We spoke to RADM Ben Wachendorf (US Navy, Ret.) for his views on the OceanGate Titan submersible tragedy and the dangers facing submariners in the deep sea . Ben is a former commander of a US Navy submarine and is an SMA Executive Advisor.

Is there a possibility to use a hybrid titanium and carbon fibre ie main haul titanium wrapped in carbon Uber?

This navy man thinks that the porthole is what blew in first. Now that I think about it ,before, I had thought it was the shape and the carbon fiber, but now I think that it was the porthole. He’s right about the photos of the recovery mission and the porthole being missing. If the carbon fiber blew in, that wouldn’t necessarily blow out the plexiglass viewing port. Everything I’ve learned about this is saying that the viewing port is only good down to 1500 feet. Even though they have been down to the titanic 13 out of 96 times successfully, I believe the port just couldn’t take any more of the pressure.
