over 20 years ago my guy. that album came out in 02. the song is basically an attack on white supremacy, particularly through the form of political censorship of opposing views. back then, the FCC would try to fine radio stations for airing Em's music without censorship, which mattered because radio was the primary method of promo back then. senator Lynne Cheney, 2nd lady of the US at the time, tried to pressure the parent company of his label into censoring him. Tipper Gore, 2nd lady before Cheney, was responsible for putting the parental advisory sticker on records, which was essentially an attempt to ban explicit lyrics, and by extension certain artists, from succeeding in the music industry. she did that because she heard her daughter singing a Prince song.

So... when Em was a topic of conversation for Congress it was all about 1st Amendment.. free speech issues. Which almost all controversial rappers, writers and comedians face at some point. As far back as my 45 yr old ass can remember, We the general public have always pushed censorship. I remember when there was ZERO cursing on our 5 channel tv's and then cable came in. Even cable tv went through it to allow adult content... and then it was "Skinemax" late night. Back to Em though.. before this song came out, he had 3 or 4 high selling albums already and some of the songs were about killing his wife, fictionally.. he placed himself in the shoes of the Columbine shooters.. he used the "f" word (f*g not f**k) egregiously.. he called out parents for not parenting.. drugs were the forefront topic for him and even destroyed his mom over her usage. And through it all.. one thing remained apparent. Even from before Em.. the government cares less about the words and more about the person saying them. And because they can't restrict the speech... they go after the person. THAT is what this track is about!

This song, and by extension the album it's on, came out in the immediate post-9/11 days. It was real easy to bully and censor artists who weren't seen as "patriotic" enough. Eminem, however, was not an artist to last down and take it. He'd already been beefing with Congress for several years over the contents of his lyrics.

Bro... I been listening to Em since Slim Shady LP. Been a fan ever since I first heard My Name Is on the radio. Once that album dropped, I scooped it up and that shit blew my little 12 year old mind. That got him noticed. Then he came right back with The Marshall Mathers LP. He literally became public enemy #1 along with Marilyn Manson, who was already under heavy scrutiny because his music was being blamed for the Columbine shootings. Media was on a full blown witch hunt for both of them. And both of them made the media look like fools. But yeah, censorship was coming down hard on these two, especially Em as he had a line on the song I'm Back that was censored even if you got the explicit album version. Shit was unheard of. And they never uncensored that line on that album, yet as you know, he was able to say that line in Rap God with no censorship.
