Great reaction. Ghost received a grammy for this song in 2015. Its an excellent song. Yes, their singer's voice is what makes them different from other "metal" acts, that and performances that aim to suit the song as best as possible. They draw from 70's and 80's bands heavily. Some jokingly call them "Scooby Doom", or "ABBA metal" (since Ghost is from Sweden).

Dave Grohl snuck in as the drummer during a live show in California. The beauty of The Nameless Ghouls is they can be interchanged and won’t cause a distraction. It’s truly remarkable. Hell, even Tobias wasn’t known to be the vocalist until 2016/2017. They made it 10 years without the truth coming out. The idea of a perpetual band is phenomenal. The Nameless can continue on for eternity. New Ghouls, new Papa, same Ghost.

everything about ghost is very deliberate. the basic lore is that the band is part of a satanic church whose mission is to basically help satan take over the world through music. so the music is designed to be intensely catchy and to play well in a large space, and TF's vocals are sweetly seductive to draw you in. the music is also very influenced by really old-school metal bands and prog rock, with the sound overall becoming more pop-y over the years.
@JL-1123

I always kind of equate the vocal approach to Ghost as a parody of Sauron from Lord of the Rings. Sauron's original form is supposed to be that of a beautiful elf, able to seduce other elves into his service, and as you said, the catchy, harmonic tones of Ghost are intended to do the same.

I got so excited when I saw you reacted to a Ghost song! Thanks for making this video! If you ever wanted to make another one with their songs, I’d recommend something from their new album Impera. They’ve always been a deliberate, technically-driven band that is constantly on board with taking artistic chances, but this new album seems so masterfully done! I’m not a musical person myself-I just listen for fun, but I’d love to hear someone knowledgeable talk about either Hunter’s Moon (has a music video) or Respite on the Spitalfields (no music video yet). Hunter’s Moon is one of my all-time favorites, and Respite on the Spitalfields has so many pieces and so much going on that I’d love to know more about the intricacies of what’s happening musically in that song. Griftwood and Spillways are other potentials that you might enjoy breaking down. Thanks again for making this reaction video! I enjoyed watching it!

Their earlier stuff really reminds me of Sabbath. Their newer albums are more pop. A perfect example of that is Dance Macabre. Meliora is my favorite album, but Infestissumam is much darker especially subject matter. One of the coolest thing about the band is seeing them live. Tobias (Papa) treats the crowd as his congregation and its a lot of spectical. The back of the stage looks like stained glass, and he most preaches between songs. Its a cool experience. Edit: their first 2 albums sound much closer to Sabbath since they used tape and vintage equipment to record them, so they just sound like some early metal band from the 70s

Rats and Square Hammer are my favorites, although Dance Macabre is what I often introduce other people to when they can watch music videos. That one is a fun ride! But From the Pinnacle to the Pit is AWESOME. Super catchy, and a real crowd pleaser live. My wife and I saw them in Louisville, Ky. An old coworker had introduced us to a couple songs and we were shocked by their sound vs their image. But then we didn’t really listen to it much until they came on the radio here in Lexington KY. I pulled them up on my phone to play more after we got the Ghost bug again, and saw they had a concert that night an hour and a half away for super reasonable prices. I looked at my wife and said “Hey. How about a concert. Could we just…go now? Are you cool with that???” She made me go home for a quick change lmao. But then we were on our way, blasting other songs we’d never listened to that were on the set list for the tour. By the time we got there, rats was stuck in our head completely. It was in an old, red carpeted theater, with great merch, and the friendliest mix of edgy and average dressed people. I was in heaven. Then we went, sat in good seats(!!), and experienced the BEST concert of my life. The warmth and comfort exuding from Tobias, the lead singer/songwriter/anti-pope, was unreal. I’ve never felt more loved or appreciated in a concert and have been a loyal fan to HIM and the band, not just the music, ever since. And I gotta say, Rats live is AWESOME. The whole theater rang with the crowd singing along, there were face splitting smiles everywhere I looked, and the general mood just kept going up and up as the concert went on. I even felt close to everyone who attended that same concert by the time it ended. I got a band shirt from that tour, and it was super high quality. Best shirt I’ve ever bought at an event or concert. I’ve been a regular purchaser of their shirts off their website, especially when they do special art runs for their new popes and cardinals. Ugh. They’re amazing. Even if I listen to other bands more (Nightwish and Unleash the Archers are my all time favorites), Ghost will have a special place in my heart that will have me singing their praises for the rest of my life.

Geebz, per your comment on what you expected in the vocals, Tobias toned down his vocal style in this song (IMO) due to the subject matter. In this song, he is an evil character seducing an innocent woman. He's using a gentle, empathetic tone to get her to let her guard down and let him in - a wolf in sheep's clothing, per se. He sings, "I can feel the thunder that's breaking in your heart. I can see through the scars inside you." He knows the only way to obtain and corrupt her is to hide his evil nature and put on this "good, safe gentlemen" mask. Hope that helps!
@feral_orc
@feral_orc 2 жыл бұрын
I see this as more coming from a place of empathy rather than manipulation. The themes in Ghosts songs are usually not that complex or truly dark, and I think it's more directed towards people who are ready to make a change in their lives but are anxious or scared. They don't really make songs about doing evil things to people, so the song being about manipulating someone else does not fit for me. That's how it feels to me, and I always felt like it was being sung to anyone willing to join them in their journey and not specifically to a woman, which is a weird thing to pick out from this too.
@dream_in_digital
@dream_in_digital 2 жыл бұрын
@@feral_orc I saw some interviews with Tobias talking about the meaning of the song. That's where my information is coming from. There are other examples of this in his work. The official music video for "He Is" is another example. A religious figure with bad intentions preying on the vulnerable and innocent. However, music is up to the interpretation of the listener. What a song means to an individual, even if it isn't the artists' vision, isn't wrong or incorrect.
@feral_orc
@feral_orc 2 жыл бұрын
@@dream_in_digital Yeah I get that, for me a lot of what appeals to me about Ghost is the implicit irony in singing about satanic themes like it's a love song, and a lot of their songs feel like a celebration of being an outcast. Cirice in particular was a huge inspiration to me as a writer, it helped encourage me to step out of my shell and start telling stories. It felt like Tobias was speaking to me and saying "you can do it, no matter what you've been through, I can see past all that crap, to your potential underneath." I understand upon reflection how common of a manipulation technique that is, but I think that's a great example of how they write their music starting with inspiration from something darker and do their best to try turning it into something else.

Getting into Ghost about 2 years ago or so was like a breath of fresh air honestly. Great band. Next ones by them should be "Square Hammer" and "From the Pinnacle to the Pit."

Their new album just continues in that huge-sounding glitzy glam rock direction. Really operatic and hooky riffs backed by those awesome vocals and sprinkled with grim-sounding pipe organs. I love Ghost.

My favourite Ghost tracks are on their debut LP. Con Clavi Con Dio, Elizabeth, Satan Prayer. Also they have, in my opinion, probably the best Beatles cover in Here Comes the Sun.

Huge Ghost fan here! Thanks for listening to this! That album, Meliora is definitely chalk full of hits.. I can't think of a bad song on there. However, a few years ago they released a two song EP. On that was "Mary on a Cross". The first day that song came out, I without exaggeration had that song on loop in my car or in my headphones when I wasn't driving, for the next 48 hours without pausing. That song has been the biggest ear worm for me in my entire life..

Hey there! Love your videos so much it's so fascinating to see you pick out all of these little details that I'd never heard before and giving credit to all the band members and others who put so much work into all these songs. My personal favourite Ghost song is probably 'Faith' so it would be awesome to see you cover that at some point. I've also just gotten into a band called 'Bleed From Within' that would be great to see you take a look at. Hope you're having a fantastic day :)

You can never really go wrong with any Ghost song for a first time listen, but Cirice is definitely a strong one since it won a Grammy (if anyone cares about that kinda stuff), and Tobias himself actually recently recommended this song to first time listeners. This was the first song that I listened to from them. It was weird, I was just minding my own business listening to Type O Negative on youtube one night and then autoplay went to the next video and it was Cirice. I was expecting a growly voice, but was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't. Not that I have a problem with growly vocals, they just have to be done the right way lol. Anyways, the next song I got to listen to from Ghost was Rats! I would say that one is also a very strong track, very catchy. Been a fan of theirs for a year and got to see them live last month! Woo! Though, I'm curious as to where *you* would like to go from here in the Ghost journey lol. Since Cirice is from Meliora, their third album, you could go in different directions. If you want to listen to something older from them, I definitely recommend a track from Opus Eponymous, their very first album ("Ritual" or maybe "Elizabeth"). If you want something a bit newer, you could go with a track from Prequelle, ("Rats" or "Dance Macabre"). OR you could go with their absolute newest stuff to come out from their upcoming album, Impera, and 3 tracks from that are out to listen to. It's hard to choose since the full album isn't out yet, but I think I'd recommend "Call Me Little Sunshine". I didn't mention any songs from their second album, Infestissumam, but like all of their albums, it's hard for me to just pick one. And of course there are more bangers on Meliora ("Square Hammer" and "From The Pinnacle to the Pit"). Sorry if there's too many recommendations in this comment, but again, as a fan, its hard for me to choose just one song. I feel that the band has a lot of variety in their sound for each album. Almost like there's a little something for everyone. :)

Ah love it, been waiting for you to have a listen to Ghost. The band is definitely a pastiche of classic proto metal/rock. Sometimes they actively attempt to sound like a contemporary of Black Sabbath as an obvious example, but they also have a tendency to narrow in on eras of hard rock more generally. So, for some suggested listenning, I've provided a selection that I think gives a solid look at their range of sounds. "Ghuleh/Zombie Queen" Live @ SiriusXM // Octane - An unplugged performance. Jigolo Har Megiddo (also has a great accoustic performance available online), but I really think you'll dig the album version. Danse Macabre And one of their newest tracks Call Me Little Sunshine. I feel confident you'll tease out some sounds from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s in these. There's loads more good songs to check out from them, but I think these alongside Cirice give you a pretty solid range to try out. They are an elaborately theatrical band, their live performances are really a treat musically and visually.

Aye Geebz! You're most likely going to fall in love with this band. They're truly extraordinary. Even better live in concert. This was actually the very first I heard of theirs as well. A few albums and live RITUALS later and they're still kicking ass. Recommend songs > Year Zero, Dance Macabre and finally, Ritual. That's a very, very tight list. I think you're to find their work nothing short of incredible. Alright 🤙 💚🖤

Just saw Ghost live back in February. It was my second time seeing them. It was just as amazing as the first. Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Ghost. Their new album "Imperia" drops this Friday. Edit: Just as a note for you . Cirice was supposed to be the ending of a 9 minute instrumental called "Devil Church". After Tobias had suddenly figured out a chorus for this particular section of the instrumental, it was split from "Devil Church" and made into what it is now.

Pinnacle to the Pit, Square Hammer, Elizabeth, Year Zero are all great original songs. They do have a couple handfuls of great covers as well. Their version of Here Comes the Sun is super good. They also have been starting their new tour off with their version of Enter Sandman that they recorded for the big anniversary thing last year. Great version. Rich the Ancient Metal Beast

Some try to shit on Ghost for the poppy sounding not matching their image while being labeled as metal but Tobias is a damn genius. All his projects sound very different from the other and he deserves to have creative freedom. The only thing I have to complain is their older stuff had better lyric composition, now they seem too week but overall they are very enjoyable. Little update: just heard the new album, is amazing.

You should check out the Japanese band Ningen Isu. I recommend The Colour Out of Space. It's amazing. They're amazing! Might be tough to find on Spotify as the titles are in Japanese there. But you can easily find it on youtube. Plus seeing what the band look like is half the fun. It's like each member had their own costume idea and was unwilling to budge.

Ghost is a message driven band imo. Which is why the music feels so comfortable. They bring you in with an easy melody that resonates then fill your head with the debbil. They definitely cut their spot out of the scene where growling, screaming and finger bleeding shred tracks started to get overwhelming. This was more of their surface album to draw people in. They're always morphing the sound, but right now if it is t broke...

Lots of people unaccountably hate Ghost precisely BECAUSE they don't sound like Behemoth but have the whole death metal look. Metal purists are weird. In my head though, Ghost is basically musical theater about a satanic death metal band, and through that lens they're almost perfect. If you see their live shows (which I would encourage) you'll know this to be true.

At this time they were leaning hard into making songs, to make videos out of, that are little tributes to classic horror. The video for this song may be their best. Patterned after a 70's style supernatural thriller (thinking Carrie or The Omen), the band are played by kids at a school talent show gone horribly, horribly wrong. Such an amazing band. All pop should be this good. They have some edgier stuff, but it's all good. Rich the Ancient Metal Beast

I think Ghost really does a good job of weaving the 2 guitars together, especially on some of the solos. That's the extra effort that makes Tobias and the band standout. I also like their use of Keyboards. Which few heavy bands seem to do well.
