This guy is really on to something. The neo-traditional folk thing has been done a million times before, but his offhanded, strangely intense style is unique, unaffected and quite riveting.

He’s heavily influenced by his work recording traditional musicians in the south for archival purposes. Field research.

I didn't really realize that the old timey mountain music was before bluegrass. This guy is great at shining a light on the early folk music. I was born in the 1970s and was blessed to be exposed to the old time mountain string bands in rural North Alabama before these artists passed away.

I so him open up for Wilco a couple of years back, and I enjoyed his show every bit as much as Wilco. His playing is simple, beautiful and unpretentious and his lyrics are very poetic, a rarity these days. I never saw John Fahey or Dave Von Ronk, but I got Jake around to see again.
