I resent people saying Martin had no theme or plot. It was a love story. The show revolved around Gina and Martin's love story. That's why it fell apart so bad when all of the off camera drama unfolded. The Fresh Prince just had more range and better writers.

Both shows kinda dipped at one point or another. Personally, I think the first what 2 or 3 seasons when the original Aunt Viv was on the series were peak Fresh Prince! As soon as we had light skinned Aunt Viv & Nikki magically aging up like 6 years between seasons along with Will & Carlton going to college, etc. the show really wasn't hitting like it used to. Yes, there were some great episodes in the backhalf of the series but nothing like when it first started. Martin's final season felt so off due to the BTS drama between Martin and Tisha so never seeing that iconic couple onscreen together after getting married was felt so wrong. I love both shows. However, I can't say which one I like better. You have Martin which is a bit more episodic but hilarious while Fresh Prince had a great story with iconic moments/characters along the way. Both are pillars in the history of black television.

The Fresh Prince all day. Impact on the culture, a more positive and diverse representation of black people, iconic episodes and characters, all the relevant cultural references and cameos of stars, iconic theme song, HILARIOUS and creative all-around premise of the show, creative and hilarious running gags, range of emotions represented without being overly, melodramatic i.e. police brutality, racism, classicism, sexism, ageism, guns, drugs, etc. They had black men and women of all shades represented whether they were full-time cast or guest stars. They presented the full spectrum of the black experience. We always think of the episode where Will and Carlton went to jail, but there were other episodes that represented racism and represented the roots of black people as well. They also tackled the conundrums within the black community on a pretty regular basis like the episode where Carlton wasn't black enough for the sorority, the dynamics of Will being cool at the predominantly white school, Uncle Phil not entirely wanting to represent where he came from in his speech, Phil and Vivian's fugitive friend who had a prison record for political activism, and the running gag of Will's friend, Jazz. It showed the different dynamics within the black community. To me, it's not even close. It's The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

The older I get the more I love the Uncle Phil stuff. James Avery took a “sitcom dad” and made him a far more complex character than the show might have demanded.
@princellasmith7562 Жыл бұрын
@@aidankeohane3370 He really did! A lot of TV sitcoms make the dad very goofy or super stern and harsh with little to no connection to their children, but Uncle Phil was a multidimensional man. He was stern, but he had personality, and he knew how to give the kids a hug when they needed it. He was a protector of his family, and he was a good husband to Vivian. I even liked when they had the ark of episodes of the conflict between he and Vivian. It showed the tug of war that he had between his ambition and his wife. I also love how overtime, he really grew to actually like Will. He always loved him, but he did not always like him.
@greenbeans9388 Жыл бұрын
Yeah…that’s Martin. Impact on culture, iconic episodes and characters, hilarious, cameos, theme song, creative and running gags. Shows were different, but better? Nah. Fresh Prince’s iconic episodes was Will’s dad and Will being shot. After that…not so much.
@tomstorm7926 Жыл бұрын
I liked Martin a little more. Both were great shows and very different so outside of them being black I don’t think had anything in common. Fresh prince focused more on family so it appeal to more younger people. Martin appealed to older crowd.

Yes!! Another great installment from this panel. Knowing that Mel is not of age to remember all of this comedic history AND that she is willing to “jump out the window” and hold her own with more senior male comedians that she clearly respects speaks volumes about not only her character, but also of her generation. Separately, she’s right to compare Bernie Mac and Robin Harris based on how they were positioned and the material that was pushing them into the mainstream. The Bebe’s Kids bit and “Milk and Cookies” were similar and poked fun at the same premise, bad moms producing bad kids that the narrator has to manage with hilarious results. Well done Mel!

Fresh Prince was a better show. Martin had more pound for pound laughs. Fresh Prince had more than 5 shows with lessons. The Carlton drug episode, the Carlton gun episode, the time Will and Carlton got pulled over and put it jail, the body shaming episode with Queen Latifah, the Black identity episode when Carlton was rejected by the black frat and when he tried to change his persona to stay in the hood with Jazz, and obviously the Dad episode with Will. Even the pilot had a lesson…Uncle Phil was judging Will based on how he looked, talked and where he was from but at the end of the episode Will started playing classical music on the piano which made Uncle Phil look at him differently; teaching people to not judge a book by its cover. The Fresh Prince just had more depth, was better written but still had laughs while Martin was a tour de force of comedy by Martin and the cast
