Why is there 2 holes or pl jacks in the front of the 2i2? Is it instrument input?

How can you best record alternative rock drum tracks using the 4i4 using traditional drum kit? What mics would you use and how would you place them or set them up, knowing the number of inputs?

With only 4 inputs, this is what I have done in the past: Snare - SM57 Kick - Audix D6 or equivalent Two Overheads - Matched Pencil Condensers Set them up behind the drummer, and aim them toward each side of the kit. Try to aim them so you can pick up the toms and hi-hat/ride. Don't worry too much about getting a snare sound in these...fiddle with the SM57 until you find something you like. Most importantly...since the toms aren't mic'd individually, MAKE SURE THE DRUMMER DOESN'T HIT THE CYMBALS TOO LOUDLY. Technique will be important here.
