Keys Fishing Vacation

On this trip we fish the flats, bridges and canals of the Florida Keys and catch bonefish and many other species that the Keys are famous for all done out of a folding boat. The Keys are notorious for windy conditions and we cover fishing techniques on how to be successful no matter what mother nature deals out. We even have time for many side trips including a run out to Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas.

I just thought it was me that always got hit with the winds, lol. This year was a big year for the sargassum seaweed and I was told it was due to a lot of nutrients coming from down by South America. Thanks for watching!

Great informative video-. I have a 14' skiff and want get spend some time fishing down there.I have spent time around the middle keys, but mostly 30 years ago. What is your favorite month to fish the Keys and why?

My favorite time is late April. The snowbirds and spring breakers are leaving or just about gone, wind is usually not as bad as it is at other times of the year, temps are good and most importantly the tarpon, bonefish, and permit are in good supply. When it comes down to it though it is always a good time to go to the Keys to go fishing. Thanks for watching and your question.

That's a LOOOOOOONG trailer! What's the length and weight of that trailer?

The trailer is a Trailmanor 3326. It is a hard-sided popup that is 26 feet long when I am driving and collapsed and 33 feet long when opened up at the campsite. It is only about 6 feet tall when I am towing it and does not sway in the wind or when a truck passes. Trailmanor stopped building this model but they have others that are just a little bit shorter. How are you still able to fold your boat after you put a mount on there. I like to do the same to my. Do you have any pictures? Would love to mount a trolling motor on it too.

You take the outboard motor off the boat then fold it. Porta-bote sells the trolling motor mount I use.

Hi John, How do you like the Porta Bote? I have been debating getting the 14 ft. I can't find a place to see them or sea trial one. The floor does not look flat and looks like it would be uncomfortable to stand up and fish.

I have been very happy with the Porta Bote. If you have the capability to get a boat that you can keep on a trailer that is a better option because it will save you time on set-up and take-down. I own 5 different watercraft and the Porta Bote is one of them. When I pull my camper I can't bring a boat on a trailer and that is when I use the Porta Bote. I have fished in the PB from the Keys to the Great Lakes and it has done everything I have asked of it. I have it rigged with sonar/gps, downriggers and trolling motor along with the 6HP gas engine. How do you transport that Suzuki outboard? Do you lay it in your Cherokee?

I fold the seats down in the back of my jeep and I lay the head of the outboard on top of a boat seat cushion to keep it elevated above the foot of the motor. This elevation is important to make sure that water from the water pump doesn’t get up to the head because that can cause corrosion inside the engine.
