I think the “overrated” part was where we’re all having trouble. But Angel isn’t coming from the perspective of just an audience member. She’s a WELL trained, classically trained actress. She knows what is necessary to fully develop a character. If you like at him from that angle, I get how she’s saying Denzel doesn’t really disappear with each character. John Leguizamo is an AMAZING actor who is a chameleon. He surprises me with each character.

I heard Billy Porter once say that it's harder being the lead character because all the attention is on you and as an actor you don't have anyone to play off of. All the side characters, props and context is dependent on you. All roads lead to you. As a side character of supporting actor, you have room space to blend in and play off of other actors and other spaces. I think part of why people like Denzel, Leo and let's say Brad Pitt don't transform anymore is because they are leading men, the stars of almost every movie they play in. For a while there they also released new movies almost every year. We saw their faces a lot. Part of disappearing into a character has to do with not always having the camera or spotlight on you. It's also sometimes that some people just have very distinctive mannerisms and personalities. The same for me with Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, Michael B Jordan, Beyonce etc. The only actor I can really think of that transforms: The LEGEND that is Meryl Streep. Even though you can still always see it's Meryl, you look forward to all the ways she's going to be a vessel and allow you to see into this character's world. Being a good actor is hard. Being a lead actor/actress seems even harder to me.

I think Angels true defense is the mannerisms of the role of the character the actor portrays. Leo in Django was spot on because he actually went off script during that broken skull scene and hurt himself and it got him gold. Jamie Foxx was almost the second guy during that scene. It's all about how the actor utilizes the characters mannerisms. In my opinion, you can replace Denzel, Will and Jeffery in alot of their movies with another actor. Guys like Jim Carrey, Johnny Depp, Laurence Fishburne and Leo Decaprio, it would be difficult to replace them in some of their respective movies.

I just have to say this: I think Roman J Isreal Esquire was one of Denzel's best performances. It's one of my favorites at least. He played a very compelling character - a man who values justice above pretty much everything but whose experiences force him to compromise his ethics. It seemed like a very different role for him. I think he got an oscar nomination, but I wish the film as a whole got more praise. If you haven't seen it, then I would definitely recommend.

I actually agree with Angel on this, except with Malcolm X. He absolutely crushed that role. And there are plenty of actors that do the same thing in every movie. Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Keanu Reeves, Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon and Liam Neeson, are all the same in every movie. That doesn't mean that he's not worth watching. He most definitely is worth watching. You're going to get a solid movie out of him, you're just going to be staring at Denzel the whole time.

Everyone misunderstood the point that she was trying to make. She messed up by saying the word overrated. Denzel plays Denzel. Doesn't make him a bad actor and hes actually a great one however he's never played a role where the character could be seperated from denzel. We love to see denzel so that's not a problem. However I can't recall a time where I watched a movie and he became something unrecognizable to the audience. An example would be heath ledger playing the joker. How heath ledger transformed himself in that role put him on a different pedestal acting wise. We have never seen denzel perform a role in that manner. That does not mean that Denzel is not a great actor however he isn't very versatile in the way that heath ledger was in that role. If you compared heaths role in Brokeback mountain to the role in Batman he would be almost unrecognizable. if you did the same with denzel in any role it would just be denzel still a great actor but just denzel.

This is the thing about Denzel: He doesn't have a Matrix or Batman DK, or Inception. What Denzel does is take a regular role like "Man on Fire", "The Negotiator" and makes it absolutely memorable. Some of these Chameleons are Chameleons because they don't do anything great, and stand out to be memorable.
