As I already mentioned I used to do the same thing when I lived in the Lower Keys back 45 years ago. The mangrove snapper back then were huge out in the Marquesas Islands. we would usually anchor off the islands a little and spearfish the mangrove roots were it was a little deeper with some current. The only challange was getting them back to the boat without the barracudas stealing them from you. We used to thread out shot lines through their gills and drag them behind us. It was to dangerious to hold them next to your body. Each of us had between 2 and 4 fish so loosing a couple was no big deal. It's good to watch someone else doing the same thing. PS - the big mangrove snapper were "really" tight up in the root system of the Mangroves. They were extremely cagey as well. The smaller ones would swim out in the open and we would ignore them. You literally had to hold your speargun locked and loaded pointing at the roots and then shoot when one swam in front of your gun. If you moved at all they would spook and scatter back up into the roots...

Awesome! These mangrove runs don't ever get old for me. This was the first time I could hear the fin popping when they all flinch at once. I have head phones on and when the mangrove flinch, you can hear their fins popping good on this one.

A horseshoe crab! I camped out on St. Cathrine’s Island in Georgia a few years ago and the horseshoes were copulating on top of each other in the shallow surf. Sometimes 3 on top of each other. They were really going at it. There were thousands of them. In the morning they were gone. There was no trace anything had happened. Enjoyed the video.

Wow! From the start with that aerial shot, spectacular. Truly captivating show and tremendous display of skill and courage. Nice to see several tarpon and possibly a snook too; was that a horseshoe crab at around the 48/49 minute? One of the spots looked like the point where you camped out one night and another where your wife joined ya via that mangrove maze, impressive! Thanks again for the wonderful shows. Looking forward to viewing your next episode.

Here’s a small little tip and that tip is a good helper in case you cannot hold your breath for long if you spearfishing in shallow Waters, then you can bring a snorkeling with you and stay at the top while spearfishing the biggest ones or if there isn’t any big fish you could just go to a different area with big fish

Nice! When I'm spear fishing the Mangroves I found that if any exposed skin touches the roots I have swelling and irritation for weeks. I suspect its the little aptasia anemones that grow on them. I'm curious if this is common with everyone or if I'm more sensitive to them.

Have you ever thought about doing a cookbook? I bet you and Will (clams) could make an awesome Key West Waterman cookbook with underwater pictures and stories and etc. I’d definitely buy one if you did. I bookmark the videos with recipes I’m interested in but an app or cookbook would be cool and a different way to create content.
