that a luxury watch. They only had one watch under $550 and I didn’t like the one they showcased. So here are a few watches I like that I consider affordable, good quality, that look great too. Two are automatic and one a unique mecha quartz hybrid. All are available brand new directly from the company and all are under $400 brand new. Orient Kanno $235, Dan Henry Automatic Diver $270, Brew Retrograph Technicolor $375.

Mr. O'Leary collects watches at another level and for another reason than most of us, and that's fine. Affordability is certainly a very relative and subjective term. The last time I spent >$300 for a meal was when I treated my entire staff for congratulatory lunch. A key factor to consider is opportunity cost; every dollar spent on a watch (or whatever) could have been spent some other way or saved. Being able to afford an item is not the same as being able to justify buying it.

I remember my highschool graduation gift from my Grandpa was a $150 Bulova watch with a black leather band. Really got my interest peaked in watches mostly lower under $200 including g-shock, fossil, bulova, and citizen. I lost them all unfortunately when someone broke into my college dorm and stole way too much stuff from all the students. Fast forward to now I havent really owned a watch other than a smartwatch. Im getting back into the game looking for a good piece. These are all out of my price range but its nice to see these styles and what is out there that I can compare to other cheaper options under $600.

Two things for me. That Nomos has gotta have a better strap for that amount of money. And wow, that Zenith El Primero is dead sexy. When I was deciding between chronographs, I ultimately went with the Speedmaster over the El Primero because of servicing. If/when that El Primero needs a service, it's gonna cost a pretty penny. Servicing costs and the costs for parts for these niche movements is something that should be talked about more by watch collectors.

Always interesting to see what people consider as entry level or what they choose for their first purchase. My first “big”’purchase was a £45 Ricoh Medallion which was and still is stunning with a chocolate dial and original bracelet. Meanwhile I’ve seen folks asking what £10k watch they should buy as a gift for their father in law. It’s truly fascinating to hear opinions from multiple financial stand points. Now I’ve a Breitling 808, a few £1k+ chronographs and divers and I am always excited to see where my collection ends up. But I find it much harder to appreciate many watches I once aspired to buy. So it’s very interesting to hear what folks that spend tens if not hundreds of thousands on watches think on pieces that cost as much as their loose change 😅

For me it was Movado, but Tissot is better IMO, though Movado does pay a lot of attention to cosmetic details. The Tissot Seastar is a great value dive watch, and the PRX is awesome. I like Seiko a lot too, but some of their prices are too mismatched with the quality of the movement ($1K watch and $300 watch with same movement)
