This is the song you listen to when you are caught between being ‘just a friend’ and ‘being a real lover’ to somebody. It’s what you listen to when you feel like you are walking on the blade of a knife trying not to miss that special someone and message them pouring your heart out, even though they couldn’t really care less. It’s what you sing out loud in the shower when you see them with somebody else. You can never call them a lover because they were never yours to lose. The only way you can get over this feeling is by pretending and this song captures that beautifully.

This song, for me, is the perfect description of an "almost something", where the other person wasn't a friend to you but you never got into a real relationship. Sometimes, when something dies without even starting, it can hurt a lot. And, in the bottom of your heart, you still love her/him, but at the end the best you can do is go on and pretend they were just some lover.

I asked my best friend out last november, and she said no. She introduced me to the Arctic Monkeys, and this was the first song she played to me. It will also be the first song that plays in my head when I think of her. I genuinely thought my feelings were reciprocated. She once told me she would date me if I asked. I used to give her flowers sometimes, I was head over heels in love. Although, even if she had said yes, it would not have gotten anywhere, I don't live in a country where a girl can date a girl, and highschool relationships seldom ever last anyways. There were too many hurdles, and its just a passing dream now. Shes beautiful, and deserves the world, I know she'll do well in life. Our friendship is growing apart, not because of the above mentioned situation, but because of our busy schedules. But she'll always have an important role to play in my memories that I will cherish.

This is what a nostalgia of emptiness feels like, of the sick enjoyment of remembering someone who was so ingrained in your soul but you know should never be yours, of the past memories that still slip through once in a while. It's a song of goodbye, the one you still sneakily sings when you're "pipe and slippers and rocking chairs", because it reminds you of that summer, spent with the one you once thought you'd spend it forever, when the only thing left to do for you to hang on to is the hope that maybe it was never meant to be. Pretending that they were just some lover just to make it easier than looking back and thinking, what if.

Sing along: Do you still feel younger than you thought you would by now? Or darling, have you started feeling old yet? Don't worry, I'm sure that you're still breaking hearts With the efficiency that only youth can harness And do you still think love is a laserquest? Or do you take it all more seriously? I've tried to ask you this in some daydreams that I've had But you're always busy being make-believe And do you look into the mirror to remind yourself you're there? Or have somebody's goodnight kisses got that covered? When I'm not being honest, I pretend that you were just some lover Now I can't think of there without thinking of you I doubt that comes as a surprise And I can't think of anything to dream about I can't find anywhere to hide And when I'm hanging on by the rings around my eyes And I convince myself I need another And for a minute it gets easy to pretend that you were just some lover When I'm pipe and slippers and rocking chair Singing dreadful songs about summer Will I have found a better method Of pretending you were just some lover? Will I have found a better method Of pretending you were just some lover?

I was checking my Facebook and I saw one old friend online. I greeted him and the first thing that he told me was "Hey, check this outt". I started listening to it and suddenly my tears came out. I have been listening to it all evening long. This song It's perfect. This song touches my soul and reminds me my last High school year.

It's raining outside and the living room is quite dark and calm. I'm listening to this song at maximum volume and watching the video at full screen. What a beautiful moment.

This is how it should have been on the record. Just acoustic guitar and vocals. You realise just how special this song is when it’s stripped to its core.

There's some lyrics of this song that I relate with so painfully I want to stop listening but it's such a beautiful song.

Been listening to this song and watching this video for years, after a heartbreak and just found out that the last lyrics aren’t “well I have found a better method of pretending you were just some lover, but “will” I have found a better method of pretending you were just some lover?” Damn.

This song is undoubtedly the best of his songwriting. Focused as well as poetic and beyond soul crushing. Brilliant.
