This is a very cool woodwork joint called a key haunch pass through mortise and tenon. Called a shachi tsugi in Japanese and used in joke construction where two horizontal beams join in a vertical column

In case anyone is wondering about the book: The Complete Japanese Joinery by Hideo Sato (Author), Yasua Nakahara (Author), Koichi Paul Nii (Translator) It is two different books, translated and expanded for western audiences and bound into one volume. The first book, Japanese Woodworking, is about the basics of Japanese woodworking and tools. The second, Japanese Joinery, is about building Japanese houses, emphasis more on timber framed construction but other elements are included as well. It isn't a book for furniture makers, but you could definitely take some ideas from it and apply them to furniture making if you were so inclined. Hope that's helpful.

not sure if the books would be as valuable as watching this guy and others like him do it live. My grandfather used to always tell me, "you can read about how to put a fence up, but that doesn't mean it's going to keep the goats in." LOL.
