Nice job. A bit much on the engine but weather can change fast in NC so nice to be able to get home in a hurry. I miss the Outer Banks but my brother moved from Kitty Hawk to NM and I'm in Bali so at my age I'll never fish there again so thanks for the video. Lots of memories.

Beautiful boat and a great video! The 115 hp outboard looks like the perfect match for this boat... Thanks Jeff

I had a 115 4 stroke and it’s a little too heavy. A 70 4 stroke or a 90 2 stroke would probably be better. A 50 would be too small in my opinion. I built this same boat.

Many use this with motors as small as 40 hp and they'll get up on a plane with 6 people aboard and that motor. Personally I'd use a 50 - 75 or so as ideal unless I was using with with maximum loads. The one with the 40 doesn't plane with 15 people aboard, but it still semi displaces.

@@tjkid07 I didn’t realize that it was a 24 foot boat when I posted my comments so I edited my post. I am considering a 19 to 21 footer and the cost of the motor and trailer and the most cost effective being around a 40 hp motor and build a trailer too fit the boat using an old used trailer. I am kind of stuck with the question of would a19 be big enough and would the 21 be more than I need for 2 people and a dog?

@@drumminsonlive9199 were I live in Louisiana if you build a boat under 20ft in this style with no floatation it’s an illegal boat. Check the regulations in your area.

These Spira Carolinia Dories are fantastic boats. I built the 18’ Carolinian. They don’t require a lot of power to do their thing either.

how does it handle offshore rough stuff?

Hi,i did find Spira just few days ago and i love his boat desings. I was planning to get 18` carolinian but then i found out that spira aint with us anymore. Do you have plans in PDF? is there anyway that you could send them to me?? I really would like to build this boat and take my wife and kids on to water. Thx in advance,from Finland

This is a good looking boat. From watching the video, it looks like this is an easy riding flat bottom boat. I know the water was quite smooth overall, but at speed looked like there was very little jostling to the crew. Looks like she is doing between 15 and 20 mph in the vid. Am I correct? How does this boat compare to a Carolina style warped v bottom boat if the same beam and length?

GREAT BOAT ! If it was 8 feet wide ( vs 7 ft. ) with a wider transom ( to scale ) it would be even better ???

Beautiful job, looks like it could use a splash rail though
@tjkid074 жыл бұрын
I don't see any splash coming over the side. Why do you think it needs one?
@tyrsafray46404 жыл бұрын
Because the water is traveling all the way up the side of the hull to the rail... “WET BOAT”
@americanrambler49724 жыл бұрын
I watched a slow motion play of the side outboard view of the cut water traveling up the side of the boat. At first I thought a splash rail would be useful and a good addition. But then I changed my mind. A spray rail addition would not be beneficial and may be detrimental. After watching how the water travels up the side of the hull, then hits the overhanging top rail, I saw the whole water stream get bent sideways and away from the boat. It looks like to me, we are getting what amounts to a hydraulically extended spray rail. The water hits the top rail, and is directed outboard in a fairly thick boundary layer stream. As such, it is forming an umbrella and capturing all of the smaller spray drops which are then carried out and away from the boat, looks kinda weird and wet, but actually is working demonstratively well at keeping the boat dry. I find this to be a good demonstration of how Phil Bolger was describing the lifting and energy efficiency of a flat bottom over a “V” bottom. He was talking about as the boat moves forward, it is directing the water pressure (energy) down under the boat and generating hull lift vs a “v” bottom spilling water (lift) and associated energy out to the side, thus losing energy and lift and describing how the shape of the forward “rocker” is important in relation to the side shape in containing and redirecting that water pressure energy vertically down into the water column instead of out to the side. The water moving up the side of the hull demonstrates the amount of energy (fuel) being lost to push the boat forward, up to the top of and through the water. The escaping water is energy and water pressure spilling out to the side of the boat instead of being directed under it. Basically, that spray is wasted horsepower and fuel.

The boat is planning with a lot of turbulence at the transom and it needs spray rails to prevent the water from washing up the sides of the boat near the transom. The boat is too narrow at the transom.
@loveofsea14 жыл бұрын
The engine is way too deep and it needs to be trimmed full down to work on flat water. A lifting strake across the transom would make it a whole different boat..
