As a teacher for 42 years, it is amazing what some people name their kids. One year a mother came in to enroll her son and introduced him as "Pizlam".... I told her I'd never heard that name before and she told me it was "Biblical".... I asked her how it was spelled and with a straight face said P S L A M..... True story.

Indeed. I don't know why American blacks like giving their kids these weird names (whites do it too, but those end up being either Celtic names like "Saoirse" or normal names with strange spellings like "Lynsey"). American doctors have to encourage new mothers to not name their kids things like "Placenta" or "LaTrine." I even saw a Lemonjello once (pronounced La-MON-je-low).

Hi BPs, I'm an American who watches a lot of British comedy, almost exclusively even. That said I adore Key & Peele and I found you while searching KZbin for British reactions to their work. There are so many brilliant sketches you could watch...My favorites being, Gay Wedding Advice, Pizza Order, Consequences, and Slow Brotion (to name a few). The handsdown most popular sketch, though not mine, is East/West College Bowl. It would be almost impossible for anyone outside the States to fully grasp, but it pokes fun at names given to, or assumed by, African Americans. I mention that bc the Substitute Teacher sketch is poking fun at the same thing. The sub with 20+ years in the inner city, read, with Black students, doesn't recognize typically pronounced names, and reads the students' names as they very likely would be pronounced by African American parents naming their children. The comedic element of surprise or tension is further built into how ready Mr Garvey is to "go to war" when these students are actually calm and ready with safety goggles on for Chemistry class. This sketch unfortunately permeated US culture to the point that anyone named Denise or Blake have certainly had their names mispronounced in jest à la Mr Garvey. And I find myself using "You done messed up, A-A-Ron" more often than i ever imagined. Thanks for the reaction vid!

Hi guys, yes that was funny, I was going to bring up Rowan Atkinson, but you beat me to it. But they really did make me laugh out loud, I will have to look up these guys. Stand up and sketch comedy is my very favorite television. A comedian you may like is Jeff Alan, he’s quite old, but has a wicked sense of humor. As well as Jo Koy. Key & Peele is funny. What I would call a bit of 'discomfort' comedy. I don't watch too much but what I have seen is like something we all experience just carried to a new level. 'Date at a French Restaurant' (or whatever the title was) made me squirm in my chair. I have never tried to impress a date with a foreign language then get destroyed by a native speaker. But I could see a lot of trying to impress a date in somethings I have done. It is funny.

3:13 - In order to grasp the humor context of this skit, it's important to mention that in many American inner city schools, it's not uncommon to have students who have dramatically-pronouncing names such as "Da'Quan" and "Sha'Tanya". So this inner city school teacher is mistakenly mispronouncing common names and thinks it's necessary to act aggressively to maintain classroom order.

Eh no its not hard to grasp at all. Most native English speaking people grew up watching American tv so we have a good grasp on the culture. I'm Irish (50 years old) and I understood this immediately. I didnt need to look up something i didn't understand. I've seen American reactors not GET IT. I mean its in the description box for starters FFS. Its not that esoteric for gods sake
