Grace gives us space. Space to learn, to grow, to become. Christ’s Grace-his invitation to LOVE him by being WILLING to keep his commandments-gives us a firm spiritual, psychological, emotional, and physical foundation upon which we can build our lives. We don’t build our lives and character to earn our way to heaven. We build our lives and character to show appreciation for His matchless gift of Grace-to show our love for him. And living in his grace means we allow him to help us build. Also, I loved the articulation of the difference in the preposition “after” to specify separation, rather than time. An understanding and acceptance of his grace transforms our relationship with God. Thank you for the interview!

One key factor I have truly come to know is that we have covenants to help us continually receive heavenly experiences as we deepen our relationship. We are ALL saved by Grace saved..from a physical and spiritual death. When we stand before our Father in Heaven, despite our imperfections, we will either feel comfortable in his presence or we won’t. The 3 degrees of glory are just that, GLORY! It will be where we feel the most comfortable in His glory.

I like to think about Faith and Works like this: Ask a married person: Does your spouse love you? Hopefully they say yes. haha Then ask: How do you know that they love you? They'll proceed to give you all of these examples like, they kiss me, they hug me, they do the dishes, they keep the house clean, they buy me things, and all the other parts of the 5 Love Languages, right? They just gave a list of things that they DO, right? Well, those are works. Their love for their spouse isn't some separate, nebulous thing apart from what they do. They're the SAME. Their love IS what they do. Their love IS their actions; their works. If you say that you love your spouse, but then completely ignore them in every way, then do you actually love your spouse? Love without works is dead. Now, just replace "Love" with "Faith" and you'll understand.

Agreed. I think God’s greatest gift is children and families because it gives us a perfect example of how He feels towards us. We would give our kids anything. Also we have to be fair with the kids and merciful. If we have 4 kids and some are disobedient and others are obedient we have to treat them differently to show justice and fairness even though we love them. We also give them a way to make it right… time out, or apologize, etc etc. God’s gift of families wasn’t just to experience making a family, but it was a witness to us on earth to help understand how God sees us, and how he balances justice and mercy.

My only issue with this is that there are many who CANNOT DO things to show love for someone. Handicapped/disabled people, the elderly that are too sick to do anything for us much less themselves, our pets, and so on. We CAN feel deep love for someone because of what *they do for us*. Because of *who they are*. We're arrogant to believe we do enough FOR God in order to be enough for Him to love us! He l loves us no matter what we can do or cannot do or will not do! We EARN blessings by our making and keeping Covenants with Him, but we do not need to do this for Him to love us, or what about those who cannot do this? Does He not love children, or the severely disabled or sick or cannot get to a temple because of a myriad of reasons? We are shallow mortal beings who measure the level of the love of others by how much, how frequently, how well they do things for us, and we sadly believe we have to DO things to prove our love to God and others by how much we can DO for them.

I love this. Thank you Brad so much for teaching the doctrine of grace so beautifully. Unfortunately, on occasion, there are a few bishops who treat mistakes as rebellion and treat the congregant harshly. And seem to never apologize. And the effect can send a congregant into further isolation, sin, and despair. Concerning his leaders, the Lord said many are called but few are chosen. I wish it was said that many were called but most are chosen. It is essential that bishops and leaders (as the Lords servants) seek the will of the Lord in their callings so that they do it by the Spirit in a Christ-like way. Not doing so can prove destructive to the faith of the vulnerable who come to confess freely, having been moved upon by the Lord to do so. And then find that their repentance experience was painful and harsh instead of joyful and full of love. If the confession to a leader is a negative experience then those seeking forgiveness are inadvertently taught to hide, not confess, and not work through weakness because if they do then they may feel it will not be a safe environment and possibly lose faith in the repentance process. But im optimistic most who work through repentance are treated well and feel the atonement to be a positive doctrine as they work through the repentance process in their lives. Repentance is suppose to be merciful and joyful when we realize the Lords patience with us. Then we can feel that grace that he so fully proffers us. I love Christs Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

A thought came to my mind while listening our well loved Elder Wilcox talk about ordinances. It was the healing story of Naaman found in 2 Kings 5:10-15. The prophet Elisha gave the instruction to Naaman to bath 7 times in the Jordan river, when Naaman was expecting grand gestures and words from the prophet that would heal him instantly. Because the instructions seemed tao easy and silly to Naaman, he did not want to go bath 7 times. Fortunately, Naaman had good servants that helped him realized that if the prophet had asked him to do something harder, he would have done it. Why wouldn’t he do something so simple and symbolic? Aren’t we similar when we resist the need of obeying the simple yet profound doctrine of ordinances? Ordinances are truly a question of faith, obedience, opportunity to be taught and blessed, as to be grateful for our Savior Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World 🤍
@oooee2 ай бұрын
Naaman is such a great example, and brought to mind Christ's own example. Why was Christ baptized by water? Why did Christ suffer through a baptism of blood and fire? Why did He die and three days later quickened by a baptism of the Spirit arise from the tomb? Christ was obedient and endured these three very physical baptisms that He has asked that we do in similitude as ordinances, so He can at the last or seventh day, as we stand before Him in spirit, offer us all the blessings God promised, of water (resurrection salvation from physical death), blood (salvation from death of sin and hell) and Spirit (salvation from the second death through His sanctifying Spirit for those who would be transformed by Him and thus purified, can without spot enter into the presence of the Father). Born again, both body and Spirit, the dual temporal baptism and spiritual baptism required to receive the blessing of eternal life.

I think a common misconception in the LDS community is that we evangelical Christians believe that because we have been forgiven, that our job is over. We (the overwhelming majority of us anyway) absolutely do not believe that. We believe that God's forgiveness and redemption transforms us into the people he wants us to be, and from that, it's our desire to obey Him and honor Him with our entire lives. It's no longer a struggle to live apart from sin, but rather our hearts are transformed and no longer desire that lifestyle of sin.
@enochgoodfellow89722 ай бұрын
There is a lot of confusion out there in every group. The best thing we can do is love each other and have done with contention. The problem is that there are so many different denominations of Christianity, and they differ on many things. It's hard to know what any particular Christian believes. Also, we get continuously bashed over the head by condemnations of our " works based" religion. It sure seems from that that any works are abominable to Christians. The Lord Jesus Christ Himself said that he or she who loved anyone more than Him was not worthy of Him. What does that mean? Not worthy of Grace? He further says, "IF you love me, keep my commandments. " In my mind, that means that it's the demonstration of love that makes the grace efficacious. Not the other way around.

Beautiful! I think too often we misunderstand what the word ‘saved’ really means or implies. To be saved is to be preserved, or set aside, so as not to be lost. (eg., He ‘saved’ the best for last.) When we put it in that context, it’s easy to see that grace and covenants go hand in hand. We are saved, preserved by Christ because of His grace. That gives this entire conversation a whole new, beautiful meaning.

I have been studying this verse of Scripture for the last few years. It is truly one of the most misunderstood topics in all the church. I remember someone going inactive from this verse in 2 NE 25:23. This verse was not designed to be read by itself. As I have pondered this scripture and studied all the scriptures combined I have a testimony of Elder Wilcox's interpretation. One scripture that expounds upon this beautifully is in the record of the Anti-Nephi Lehites where the king is speaking. This is what he says: Alma 24: 10 And I also thank my God, yea, my great God, that he hath granted unto us that we might repent of these things, and also that he hath forgiven us of those our many sins and murders which we have committed, and taken away the guilt from our hearts, through the merits of his Son. 11 And now behold, my brethren, since it has been all that we could do (as we were the most lost of all mankind) to repent of all our sins and the many murders which we have committed, and to get God to take them away from our hearts, for it was all we could do to repent sufficiently before God that he would take away our stain- 12 Now, my best beloved brethren, since God hath taken away our stains, and our swords have become bright, then let us stain our swords no more with the blood of our brethren.

I love how these two gentlemen keep going back to the sacrament, the blessing of which is the clearest example of grace vs. works. Is it not interesting that blessing the water, we remember the blood of Christ, His eternal sacrifice by which we can be saved. Not merely a way out of sin, but the only way given to Man. There is no other way. Blessing the water there is no mentioning of law or eternity, we are saved from the second death, after this the sacrifice has worked its wonder, we are saved in Him. Blessing the bread we are reminded of His body; not His broken dead body, but His glorious exaltation. Now we hear of both eternity and the law. Grace is given by the sacrifice of Christ, exaltation and glory by us following His law becoming more like Him as we take upon ourselves His doctrine and character 🙏

My only issue with that our evidence of love is what we do for others or for God is that there are many who CANNOT DO things to show love for someone.

10:45 King Lamoni answered this question in Alma 24: 11. "All we can do" is REPENT. We are forgiven on condition of repentance. And repentance means to confess and forsake sin.

I came up with this "after all we can do" perspective before I heard any church leader say it. If someone outside of the church had never been told what that phrase means, and read the line with context, it makes the most sense. All being the good and bad, all. Brad is the only one I've heard talk about it this way.

When Nephi wrote those words, "for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do." (2N25.23) He told us just before that what it is that when can do, "to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God". This is what is constantly and consistently taught in scripture. The higher law of the higher priesthood is the law of faith unto repentance. "All we can do" is exercise faith and offer a broken heart and contrite spirit. This is the promised new covenant (Deut.30; Jer.31; Ezk.11&36; Luke 24:49; 2 Cor. 3; Hebrews 9.1,8-12; etc. - these are about the new covenant and receiving a new heart). This is the Doctrine of Christ (2N30.2; 2N31.17-20; 2N32.3-6; Section 10.67-70; etc). This is “the law and the commandments of [His] Father” (3N12.19).

Love this topic. And I love Bro Wilcox’s take on it. 13:21 On the loyalty question, this is the elephant in the room that I just feel can’t be addressed in faithful spaces today. Loyalty to Christ cannot be swapped with absolute loyalty to the brethren because He was perfect and they are not. That is not an expression of will to rebel, but just to point out that at times personal conscience is at odds with the current teachings of the Church at a point in time, and that history shows a clear evolution in many critical doctrines over time. We casually throw around the recognition that prophets make mistakes, but no one is allowed to speak publicly as to what those might be or discuss ways to engage those matters that are both faithful and genuine. It’s a serious problem.

Love is law, law is love. If we can as believing human beings all wrap our heads around this and believe it. We can put the long held debate to rest and accept his grace, repent and have faith try to keep our covenants and welcome and depend on his mercy and love.

As a Protestant it’s interesting to see that changing the verbiage of doctrine (which shouldn’t have to be done if it’s the word of God) makes such a huge difference in the meaning of grace for LDS people and more closely aligns with Protestant beliefs. It’s certainly moving in the right direction, and that’s what matters.

This discussion is something I needed to hear. I'm trying to be as obedient as possible. As someone who's become active again, I sometimes have over thought the sacrament, and have not taken it because of feelings of unworthiness, and it's uncomfortable sometimes. In my past I've been a bit "needy" and I don't want to be so needy, so I haven't bothered my Bishop too much about it. I hope and pray that I'll be able to let the Spirit teach me, because I don't want to leave the church, or quit going because I'm not sure I understand it completely. It's obviously way better to never leave the straight narrow path, but coming back and repenting is difficult yet glorious. I hope to figure this out. I've come a very long way and I'm working on being perfectly obedient to the word of wisdom, and not spending too much time scrolling which isn't conducive to keeping the Holy Spirit. Sometimes I honestly don't know whether or not to take the sacrament, and it's making me not want to attend church. Any thoughts or insights are welcome.

As President Nelson has taught, "The Lord loves effort." Props to you for putting forth effort. I'm glad to hear you're striving to be active again. Regarding your sacrament question, I think this would be a great question to pray about -- and don't hesitate to talk to your bishop or elders quorum/relief society president about it (not sure if you are male or female). Talking about it with people might be helpful! (It has been for me when I've had questions in the past).

Any inclination not to come and partake of what the Savior proffers you through His atonement and the sacrament isn't coming from the Lord. He loves you and wants you there where He can bless your life. Striving...trying...that is something He delights in. Just keep going.

You may want to check out Faith Matters podcasts where they talk about religious scrupulosity. The phrase “perfect obedience” is not helpful because it is not attainable in this life. The ancients understood the word “perfect” to mean “whole; complete” and not our modern definition of the word.

Being OF the world for 40+ years I can tell you the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the gospel of Saving Grace and Joy… as we do what we can! As a member the blessings during a terrific trial cannot compare to being in a trail without the gospel! I compare those trials to 1st degree, 2 nd degree and 3 rd degree burns!!
