@kultur-vultur

@@nicolaspigrais482 No, I think it was just slated to be released the same week and Warner pushed it back to avoid confusion with their more flagship band RHCP. Mr. Bungle California would be listed right before RHCP Calofornication. This only fueled the Patton/Keidis dispute, with Bungle getting kicked off shows and then dressing up like them for Halloween.

Goodbye Sober Day is my favorite song of theirs. My (now ex) wife and I were obsessed with California and happened to be in Vegas one weekend. One of the nights she decides to stay in the hotel while I went out with our friends. I come back and she's freaking out about how she saw this show and on it was this Balinese chant (the Kechak) and that was the "Chack, Chack, Chack" part of Goodbye Sober Day. After that weekend we were home and another friend invites us to go to Bali with him and his wife. Several months later we got to see the Kachak in person in Bali. These experiences on top of seeing Mr Bungle in concert many times are some of the best times of my life

This album though. NOTHING compares. From this song to Retrovertigo, to Ars Moriendi, to Pink Cigarette, Sweet Charity, and more... There's so much gold here. For me this is one of the greatest albums any band has ever made. The band is so non-conformist but also incredibly creative and talented. Challenging all expectations and assumptions about making music, while also creating something absolutely memorable too. I mean you can sign along to so much > "walking on air, up from the wheelchair, I'll find my suicide, that I deserve" And how about the lyrics. "These words are sledgehammers of truth, that pound the iron heart of sin" - like so much of Mike's lyrics (in this band and others), it feels like he has something deep and meaningful to say, but really he's just having fun with you the listener. And that's kind of what the band is about - having fun, pushing those boundaries and expectations, all while exploring different possibilities in music. I appreciate the reaction!

I’m seeing a lot of suggestions for “Carry Stress In The Jaw”. I completely agree. It’s on their album “Disco Volante” which was definitely their most experimental. I loved their first album (clown face) , and it was in heavy rotation for many an acid trip, so when I got Disco Volante, there was a lot of cognitive dissonance. I wondered if it was even the same band. But, over time, it grew on me like a fungus. There is soooo much depth to it. And one of my favorite things about it is the dynamics. There’s a very clear lack of heavy compression in the mastering phase. You’ll find yourself turning up the volume in parts and turning it down on other parts. Pure. Just pure.

Love this track, great album too. It was their attempt to make something radio friendly (apparently they weren't listening to what was on the radio in 1999). Check out spinoff bands Secret Chiefs 3 and Fantomas if you're so inclined. Especially the album 'Suspended Animation', there's really nothing like it. Also Zorn's Moonchild project, my fav is Six Litanies for Heliogabalus. Maybe Slayer, too. As for genre, they were adapting contemporary art music techniques to rock music which I see as straight up prog right down the middle.

So happy to see another Mr. Bungle reaction! They were an inspiration to many of the bands you have covered on your channel. I believe this album was one of the most complex analog recordings ever done, and Brian Wilson was a huge influence on Trey's (guitarist, etc,) engineering guidance. To complete the Warner Bros trilogy, I recommend "Carry Stress in the Jaw" from Disco Volante. As for "Six Degrees of Separation" recommendations, just throw a dart at a list of any of Patton's other projects (Faith No More goes without saying): Fantomas, Tomahawk, Moonchild or any of his work with John Zorn, his EP with The Dillinger Escape Plan...But it would be REALLY cool to listen to you react to something by Trevor Dunn's Trio Convulsant!

The vocalist for Bungle is Mike Patton, who is one of the great vocalists of the last few decades, and perhaps an all time great. He's most well known for the band Faith No More, but he's done about a million side projects that showcase his talents in different ways. My recommendations for a Mike Patton mini-marathon: Faith No More- A Small Victory Mr. Bungle - Goodbye Sober Day Fantomas- Rosemary's Baby

Soooooo happy you're digging into the Bungle rabbit hole. Mike Patton is not only a genuine musical genius, but he also has the widest vocal range of any human. (At least that's what I read) Some gems - Squeeze me macaroni, Ars Moriandi, Goodbye sober day. No other bands fit this genre lol. But some other Mike Patton bands I think would interest you - Peeping Tom (cross genre) Tomahawk (Rock/metal) Fantomas Melvins Big Band (weird and great) and of course Faith No More Aloha:)

I was so lucky to be introduced to Mr Bungle by my close friends who were learning to play both bass guitar, electric guitar and drums, and like me, already loved Faith No More and pretty much anything that Mike Patton was working on. They toured Australia in 96 and they played at one of the oldest venues in our port and fishing town of Fremantle (just south of Perth) and the entire audience were gobsmacked 😶 by how amazing their sound and theatrical on-stage antics were. Each band member swapping instruments with another band member just to wow the crowd. Mike Patton operating multiple layered keyboards and synthesizers, including an array of different microphones for all his voices. The drummer never stopped drumming for the entire set, even between songs. Incredible energy and still my favourite show in 30 years

You're absolutely right, The beach Boys was a huge influence in the sound of this record according to the band itself (specially their 1966 record 'Pet Sounds'). I guess they took that influence a step further by using production tricks from that era as well. Great video, very entertaining and informative. If you find time, react or at least listen to their song 'Stubb (A Dub)'. Keep on rocking!

Glad you continue your dive on the Bungle rabbit hole haha still a long way to go through. You should try " Violenza Domestica " or " Dead Goon " next. Those would be really cool for you to explore (this song are compositional awesomeness in my opinion). Also I will keep insisting on you listening to the next songs: " Wayfarer " by Kayo Dot " Dirty Boy " or " Hope Day " by Cardiacs (this guys and also Devo are like the fathers of Mr Bungle) " The Curve That to a Angle Turn'd " by maudlin of the Well (First incarnation of Kayo Dot) I know that at this point your suggestions are like through the ceiling haha but anyways I'll be hoping that you can get around this songs some day because I have the certainty that you will love them (or at least find them quiet interesting).

I first got turned onto them with the release of the album "California". And it's an album I come back to every year... as soon as spring comes and we get the nice sun and mild warmth it's a top down cruising album. It's an amazing album all the way through.

Mr. Bungle is so good especially this album. California has so many different musical styles, and Patton one of the few vocalists who could pull an album like this off.

I love the insight on the mono strings playing at the beginning, that's something I never would have picked up on! Soo glad you chose this song! Personally I think this whole album will be up your alley Geebz, it's an eclectic mix as always, but I think it's their most accessible. (if you can use terms like that when talking about Mr.B lol) Plus it would be great to surf to as well! (: As for bands similar to Bungle. I'd love to see you do Idiot Flesh. A song like Chicken Little or Black Sand would be a good place to start. Thanks for the content Geebz you rock!

I was lucky enough to see this masterpiece live! At a place called Fitzgerald's in Houston. I wasn't going to go because I had initially like the first two albums so much that I was a little bit mad at the California album. Quickly turned into my favorite after seeing them perform everything perfect. Only then did I really realize the vibe and the genius! Still get goosebumps thinking about it

For a mind-melting connection, check out a band Mike Patton has worked with a couple times and Mr. Bungle has toured with: MELT-BANANA. And there's only one song you really have to do, though plenty other crazy ones- "Chain-Shot to Have Some Fun"... it's also one of a few over 3 minutes- the alternative is listening to a collection of short tracks, most are less than a minute long.

My best mate once described Mr. Bungle-who I first heard while on LSD…Imagine THAT…as ‘A weird montage of circus music, lounge jazz, surf music, and death metal.’ Yet somehow it WORKS, and what’s more, it’s AWESOME. I was so happy I discovered them when I did, because it was literally 2 months before I was able to catch them live on the tour supporting their 1999 album, *California*. That was the last tour upon which they played their best-known songs. I definitely took two tabs of acid before that show. I danced my ass off. I was hysterical, and I had so much fun. I never grinned so widely for so long in my life. My mates said I thought I’d lost it permanently. They’re amazing.
